I am new to BaRNI – and I’ve been told Aunt Devon is dreaming of a very special place – one that caters to hounds just like me!! A Senior Center – complete with a rec room – huge fluffy pillows and lot of pettting hands……my own bed, special soft senior treats and more loving than one knows what to do with…The dream makes me want to dance! My name is Sukey – I was found wandering the streets with an eye that really hurt!! The vet people had to remove it, so now I’m wearing a satellite dish on my head – but I’ll be able to tune Aunt Devon in much better on 3-27 and 3-28 than the other 95 plus hounds awaiting the big show!!! Aunti Devon, can I have your pawtograph on my belly? VOTE FOR DEVON AND KISS SUKEY!!! Woof

I would like to apply for Senior Center Nutrionist! I am Amazing Grace!

As we all know, it is important to give back! As an BarNi Alumni of Daphneyland, I would like to apply for Senior Center Nutrionist! I am Amazing Grace!

It was a sad set of circumstances that brought me into rescue, and an amazing network of Aunts and Uncles that reunited me with my original Dad – but I was for awhile; a BaRNI Hound at Daphneyland – and a sick one at that.

Aunts and Uncles from all over bonded together and helped me get well… Aunt Pam, Aunt Helene, Grandma Norma, My Dad Gary…….. me and my sister were at Daphneyland for an extended time.

And because I once was a rescue hound, who would be better to plan the senior center hounds diet and nutritional needs? Stretch of course has his own menu – some of us more discerning hounds have other ideas…. (besides, his love of Jelly beans has destroyed his pearly whites!)

If the Dream becomes reality – then the seniors shall dine on home prepared foods – the sudden recall of pet foods nationwide should scare the heck out of many animal slaves, and therefore I would be strict in a homecooked diet for everyone. One of my very well known idols; Queen FeyFey has written about white boxes – and I think all senior hounds should have white boxes…. filet, steak, chicken, chocolate cake?? Well – okay a girl has to TRY doesn’t she??
I would like to approve all menus for the senior hounds should the center be opened…. a healthy diet and yummy snacks for our old teeth and gums – soft chews and human slaves to hand feed some of us more finicky hounds would be required.

Because I adore our leader Hamilton, I won’t talk about WHY Broccolli might not be a good food source for the seniors…. but if some of them insist I am sure we can get some room deodorizors to handle the….errrr…. unpleasant odor that broccolli might create, if you get my meaning.

Now – one thing which I would not put on the menu…… Peanut Butter.
Our Aunt Dawn likes to coat meds in Peanut Butter – us old hounds have a hard time getting the peanut butter off the top of our mouths, and it IS NOT POLITE TO LAUGH AT AN OLD HOUND WITH PEANUT BUTTER MOUTH! Braunsweiger for pills is my preference, thank you very much.

As a side note, I have a petition signed by the seniors asking why it is that if Girl Scout Troops come to the ranch for educational days – why don’t they bring their boxes of girl scout cookies? How is that considered fair?

Attention, I am not a Sr., but I have an announcement to make!

They tell me my name is Pheonix – I suppose thats okay.
My age is currently unknown (3??) as I have just arrived through BaRNI to Daphneyland and I am one sick hound. Although I am not a senior, I will be one day – hopefully many years from now after a forever home is found for me.
The photo above is my shelter photo – but it doesn’t show all my ribs sticking out, or the fact that I got really sick in the shelter. Right now I don’t feel so wonderful, but the folks here were cheering yesterday when I started eating on my own. Who would ever think folks would be SO happy to see a hound eat?

Because I am currently a sick hound, I may just be the perfect spokes hound for the Isolation/Medical ward which will be needed at the senior center….
Speaking from personal experience, its soooo wonderful to arrive at a place where there is very limited stress. To be given a comfy bed, lots of warm blankies and good food, medications, love and concern as well as HEAT!!! When you’ve got a bad cold, heat is a really good thing.

I have toys to play with if I want, and I kinda thought that was a nice touch – yea, I didn’t really want to play with them until today, but that squeaky frog just may need to ribbit all night long, hee, hee.
My Aunt Lisa made sure I got here safe and sound and my Uncle Ralph and Aunt Connie drove me on in.
Where in the world has this place been all my life?

When I feel better I would like to design -2- isolation areas for sick hounds – places where they can recover and feel better after the stress of loosing a home, ending up in a shelter and then not sleeping for a while.

Its tough on a hound, and I think I can make sure that future shelter hounds have peace and tranquility while they head back on the road to recovery. Soft colors and some good artwork on the walls – many fluffy blankies as they wash easier than doggie beds for sterilization….. Wow, this is the life I tell ya – sleeping all day nice and warm with a full belly…….
Please rund and tell shelter hounds that there is a good place waiting for them if they are lucky enough to find a rescue group…..

May I introduce…(hear trumpets sounding) BJ Longears – The Princess of the Senior Center and in charge of Decorating.

I am a BaRNI hound who originated in a San Diego shelter, being listed as 10 years old and having a mammary tumor that everyone thought would take my life, the local rescue group could not help me. Thankfully the great basset slaves at Barni were called and I arrived at Daphneyland thru a transport of many animal lovers.

With many thanks to my special sponsors: Aunt Kim & Uncle Keith and Aunt Kay H, I went to see the vet man and had surgery. The great news is that they were able to remove my tumor and it was benign!!
I have long awaited the ability to decorate the senior rooms and I am soooo happy to be heading up this committee.

Plush foofy beds – maybe like those the Sheraton Universal has for its special canines… some leather couches for the seniors… a Day Spa – complete with designer shampoos and conditioners for my luxurious long ears and silky coat. Doggie breath mints on every pillow at bedtime…..
FLOWERS. A girl needs flowers to sniff and Lavender is my flower of choice…..

A copy of Lily in each bed chamber for bedtime stories to the seniors…….. a really nice sound system that will play our Aunt Gigi’s songs throughout the Senior Center.. I love falling asleep to Gigi’s songs….

My name is Hamilton and I have Devon wrapped around my paw!

Hamilton howing in from Daphneyland wants a word!

1565

Older than dirt plus a day – that’s me, Hamilton. I am proud to say I own my Aunti Devon, lock stock and barrel. Just look at what she’s doing for me!! (It is all about me).

Once upon a time I had another life, its been so long ago that my alzheimers has kicked in and I forgot where home was – I found myself in an Animal Shelter – and thats when I met my Aunt Devon. She rescued me you see… and she just loves me. The feeling is mutual.

We share a dream.
Aunt Devon and I have woofed, and we think a big beautiful building up the hill from Daphneyland would be a great place for all the hounds just like me that find themselves without a home. Warm and comfy and full of us senior basset citizens that the world forgets about. Not my Aunt Devon – she loves us old guys and knows that we have so much love to give and spark left in our bark. It just takes time. Us seniors find homes but it takes about 9-12 months to find a home for us, someone special enough to be willing to consider just a few years of total adoration, thats where the Senior Basset Center comes into focus.

Close your eyes…. oh wait, you need to read….. okay, imagine if you will….
5 acres on a hill and a big senior basset house – some people might call it a kennel but its a house to us.

Big bedrooms for us older guys who get aches and pains during the fall and winter, heated and air conditioned of course. The gentle sound of music playing in the background to ease our days. A large room big enough for volunteers to come and give us seniors massages, spa days and just to hang out in on yucky weather days. A bathroom would be mandatory as the human basset slaves don’t like tree’s as much as I do. A kitchen of course, every basset needs a kitchen!! How can bassets beg treats if there is not a kitchen around?
Big windows so we can watch the wonderful sunsets here in the golden years of our life from our vantage point on comfy couches that are worn just right to give our bones the wonderful rest we have earned.

Play yards for Senior Basset Shuffle and walks, greeting areas for potential adoptive families that are trying to earn our love – we may be old but we are basset royalty, you must cater to our whims in order to earn our adoration. Catering tips have been given by our associate Stretch…

Each of us seniors have our own style, dreams and ambitions.
In my golden age I like to water. I water trees, fence posts, benches. It is my mission in life and one I fulfill daily. I need more trees. more fence posts and lots more benches. I you water a bench on one side, you can always sleep under the other, benches are a WONDERFUL thing!

The Dream. A place where senior hounds can live in comfort and peace until the day comes when we go to our homes…. whether that home be here on earth or whether that home is the great dog park in the sky that we like to call The Rainbow Bridge; every hound should have a home. Young or old.
That is our dream, Aunt Devon and I.
Please help.

Hi, I’m Stretch!

March 19th, 2007 - 5:05 pm KY Time

Stretch from Daphneyland has an important announcement!!! Perk up those long ears and listen up!

1563

Hi – I’m Stretch and I am 17 years old. 17 you say?? Speak up I CAN’T HEAR YOU ya young whippersnapper!!

I live at Daphneyland as a Sanctuary hound. I’m one of those special cases –
I was adopted from Fresno Humane in my younger days by a great guy who loved me bunches. Unfortunately our landlord wanted to rennovate our home and my dad and I became homeless. I was 15.

Not wanting me to have to live in a car or bounce around everywhere, and with many tears and sadness my Dad asked Daphneyland if I could stay there for a few months until he could find us a new place to live… that was 2 years ago. I am a resident of Daphneyland and I love it!!

In the last 2 years, I have explored every nook and cranny imagineable, and I am dreaming of more places to explore. I would like to submit my resume to be the manager of the basset rescue senior center. I would approve all visitors and allow them access once they have passed my stringent tests…..

Entry to the senior center would require:
Proper bellyrubbing – I will gladly allow test bellyrubbing.
Search for illegal treats – any and all jelly beans in pockets shall become my personal property upon discovery. I shall also confisticate any jerky treats, cookies or hamburgers. I am happy to oversee illegal cargo embargo – I have a special spot for these items. (Yum).
The ability to actually STEP OVER ME.

Resume requests should be sent to:
basset911@aol.com

Soulfully yours…..
Stretch, 17 years
