Ralph goes in for his general checkup! A note from Dawn of the West

June 6th, 2007 - 5:05 pm KY Time

Ralphie60507_20006.jpg

So Ralph went for his blood work & fecals and general checkup…. after 5 days post shelter his weight is: 30.5 (should be 45-50).He is eating like a horse and playing like a scamp.

To meet Ralph is to fall head over heels in love.

Our incredible vet Dr. Young Kim at Roswinn Pet Hospital had this to proclaim after exam:
“He’s Adorable” – therefore its official, Ralph is an “adorable” hound.
Heart and lungs are good, teeth are great, 4- 4.5 months is definate, ears have slight yeast infection (not mites as was previously thought) Dr. Kim seems to feel he’s a basset/bloodhound mix – We’re still thinking the legs are walker hound but are not familiar enough with that breed to know for sure.
We’ll have most results in tomorrow – and we’ll proceed from there, for right now he’s on a nutritional plan –
and ear meds.

Ralphie60507_20007.jpgAnd just to share a tidbit about Dr. Kim –
We all love our vets as we should, Dr. Kim is our primary vet, and we have been working together for well over 20 years. Originally hailing from Korea, Dr. Kim who won the Vet of the Year Award many years ago, brought excellent medical care to the lower income areas. I lucked upon him all those years ago by mistake. Dr. Kim and my working relationship began before I was a formal rescuer, in those days I was saving strays of of streets and rehoming etc. Dr. Kim was very adamant about spay and neuter all those years ago, and I attribute my ability to help these poor angels directly to him. In all these years Dr. Kim has been a mentor, able to disucss the smallest and most mundane issues – and has been so instrumental and encouraging in supporting our rescue for so many years. We literally could not save the canines we do without his knowledge, guidance and assistance. Dr. Kim is a master diagnostician and as the years pass one cannot imagine the number of times he has walked in our shoes… for the benefit of the canines in our care.

I am a rescuer today because of my family, friends and Dr. Young Kim, DVM.

Please come by the Devon’s Dream Corner as I will be there hoping to raise more funds towards our senior hounds….

We have Devon’s Dream DVD’s available for a donation, and for a price Hamilton and I may even be talked into autographing it!! LOL

Devon’s Dream Necklace orders will be taken and a special Father’s Day gift card will be available……

We aren’t gonna stop until this dream comes true for homeless senior hounds one and all! There are so many Hamilton’s, Chance’s, Bogart’s, and Stretch’s out there counting on us! When I looked into Chance’s white face last week snoring on my couch after his owners dumped him because he was just too old…I whispered to him a promise that we will never give up! Then I balled my head off! lol

See you all at the Hoedown!!!

BaRNI Hoedown this Saturday! Can you attend?

June 5th, 2007 - 4:04 pm KY Time

2339
Howllo Fellow Hound Lovers: Look who RSVP yes for the hoedown! His name is Chance and he is 10 plus years old. Devon just recently pulled him out of a pound in South Central LA. His family dumped him. They told the shelter worker, “he is just too old.”

Devon found out about the situation and went and got him. Can you imagine how confused he must have been. I bet he was glad to get away from those dumb people who dumped him.

Well folks. This is a perfect example of why we need the Sr. Retirement Home for BaRNI at Daphneyland. When Devon picked up Chance, BaRNI was full. They were over capacity at 100 hounds. Chance had to wait in line to get in.

Devon washed him up and placed him right on her couch until he was placed at BaRNI.

Chance, has some health problems as most elders do. Devon has set up a first giving page for the old boy. It is:

Chance will be at the hoedown on Saturday if you are in need of a kiss! Devon reports that he is really good at it.

Good Luck Chance. You are in good hands now. More Later…Cat, Chaps and Emma

Ralph, sinks to the depths of despair, then flies high! YES!

June 4th, 2007 - 11:11 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound Lovers: Meet Ralph. A down on his luck hound puppy that was dumped, emaciated and sick in a Sacramento Shelter. Well, Ralph’s luck changed on Friday, when an angel from Pomeranian rescue swooped down and yanked him from his dire situation! Ralphie was whisked to the Mather Airfield for his 2 and 1/2 hour flight to Acton. He slept the entire way. Here is the story of Ralph’s weekend journey. Quote, from Dawn at BaRNI, “There are angels in this world who fly high – and the Alsups sure do head that list…”

2328
hey, have my prayers been answered?

This a portion of the e-mail from Dawn of BaRNI at Daphneyland
As most of you know, we had a crisis situation for an emaciated puppy named Ralph in a Sacramento Shelter. Many thanks go out to Theresa & Patrick Alsup who flew their plane to Sacramento, and picked Ralph up from the wonderful rescuer who had pulled him out of the shelter on Friday afternoon. Ralph flew into Agua Dulce Airpark on Sunday early evening – private plane and all…
In the meantime, Devon Smith had so graciously made a donation page for Ralph so that his vet care fund would be ready for his unknown medical care. (see link below) I can report that Ralph rides well in a private plane – kisses like a champ and although reported to be 4 months old, may not be that old. For those that have donated, called, offered assistance – Thank you! Here is Ralph’s first photos of the rest of his life – the good part….

Click on the pictures to see the full size image!

Ralph meets his private pilot, Patrick. Hey things are looking up! That is up, up, and away!

2324
Could I have a warm towlette and some mixed nuts please? Ralph has his own private flight attendent her name is Lisa!

2326
Ok people, I am ready to begin my new life! This is much more like it! BaRNI here I come! I heard Daphneyland was really kewl!

WELCOME TO THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF BASSET HOUND PEOPLE RALPH. YOU HAVE A HUGE FAN BASE ALREADY. DAWNI, KEEP US POSTED.

Want to donate to Ralph’s medical expenses? You can!

My friend in Brazil – Hello sweet Fernanda!

June 2nd, 2007 - 7:07 pm KY Time

The following is a note from my YouTube Friend.

hello cathy
I´ve already seen your videos and website. My two bassethounds also have videos on youtube and we´ve always gone to check news about your pets. Bassethounds are my passion too. I have a male named Al Capone (known by “Poninho”) and a female named Mary Mae.
Mary Mae is a gift! I knew Karen (another YouTube person) and her friends over here, at orkut (like myspace). After that we´ve started a wonderful friendship, talking over here and MSN. One of this friends, named Maria Fernanda has a male named Bacco and his was ready to be a father. So she gave me his puppy Mary Mae. Me and my husband travelled over 16 hours just to know these wonderful people of the State Rio Grande do Sul and get my new daughter Mary Mae. Can you imagine that? Without knowing anybody, talking just by phone, we travelled and arrived there! But when we´re arrived they were so fantastic!

A Walk Through the Park, by Danielle Woodson – BHT resident artist

June 2nd, 2007 - 5:05 pm KY Time

As I walk through the park followed by my best friend, I see beautiful maple trees surrounding a large pond.

2317

My friend looks into the pond her long brown ears drooping into the water. She sees minnows swimming about trying to escape the clutch of a turtle. She leaps into the water her white speckled legs too short to swim far. Disliking the water, but cooled off she tromps out of the pond. We head for home dreaming of coming back again.

Thank you my good friend, Danielle. What a beautiful fun piece. A writer and an artist? Very impressive. Your friends, Cat, Chaps and Emma
