Breaking News from Dawn of BaRNI – 6:12 a.m. 7-4-07
Roxie’s Little Firecrackers Ignite at BaRNI with a Bang!
Howllo fellow hound lovers. I received the following email from Dawn this morning at 6:12 am, Acton, CA time. Rescues deal with many harsh realities and this is Roxie’s Story.
HERE IS DAWN’S EMAIL WITH PICTURES, SOME OF WHICH ARE DURING BIRTH.
If you are thinking of breeding and whelping puppies – please believe me – this is not for the faint of heart. 3 of the puppies had to have assistance in delivery, and one, Roxie was too weak to deliver on her own. Bloody, messy and primal – Roxie allowed me to assist her and I am very grateful to her for sharing her most intimate of times.
Roxie is the mother’s name and her story is not unique.
Purchased from a back yard breeder and then bred by her owners, this litter makes #3 in her lifetime of 2 years. Please understand – no basset should be bred BEFORE two years – they are still puppies themselves. Roxie was given up – in rescue we call this an OTI (Owner Turn In) to a wonderful ALL BREED rescue group in Modesto CA. She was supposedly 6 weeks pregnant. We were contacted and asked if we would consider taking her, as the rescuer wanted only the best possible homes for Roxie as well as the pups….. we said yes. Our fabulous volunteers, the Alsups, offered to fly up in their private plane and transport her back here to Acton, bellyrubbing her all the way. This would be less stress and a shorter ride. Our vets all said they thought it would be okay, so we went ahead and did this. Roxie arrived late Friday afternoon.
Several very wonderful people stepped forward out of our call for whelping assistance – and we’d like to thank the following special friends of Roxie – The Alsups, Marie Radebaugh, Sukey Shor, The Keyse Family, Jeannie Queenen, Marian Zackarias, Dr. Evelyn Vega, and Cat Rudert.
Roxie’s milk came in on Sunday, she dropped on Monday and was ran to the vet asap. We were told to expect the pups at any time.
Thankfully, Liz St. Clair had given Carol and I a Walmart gift card last Christmas as a gift, and we were able to use it to quickly run out and buy the emergency whelping supplies we needed. The Queenen’s graciously gave us a plastic swimming pool as a whelping box.
Carol bleached down her office for a whelping/weaning area.
All day on Tuesday was nail biting time. Roxie’s temp dropped to 99.0 and rose to 99.5. Roxie and BaRNI are pleased to announce the successful whelping and birth announcement of thus far 7 bouncing puppies. 4 females and 3 males. Whelping began at 2:55 a.m. and was completed at 4:20 a.m.
May I present the BaRNI at Daphneyland firecrackers – whom arrived as follows:
R & W female 2:55 a.m. (needed assistance)
Tri F 3:00 a.m. (needed assistance, white dot on head)
Tri M 3:18 a.m. (Has C on back)
R & W M 3:30 a.m.
Brown & White M 3:46 a.m. – needed resuscitation
Tri F 4:02 a.m. white dot on right hip
R & W F – stuck in birthing canal, is doing fine after manual delivery
There is nothing as cute as a Basset puppy. Congrats to Roxie , Dawn YOU ROCK. Ken
Yeah for a succcessful birth! And I’m sure Roxie will be so happy to know this will be her last litter.
Bless you all for rescuing her and helping her deliver a litter of beautiful pups!
Chris
Dawn, another sleepless night for you but what a reward – eight beautiful pups. Congratulations!
Marie
Its been a cuple of years since I last whelped a litter – I was 15 the last time around and I’m a few years older now . Boy was this an eye opener!!
I had to cram for puppy whelping 101 in -2- days, and there’s so many things I had forgotten or never knew. Roxie was stellar and after I sent Cat the original post…. Roxie delivered another pup – so that makes -8-. 4 red & whites, 3 Tris and one Brown & White. 4 boys and 4 girls. There is a twist to the story – a 15 day old basset puppy who was rejected by his mother will be joingin Roxies litter on Sunday…. stay tuned!!
Congratulations, Dawn, on a successful whelping! Keep those babies warm and fed – that’s the big job now! And lots of snooter kisses to Roxie from the girls at HeavenScent – they say “wow, girl, you’re way too young for that, but enjoy your puppies now that they are here!!”.

What a memorable 4th of July!! Roxie has so many blessings in her life. Eight beautiful babies with Dawn, et al, to ensure all went well, and a much brighter future than being a “breed babe.” Congrats all around and enjoy all those pups! Dawn, try and get some sleep!
Can’t wait to see them. Congratulations Roxie and Dawn, you did a great job together. Dawn, Roxie is very lucky to have had you there with her, you are a great auntie (or grandma, whichever you prefer).
Congrats on the new little “firecrackers”. Now the real work begins keeping everything clean. 🙂 Take care, snooters from my hounds to yours. Will be planning a trip soon to smell some puppy breath.
