Mawingo Meets her Children!

December 13th, 2007 - 10:10 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and Black Rino Lovers!

I just think that Rinos are soooooo Cute! Look at those rumps! I am a big fan of Lewa, a wild life conservancy in Africa.

I just got this update from them on Mawingo: That is her smelling in the direction of her two babies. Mommy is blind!

mawingo_tula_elvis.jpg

Last Friday afternoon Mawingo, the blind female black rhino on Lewa, was spotted well away from her normal area around Anna’s house. She had moved some distance and travelled close to the Lewa swamp. This was surprising due to the fact that Mawingo has never moved this far from her home range before. We watch Mawingo very carefully as she has a tendency to lose her calves shortly after birth (as she has done without fail, on many previous occasions). To date we have had to step in and recover four calves and handrear them. At the moment we are looking after Tula, Elvis and Lola. Previous to this she had two calves killed by lion and leopard respectively. Mawingo is Lewa’s best breeding black rhino.

When Mawingo was seen near Ian’s Bridge she came across two of her children – Tula (three and a half years old) and Elvis (18 months) whom she had not seen since they were recovered after she had lost them. The rhinos approached each other and it did appear that Mawingo recognised the calves! The family was together for a couple of minutes before the children got bored and moved off. Mawingo spent some time smelling the footprints and area before returning home herself. It will be interesting to see if Mawingo turns up so far out of her range again to see her children.

UPDATE – UPDATE! Northern KY basset hound in Boone County Shelter

December 12th, 2007 - 5:05 am KY Time

UPDATE – UPDATE! DAWG finds a forever home! Yes, folks this boy was too cute for words and it paid off big time. Yesterday, at closing time a nice lady came to the shelter to get tags for her Great Perinease. She left with tags and DAWG the basset hound! What a happy beginning for DAWG! I can only imagine the shedding that will take place this Spring in that house! LOL!

What a great happy holiday story!

Howllo Fellow Hound and Dawg Lovers: I got a phone call yesterday from Boone County Animal Care and Control.

KY66.9844865_1_x.jpg

They are trying to get DAWG, a five year old neutered male, into a basset hound rescue. Bluegrass is busting at the seams. Foster homes are few and far between in this neck of the woods. They really need foster homes in the Louisville area.

Can you e-mail this blog posting to anyone you think can help DAWG? The shelter and I are exchanging phone calls right now, but I will update everyone about DAWG soon. Please put your thinking caps on for this fine fellow.

Howllo Fellow Hound and Secret Santa Lovers: We have just discovered who our Secret Santa is!

IMG_2561.jpg

Her name is Dona and she is the famous maker of hats, snoods, and embroidered items for basset hounds. Her website is full of fun items for all. We were so thrilled with our gifts that we made a video! Please, get a cup of egg nog, put the tree trimming on hold and enjoy!

I really want to feature some exclusive items in the bassethoundtown boutique from Dona. We are working on this as I type.

Who would not want to cuddle up with the Mayor? Slurp! Drool included and appreciated!

Rudolph and Hermey’s sleigh ride to the House of Puddles

December 9th, 2007 - 9:09 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and sleigh ride lovers:

We had so much fun yesterday on the sleigh ride. Both boys were so excited. Sporting new collars and freshly bathed we made our way to Columbus.

We are so happy for them. Marilyn checked in last night and said, ” They’re here. They’ve been exploring the far corners of the yard and house. I just fed them dinner, had a little quiet time with them in my bedroom, and now they are off exploring again. Rudolph, Gus & Ricky have been doing the little getting to know you dance in the kitchen, ears pricked up, tails wagging. Hermey has come back to stay by my side. I think Hermey could easily win the longest ears contest. They’ve both been trying to mark all over the house. Guess they’re not used to being inside. They’re both also sneezing, must have a little kennel cough. It’s been a big day for them. I bet they sleep good.”

Thank you all for your help!
Marilyn

NO! THANK YOU MARILYN!
