Wow, how time flies…

March 18th, 2008 - 11:11 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and ATB hound lovers: It was 4 years ago today that my Lily Pad went to the bridge. It was at 9:00pm she died of liver disease. I had my Pad for nine glorious years. 100_0613.jpg

She was a stray wandering in the projects of Newport KY. I had called OHBR that morning to see about adopting an elder. I left a message. The call after mine was a woman who had watched Lily wandering around for weeks and finally got her. She left a message right after mine. Well, the rest is history. I went over and got her that night.

I drove her to the vet office right from the pick up. It was so funny, the vet thought she was about nine years old, but really she was not that old. She just looked old from the streets. I think she was about five. cat_and_lily.jpg

I miss her every day. She changed my life and gave me passion and compassion for everything basset. I miss you little girl. Thank you for leading the way! Love Mommy.

Emma checking in 3-17-08

March 17th, 2008 - 7:07 pm KY Time

Hi friends of Emma.

The update is not that good. Even though everyone is up and trying to help her, Emma is depressed. Every hound may be different, but I know my Emma. Keep in mind, it has only been about 6 weeks.

Emma thinks being blind sucks. I can just tell it.

This is the only way I can relate it. She is sleeping a lot. I try to keep her engaged, but it is not working.

Chaps is trying to engage her as well, and she is having nothing to do with him. Prior to going blind, she would have torn him up!

It is not all bad. Last night she jumped on me and went tail wagging at about 3:00am

It was a true joy for me.

I just want you all to know that blind hounds take time. I know Emma is depressed. She hates being blind. I can tell it. She walks towards me and she is mad.

There is nothing we can do after a hound goes blind.

If you have any questions e-mail me. I have a lot of advise

What is in your Pot-O-Gold?

March 17th, 2008 - 10:10 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and Pot-O-Gold Lovers:
potogold_1.jpg

As many of you will recognize, this is a page from the Lily book! Lily to left and Chloe to the right. You really must click on the image to get the full detail. For those of you who are familiar with photoshop, this image has over 100 layers. To wind up with this end product, which is page 24, took over 20 hours of design and technical work. That does not count the hours and hours for the conception and research. Yes, there was some research! LOL
I designed the Lily book with thousands of symbols and this page has many. The St. Patrick’s day theme was perfect for my message, that my hounds are what is in my pot-o-gold.

I searched for an image of a tub that was in my head for months. After I found it, through the magic of photoshop, I had it turned gold.

The claw feet on the tub are very special to me. My Great-grand Father cast these claws out of bronze. I believe they were used as feet to a grand dining room table. My Dad wound up with one of them and now I have it in my home as a door stop.

The view through the window is my backyard, but the sunset is from a trip to Nappa Valley. While dining on the back deck of Auberge du Soleil for my brother-in-law’s 40th birthday, I snapped it. Auberge du Soleil boast the grandest sunsets in the world. On that night, I would have to agree with them.

These are just a few fun facts you may not have known about the Lily Book.

So, on this St. Patrick’s day I ask. What is in your pot-o-gold?

Happy St. Patrick’s day and may the luck of the Irish be with you.

This picture is Nin at the MI waddle in 2004 I think. We had a blast!

Happy birthday Nin. I wish Atlanta was not so far away so we could be with you.

This picture is Nin with her two kids, Henry (in the foreground) and Ronald. Of course they are sitting with my two kids, Chaps and Emma.

I would say, I certainly have the luck of the Irish to have you as a sister.

May all of your wishes come true. Happy birthday to you!

How ’bout a little KY bluegrass to kick off your night?

March 15th, 2008 - 4:04 pm KY Time

Howllo fellow Hound and KY bluegrass lovers.

My sister and her husband actually have a horse farm in the same little boro that the The International Bluegrass Music museum is in, Owensboro, Kentucky.

It is so cool to go down and visit. It is about an hour from my home. The grass and hills really are blue. Just beautiful!

She is still a bit depressed and sleeps more than she normally does. Goodness sake, she need time, just like her family. I hope you enjoy her video. See how she makes her way! She is so incredible. Look how she takes her first walk. How pawsome is she?

Kentuckiana Cluster All-Breed Dog Show this weekend!

March 14th, 2008 - 12:12 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and Dog Show Lovers: This weekend is the
Kentuckiana Cluster All-Breed Dog Show.

The show is held at the Kentucky Exposition Center.

Chairs are REALLY hard to find, so if you need a chair you may want to carry a light weight one with you. You can park it at a ring you like and leave a sweater or jacket on it. Then you can come back any time you want and rest. Don’t forget to get the best ice cream cone you will find in KY! The scoops are huge! You will see quite a few photo ops of hounds eating the cold stuff as well.

This event is massively huge and you will see thousands of dogs over the course of the show. The number of dogs can be as high as 4,000 and this show is twice the size of Westminster. I have heard it said, that Westminster ends the show season and the Kentuckiana Cluster starts the show season.

My Mom and I absolutely love going. This year we are not going. It is too long to be away from Emma just yet. Maybe next year we will be vendors, selling the Lily book and we will take Chaps and Emma with us.

Bring money because the shopping is great.

Event Dates:

08:00 AM – 6:00 PM, Friday, March 14, 2008: The Cluster event is over for today, but there will be a Basset Hound Club Specialty and Sweepstakes tonight. If I were going, I would report to ring 28 about 5:00pm. Usually, the specialty events start about 6:00 if my memory serves me correctly. This is a great way to view the hounds and the breeders. If you want to talk to a breeder about their hounds, ask for their cards. Dog shows are generally not the best time to discuss buying a puppy. These shows can be very hectic and most of the breeders use this time to get re-acquainted with each other. Take notes, take cards and do your home work. Feel free to e-mail me with any of your questions. If I don’t know the answer, I will find it out. cat@bassethoundtown.com

The largest cluster dog shows in the country is comprised of three different all-breed kennel clubs hosting individual conformation and obedience shows. Also, the Kentuckiana Agility Trials will thrill spectators with fast-paced competition.

This is a great way to spend time with the family. Have fun and enjoy the show.

We are off – like a herd of turtles!

March 13th, 2008 - 3:03 pm KY Time

Hi everyone! We took off for Emma’s maiden voyage like a herd of turtles! She went down the steps like a charm. The harness is a huge help. I held on to the T section and made her feel more secure, like she was not going to trip. Each step, I would say, “Step”. I talk constantly to her. After the last step, I say the word, “Done”. She is very smart and picks up almost instantly.

It did not take long and she was trotting up the hill following Chaps’ scent. She did a great job and I am so proud of her. I know she remembered our route and probably could smell their scent from walks we took months ago. We have a new neighbor, a Labradoodle, who barks like a mad woman. It did not even phase our girl.

4006

My Mom had Chaps and they were in front of us. She would call Emma’s name and our girl would pick up the pace towards her voice. It was very emotional to see her determination and fortitude as she made her way.

They both received compliments on their beauty and are some what famous in our town.

4003

The Mayor lead the way with full gusto and the walk was a rip roaring success. I did get some video footage which I will share with everyone tomorrow. I captured some really cute moments including the Labradoodle.

Well, the kids are sacked out and dreaming of their next march of the bassets.

More from Emma’s blind world later….Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma

P.S. Check back for the video later, tomorrow evening.

Guess who is going to take her first walk today?

March 13th, 2008 - 9:09 am KY Time

Hi Everyone! Guess who is going to take her first walk today? It’s our Emma. She is gearing up for her first walk being blind. We would have gone sooner, but our weather has not permitted us. There was too much snow and ice for a blind girl to navigate. We will practice steps and curbs as well. I know that Chaps will be a huge help. She will be able to smell her way home after Chaps marks the entire route.

I will take a few pictures and post them later. Wish us luck on our maiden voyage!

More from Emma later…Slurp
