I am here to do that for her!

Last night she crawled into our bed (which is on the floor) and made her way right up to my pillow between Chaps and I. I am so proud of her. Keep reading. We have so much to share! This is really exciting! Our girl is finding her way!

DC press release

March 11th, 2008 - 7:07 pm KY Time

“Press Release”
From Lucien & Lilly
3/10/2008

# # # EMBARGOED FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE # # #

Attention all hounds! We are very hard-working hounds! We are democratic hounds practicing grassroots advocacy!

We live on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC so it is very important for us to be politically active good citizens and to help others!

We are paw-titioning our city government for a legal, fenced dogpark in our neighborhood!! We have joined a political organization named Hill Hounds (it is not named after us, although it should be!) and we are learning to pawtition, canvass, and lobby on behalf of all hounds!

We know that lots of doggies who live in towns and cities get to go play with their friends at safe, legal, fenced dogparks. But we do not have any legal dogparks in DC. In fact, a lot of parks in DC have big signs posted that say NO DOGS ALLOWED ON ATHLETIC FIELDS. That is not fair and we are working to correct it!

Graffiti.jpg

Today, we went to a local indoor/outdoor market, called Eastern Market, and we got all sorts of people to sign our pawtition! We saw German shepherds, poodles, beagles, mastiffs every kind of dog. Even a really really cute bulldog!!

Sniffing.jpg

If the city government accepts our pawtition, we will soon have a legal dogpark at a place called Kingsman Field. It is about a block from our house. We went over there a few weeks ago and sniffed around. We saw graffiti, trash, rust, weeds, mud, and a falling-down fence. But if our pawtition works, soon it will be full of wonderful grass to sniff, plants, a doggie pool, a water fountain for humans and houndies, and best of all, a safe fence so our Mom can let us off our leashes! Mom says bassets think with their noses, so we never get to go anywhere without our leashes on, because Mom thinks we will wander off. But we would be safe at a fenced dogpark.

We are getting famous! You can read all about us in our neighborhood news magazine! We are in this month’s issue:

HillRag

Wish us luck!!

Grandma’s advise for Emma!

March 11th, 2008 - 6:06 pm KY Time

Emma pawing in with her grandma!

3991

Sometimes it is hard to wake up.

We have noticed that Emma sleeps a lot more than she did prior to going blind. We are a good gauge at this because I work out of my home and live with my Mom. So, our suggestion is to get your hound up and start moving more. This is important. We know most people have to leave the home to work so this is even more important.

3988

Make time after you get home and get the family fed to get your blind hound engaged. What I did was to take some of her pull toys and move them in front of her. Try to get your hound to play and be excited as they grab hold. Remember to tell small kids not to be really loud. Teach your kids to start a new game with your blind hound. Maybe everyone can sit in a circle and softly call the hound. Your other hounds will love this as well. Your hound has a new life and it will be fun to start new games.

Depression can set in for canines as well as humans. Don’t let anyone tell you different.

Engage, Excite, Live! We can all learn from our blind family member!

Emma has been blind for one month today, It’s OK to cry

March 9th, 2008 - 11:11 am KY Time

Hi everyone:

I am reporting on our Emma. She went totally blind, one month ago today, 3-9-08. Emma is healing from her eye removal fantastically. I have to pat myself on the back for that one. My Mom and I watched her like a hawk. Emma’s navigation progress is amazing. She is really finding her way around our home with little to no problems. From everything I have read this is really fast progress. Do not feel bad if your blind hound is still stumbling in this area at one month. All hounds are different and have different time lines, just like people. This brings me to Emma’s mental state. This is where she is struggling the most. I can tell she is depressed and confused. Every morning when she wakes up and looks in my direction I can tell she hopes her blindness is a bad dream. It just makes me want to cry. Believe me, it is OK to cry. If Emma could cry I know she would. I know Chaps would as well. He is desperate to play with her and she is frightened of him when he gets in his rowdy boy play mood. The homeostasis of our pack is out of whack and none of us like it.

I am here to report how we are doing and these are the truthful facts. I hope that this helps others. This is going to be a long process and we are dedicated to helping Emma through it.

Remember, if you ask for people’s opinions or advise your are going to get it. Some of it may help, and some of it may hurt. Pick and choose what helps and forget the negative comments.

I am sure every month will get better. Emma will acclimate to her new life. Chaps will learn how to play on her terms, and me? I will probably learn the most, from our Emma. She is turning into a great teacher. Her class room (her blog) has endless seats. Pull up a chair and join her life lessons.

Emma receives a get well package from Audra!

March 8th, 2008 - 6:06 pm KY Time

Emma Rudert pawing in! Guess what? I received a precious package today! What a great way to make a girl feel better!

I love my new get well stuffed bunny toy and treats! Chaps got a bunny toy also! Lucky boy!

What’s a better way to heal than with get well bunnies and treats?

3964

The package arrived from our bestest friend Audra! As you can see I had to have both bunnies to start off with and Chaps let me! This is rare and quite amazing. My Great Uncle usually get first dibs, on everything!

3967

It wasn’t long before the big guy wanted them both! That’s OK, I was ready for one of Audra’s special peanut butter treats!

3961

Yummy!

3970

All of this excitement is wearing me out! I need a nap. Audra, I smell your kisses on my white bunny nose! That was even better than the peanut butter treat! Slurp, Love Emma Wanda Rudert

P.S. Bunnies make blizzards much better! Can someone grab my blankee? Thanks
