Old stuff on the internet – Kick it to the cyber curb!

April 10th, 2008 - 7:07 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and up to date information lovers:

Have you ever noticed how much old information is on the Internet? I remember back in the mid 1990s going to several pages that featured basset hounds. I just ran across a few of them today. The pages have not been touched in a decade. I wish people would delete these old pages. They really create a traffic jam for those of us who want to be up to date. They also deliver false information. One site made a comment, (8 years ago) that the person no longer had time for the site.

Huh? Take it down. Kick it to the curb!

Enough of my Internet wows!

UPDATE————-TRANSPORT CANCELLED! GOOD NEWS. HOUNDS ADOPTED!!!!

Howllo Fewllo Hound and Transporting Hound Lovers:

Louisville KY/IN/IL/MO/OK/TX/NM/Phoenix AZ **11-13 April** 2 Bassets

Here is the link that is updated daily. I hope you will pass this along if you know of anyone willing to help in the legs that are still open.

Please meet Comet and Cupid!!

These 2 very social Bassets were surrendered to a “kill” shelter in Louisville, KY by someone claiming them to be “strays”, even though they’d been with these folks since last October. Comet and Cupid don’t deserve to be behind bars because of un-caring humans. There are 19 legs and 2 overnights involved for this transport, some along very difficult to fill corridors. Please help them get to rescue in Phoenix, AZ where they can be one step closer to finding a loving forever family!

If you’re able to assist with this transport, please do NOT respond to me on-list as I would hate to miss your offer. Please email me directly at pupsavr4life@cox.net (@cox.net) with the following information:

Emma had her 2 week prosthetic eye follow-up today from a strange spot I saw on it.

April 7th, 2008 - 5:05 pm KY Time

Hi Friends:

Today was Emma’s 2 week follow-up appointment for what I thought was an odd looking spot on her prosthetic eye. Her doctor agreed with me, that her eye looked better but he put her on an additional eye drop medication. We are to report back in 6 weeks. This was another 100.00 dollar visit. The visit 2 weeks ago cost about the same. Prosthetic eyes are very expensive and I want my readers to have the full benefit of what the long term costs can be. Emma was prescribed an additional eye drop today called, Prednisolone Acetate Ophthalmic Suspension USP. She is to remain on the other two ointments she is on as well. That means that I am giving Emma eye drops and ointments 4 times per day. I would think that most people who work away from home would find that difficult. I have said it before, and I will say it again. Prosthetic eyes are just not worth it. Emma has one, and I am not going to have it removed….yet, but how much can a wallet take? She is blind!

Wow, what about that Oprah show today?

April 4th, 2008 - 6:06 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and puppy mill haters! I vacillated all day over if I was going to watch it or not. I did not know if I could take it. I finally decided I had to take it and turned it on. I spent most of my time cleaning my microwave because I could not look at the video footage. At least I listened and learned!
4 MILLION DOGS ARE PUT DOWN EVERY YEAR? sick, sick, sick.

Mainline Animal Rescue brought this to Oprah’s attention via a billboard they placed in her sight on her way to work. It cost them 10,000 dollars but I am sure it will pay off.

The AKC made a statement, but it was like a whisper. Sup with that? It was very benign. Saying something like, if you buy a dog make sure it’s from a reputable breeder. I found it very curt. Any comments on that one?

In closing, I think 4 million dogs put down a year speaks volumes.
DEAFENING, INDEED!

Lucien the Love Machine Goes to the Rainbow Bridge:(

April 2nd, 2008 - 4:04 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and Lucien Lovers: I know there are many of you out there. Melynda made sure the love machine’s stories were told and I was one of the many who waited for each and every one of them. I love how Melynda named him Lucien after the American trombone player, Lucien Barbarin.

Just one of the many stories that made Lucien the hound’s life so colorful. Melynda is a good friend of mine and I asked her to write a bio for me so I could do a blog posting in Lucien’s honor. He was such a good boy and many people and hounds are going to miss him. I count myself as one of them.

Lucien the Love Machine Goes to the Rainbow Bridge

3-29-08

I adopted Lucien and his bonded companion Lillian from Homewoods Rescue for the Wayward Hound on September 10, 2006, about two months after my sweet Agnes Marie Basset Hound departed for the Bridge. This is her picture!

I had seen Lucien (Logo) on Petfinder before Agnes passed and I thought he was the most handsome basset I’d ever seen. He was ten years old, a very striking light lemon-and-white, but he looked so sad to be stuck in rescue. A few days after Agnes made her journey, I checked on him and he was gone from Petfinder. I contacted the rescue to make sure he had been adopted and had not gone to the Bridge instead, and his rescuer Marth asked me if I could make room in my heart for him and his bonded companion, Lizzy (now Lilly).

20061019_596.jpg

Lucien’s original family had put him into rescue as a senior after a death in the family. His last year he had been kept outside in the yard and he was very depressed. He had been adopted but was returned to rescue for bad habits like separation anxiety and sleeping on the couch. Their loss was my gain.

Lucien was very suspicious of me at first and kept to himself, but after about three days he seemed to realize all at once that this was to be his forever home, and he looked at me with the happiest, most radiant expression on his face that I’ve ever seen on anyone, human or hound. After that, his personality really came through and he began jumping on the couch, in the bed, on my lap, and barking at me to make his dinner on time. He was just so loving and happy and he especially loved to cuddle with my housemate Amanda, and she loved him right back.

A few days after I got them Lilly went into heat just as I was getting ready to take her for her spay, and that’s when Lucien earned his nickname,

“The Love Machine.”

381592_1204945194.jpg

He was neutered but he didn’t know that. He really thought the world would be a much better place with some more solid-white basset puppies in it. It didn’t work of course but he sure tried.

Fishin.jpgOver the next year and a half, Lucien and Lilly learned to enjoy car rides and trips and we went a lot of places in our BUV. We went to Petsmart, to House of Puddles frequently, to the Boardwaddle in Ocean City, NJ and to the BROOD Ramble in Williamsport, VA. Everywhere he went he always found a new doggie girlfriend and made lots of new human friends. At the BROOD Ramble, Lucien conned a family into giving him some of their lunch (a hot dog, with mustard and ketchup, cut up, on a plate) and he spent most of the day hanging out at the adoption booth. I don’t think he was shopping for a new family though.

Lucien was also a proud member of Kaylee’s Sitteruppers Club. He is sitting up at the bridge right now, most likely with it’s founder Bernie Johnson who passed the same week as Lucien.

Lucien_Sits_Up_4_Cheez.jpg

Lucien suffered from what we thought was coughing brought on by severe allergies and hayfever, and his vet prescribed allergy medication, but it wasn’t really helping so I made another appointment last week. He lost his appetite so I bribed him to eat with all his favorites: ham and scrambled eggs, Popeye’s chicken and biscuits, bologna and cheez sandwiches, cheezburgers, pancakes and bacon.
381592_1201793265.jpg

By Friday night, he had become very weak, had lost a lot of weight, and was having trouble breathing. When I took him in Saturday morning, they x-rayed him and discovered he had end-stage lung cancer. We never knew because he never showed any symptoms until right at the end. There was no hope for meaningful recovery, and keeping him here would have been selfish. So I made the very sad decision to send him to the Bridge.

Lilly has been grieving very badly, but our friend Marilyn at House of Puddles offered to let me adopt Lilly’s bestest furend, Becky, to be her new sister and companion. We got Becky the same night Lucien went to the Bridge so Lilly never has to be alone. Girl_Power.jpg

Lucien had a paw in Becky’s adoption because he couldn’t stand for anyone, human or hound, to be sad. And I know Lucien’s not alone either, because he joined his kitty Max who also made a sudden journey to the Bridge less than a month ago.

IMG_0622.jpg

He’s with his sister Agnes Marie Basset Hound and many others, including his friend Rudolph who followed his path yesterday. He leaves many sad friends and furends behind though Lucien touched a lot of lives.

Mommy loves you sweet boy…..

Rudolph makes his way to the rainbow bridge today:(

April 1st, 2008 - 3:03 pm KY Time

Howllo fellow hound and Rudolph lovers: Our big red boy made his way to the rainbow bridge today after a sudden onset of grand mal seizures. Many of you will remember Rudolph as one of the Seniors that my Mom and I picked up from the Campbell County, KY high kill pound. A wonderful woman named Chris paid for their boarding costs until we could transport them to the House of Puddles. Rudolph soon came to live as a foster from the HOP with Gail at the Farm. Gail states,

“I just received a phone call from the vets office. She had called Marilyn first and told her that it didn’t look like the medication was going to help him any. He had started coming out of the sedative and looked to be going back into another seizure. Before the vet could contact me, Rudolph went to the bridge on his own.

I am going to go pick him up and take him to the funeral home to be cremated. He will come back home and be buried in the flower bed outside where he use to love to lay these past warm days we have been having.”

Marilyn states, “The vet thought it could very likely be a result of the heartworms, causing a blood clot in his brain. I am so deeply grateful to Gail for giving Rudolph the very best last 3 months of his life that he could have had. He knew he was loved. Rest in peace, dear Rudolph.”

Here is a YouTube video I made of both boys’ journey to the HOP!

Yesterday, Marilyn sent me a few items from her Cafepress store as a thank you for all of the fund-raising efforts I have made for the HOP. Both items featured Rudolph, who she knew I cherished. Here are pictures of the items which I will treasure forever.

Marilyn has a Cafepress Store and you can purchase these items as well. If you purchase a Rudolph pillow, it will help to defray his medical costs which were exhorbanent. Here is the link to the pillow:

RUDOLPH AND HERMEY TOTE

It is a just a suggestion, but buying any of these items will help defray the vet costs for our dearly departed Rudolph. He only knew joy for 3 months of his 12 years and those were the ones at Gail’s farm with her and her family. They loved and fostered Rudolph for Marilyn at the
House of Puddles.

Oh, how I loved that boy…………….
