Who’s up for a road trip?
Howllo Fellow Hound and Waddling Dog Lovers: Look at this hotel in Victoria, BC! It is named
The Waddling Dog Inn and it’s mascot is a basset hound!
Most people leave their furry friends at home while at work but there are some pets that just belong on the job. Take three-month-old John IV, for example, the newest basset hound at the Quality Inn Waddling Dog Hotel in Central Saanich.
Guests and staff have long been crazy about the bassets, which have served one after another as mascots of the hotel at the corner of Patricia Bay Highway and Mount Newton Cross Road. Staff cried when John III died a few months ago.
Now, silky-soft John IV, with a tail on automatic-wag, and who promptly rolls over for stomach rubs, is on duty 24-7, almost always at the front desk. With skin so loose you can grab a handful, this puppy specializes in cute. Flopping down (he does that a lot) on the lobby carpet, his long ears fold around him while his drooping eyes look upward.
Melanie Vallis cuddles John IV and says the basset hound mascots have attracted people and staff to the Waddling Dog.

“You wouldn’t believe how many people come here because of the dog,” says Melanie Vallis at the front desk.
Staff are creating a scrapbook of the dogs. “There are a lot of us who have worked here a long time and I don’t know, the Johns might be the reason for that,” she said with a smile.
John represents the theme of the 30-room, pet-friendly hotel and boosts staff morale, said Ross Borland, general manager. Human guests often volunteer to walk the hotel’s dog, especially in the summer. “He is really just a part of the whole ambiance.”
