Do you have a problem pill taker?

Howllo Fellow Hound and not loving the pill giving procedure, (at all)! I thought that I would share my trick for pill giving with my friends. Emma cannot tolerate protein. She is allergic to most everything so I have to be careful. That means no meat or cheese.

She is on antibiotics and pain medicine after her procedure.

Emma can extract a pill from anything and then hold it in her mouth, while wagging her tail until you walk away. Then, days later, you will find them scattered in the bed. NOT GOOD!

Here is my almost fail safe solution.

Give us our day, our daily bread pill taking method!

Buy a bag of soft white bread and a pill cutter.

These are Emma’s pills for the day. After I cut the big one into 4 pieces, she gets 5 pieces – twice a day.

As you can see, I have the 10 pieces of pill cut for her. 1/2 in the am and 1/2 in the pm. Believe me, I have tried everything and she can spit them out. This is the only method that works for smart girls like Emma.

Place each pill piece into a soft bread square and make a ball. Remember when you were a kid and balled up bread? Well, hounds are just kids and they love it too!

The bread balls are ready for the day, but why are there extra sections needing to be balled up?

Chaps gets the placebo!

More bread balls later…….Cat, Chaps and Emma

P.S. did you notice the star I drew near my thumb? That is how I remember things very important. I need more bread tomorrow.

Too cute…..love the placebo pills! I have this problem with Abby. She was on soooo many pills when we rescued her, and not eating anything, but I did find one thing that works. It’s Oscar Mayer Braunschweiger (a liver sausage). I pick off a little piece and ball it up w/the pill inside. The liver is so gooey and sticky that they just swallow it right down. AND, they love the smell….I think it covers up the pill taste too. This was the only thing that worked for me. Keep us posted on our sweet girl. Love you all!

Luckily, we have yet to have to give pills so when that time does come (hopefully not soon) we will remeber this. Bogart, Pumpkin and I are hoping all goes well these last long 11 days! haha

Our Emma is allergic to protein so I can not give sausage. The white bread seems to be OK for her. But if hounds are not allergic to protein, the liver sausage would be really yummy!

Slinky does not have Emma’s allergies to contend with, but Slinky does not like to take pills. I tried those pill pockets and Slinky did not like them at all; however, Slinky loves Sharp Cheddar Cheese. I cut a piece of cheese and press the pill or wrap the cheese around the pill and that works. I haven’t had any problems with this method unless I am out of cheese.

That is too funny Maureen! Yeah, Emma is allergic to cheese. So far the bread method has worked for her. The only reason I discovered it is because my nephew was over and I had to make some peanut butter sandwiches. Necessity if the Mother of invention!
