Do you belong to the Basset Hound Club of America?

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and BHCA Lovers:

I was just wondering if you belong to the BHCA? I have been a member for about a decade or more. I let my membership lapse once, I think. Anyway, one of the main reasons I belong is to keep up with the politics. Plus, like any club you get to vote for certain stuff. The membership comes with a subscription to Tally-Ho, the BHCA official publication. It has a lot of information about the show world and lots pictures of basset hounds stacking! LOL

Stacking, never heard of it! Now fetch my blankee!

Recently, the club has started an advisory committee for basset hound rescue headed by Larry Little. I have talked to Larry and asked to be a part of that committee. I am hoping to help out the rescue front as much as possible. Our all breed club has been really slow to come around and I think it will be fun to be involved in the process of a committee(?) The first thing I would change would be the wording on their website about rescue:

“While BHCA does not engage in basset rescue activities, there are basset hound rescue groups around the country working to find homes for homeless bassets. The groups whose links can be found on this website are supportive of our efforts to promote ethical practices in basset hound rescue.”

OK, they make it sound like participating in rescue is an activity that is not to be engaged in. It has the feeling of being somewhat beneath the Club. It really is almost funny. I know for a fact that there are members who engage in basset hound rescue. I am a member and I engage in basset hound rescue.

This area of our website is sorely lacking. We only have a very few basset hound rescues listed. I think they need my help, don’t cha think so? For example look at how the
Golden Retriever Club of American treats rescue. The underlined link will take you to this All Breed Club’s Rescue page. Carol Allen who is a top notch member of the GRCA just won an award at the Westminster Dog show for her work in breed rescue. Now that is a club to be emulated.

Anyway, food for thought. I think the time has come!

I was somewhat confused about that statement myself. I mean, why wouldn’t they “engage” in or at least somewhat “support” basset rescue. And maybe they do, I’m not a member so I really wouldn’t know. But yeah Cat, straighten em out!

Well I guess this makes sense to me about engaging in rescue, they rejected my membership after I sent in the application, check, and a 1 page story on my journey with Brutus. Apparently because I failed to have 2 sponser forms, I was rejected because I did not know anyone. I guess rescuing a basset who was “dropped off” at the humane society because his owners mistreated him and didn’t want to pay for the glaucoma medication isn’t good enough. Even when I paid to adopt him, get all his shots, monthly medication and then finally had to take out a loan to have the eye removal surgery with prothetics. They must have just thrown my personal story in the trash all because I am one of 2 basset owners in my big city of San Luis Obispo, CA. Oh did I mention that the reason I wanted to become a member was because eventually we wanted to start fostering bassets and start a club for my county. Even bought the domain name Slobassts.com before I sent the app. Thanks a lot BHCA. Sorry for the rant Cat, keep Chaps and Emma’s ears covered so they still think I am nice!

Years ago when I was looking to adopt/rescue a Basset the Guardian Angel Basset Rescue turned me down. They felt the animal would be alone for too long a period of time. I even got someone (one of my neighbors children to come in after school and take Slinky out), but they were still unwilling for me to have a Basset. I know they have the best interest in the dog a heart, but I think I am a pretty good Basset Slave.

I would like to be part of a club to help Bassets. I have worked a BassetFest in Wisconsin a couple of times.

    Maureen,

Let’s start one! At least I think will get accepted as member because I am a basset lover not because I am unimportant and no bassets live in my city!

I’m game, just what do we need to do?

It does seem sometimes that rescues (bassets and other breeds as well) are fussier with their rules than DSS is about placing children in foster homes. I think a lot of dogs miss out on good homes because they get too stringent for real people.

Hey Trisha, if you are still interested in getting a membership I will be your sponsor and I can get you another one. It is super easy.

Maureen, I am shocked that you were passed over. That ain’t right!

OM – It is a real problem in some rescues. I think that whole thing will change with the economy and the rapid influx of dogs.

Back when I worked at GE the going joke was if you had a pulse you could work in purchasing. I think if you have pulse and want a dog you can have one now. It is just my opinion.

BTW – I worked in purchasing. LOL
