New Thunderstorm contraption for Chaps???
Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and thunderstorm contraption lovers: Today we had a thunderstorm roll through at sunset. Grandma has had a trick up her sleeve and when she heard on the news, the threat of a storm she came right down to try it out. Her idea was to put cotton balls in Chaps ears and wrap a bandanna around his head to hold his ears down to muffle the sound.
I actually used those disc shaped cotton things that some gals use to remove makeup. They roll up and fit very nicely in the ear and Chaps seemed to be fine with it. Grandma fastened the bandanna in place.
I think he was more concerned about the contraption than the storm for a period of time?
The test was moving right along and it seemed to work?????????
Until there was a louder clap and off he went to freak out!
Poor Burger…….Pink is not his signature color???????
More trying new thunderstorm remedies later…..Cat, Grandma, Chaps and Emma
Poor Mayor! Photographed wearing PINK?! That will be in the Inquirer tomorrow!
That was a good idea though. The trouble would come with the big thunders that rattle the house. If we could come up with something that would really work for nervous canines, we could fund the HOP for years! (Does Marilyn have any nervous nellies in her flock of hounds?)
OMG I am laughing and sad for him all at the same time. Poor Mayor!!!
I won’t tell if Chaps doesn’t…but I wear the same pink bandanna under my bike helmet for a bit of comfort.
A bottle of Bach Rescue Remedy should ship to you today. It took the edge off our elderly Husky/Chow who could always be found in the shower during thunder storms. It’s all natural, made from flowers. If it doesn’t work on Chaps, you can take it yourself!
Love the pictures. Amazing how tightly a basset can curl their “happy-meter” tails so tightly between their legs!
Peter
I could have told you “pink” was not a color for Chaps. I think he’s more of an emerald green Basset. Also, didn’t you used to put a tight T-shirt on Chaps to help him during storms? I thought you said it made him feel secure.
Hi Cat,
Maybe Rescue Remedy will work.
Another ideas – didn’t someone on DD post about a phernome type plugin you can buy that calms dogs. It can be used for alot of anxiety causing situations.
Hope the Rescue Remedy works and you don’t need to try anything else.

Poor Chaps!! I have also read that rubbing them down with a dryer sheet helps–something about the static electricity in the storm?…if nothing else, they will smell nice;) Biggs and Leo could care less about thunderstorms–poor Harley goes quiet and starts pacing, his tail goes between his legs and he zooms over to the nearest corner in the living room and either tries to squeeze himself under the chair or just stands very still facing the corner with his head hanging down. In the bedroom my bed is at an angle and he’ll try hard to wedge himself between the bed and the wall. I feel so bad for him but he’s inconsolable!
Mary, Harley, Biggs and Leo
My Templeton and Lucky Puck hate the storms Lucky Puck gets in a corner and shakes and facws the wall and gets as close as he can to the wall and Templeton paces around the house. I haven’t found anything that has helped yet still working on finding something.
Poor Chaps Pink really isn’t your color it was a good idea to bad it didn’t work on the loud ones
Debbie
2 out of 4 of my hounds hate storms. Rugby knows a storm is coming before it even gets here. He starts walking away from all windows and faces a wall. Then as the storm gets closer he starts to shake. Then he cries and becomes a velcro dog. Harriet doesn’t know until it gets here (unless she sees Rugs freaking out) and when it gets here she’s a pacer. Back and forth, back and forth, back and forth…
And Harriet says that she thinks Chaps looked very handsome in his pink outfit!
Cindy, Chaps has always been in touch with his girl side. I love a man like that! LOL

Hey Debbie – I will let you know about the stuff that Peter is sending to Chaps. It might work for you!
Cat
Mary – I cannot rub down Chaps with a dryer sheet because Emma is allergic. However, I love that others reading this will get a great tip! I love that idea!
Poor Harley. I feel for you guys.

Mary – I will check on that phernome thing. I think my vet has that. I was just worried, once again about Emmers the delicate soul who can barely tolerate anything in the air!
