Dare I tell on the Mayor?
Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and telling on the Mayor Lovers! Well, I guess I will. Way back when, the Mayor was angry about having Emma in his life. We had a horrible transition with him and Emma.
The breeders told us that Chaps loved Emma and they were a bonded couple but that was not the case! It could have not been further from the truth. You see, Chaps never had an attachment to any human and when he got one he was frantic to keep it, aka me. He was so jealous of Emma and not one bit bonded to her. The breeders were wrong, wrong, wrong. As I look back on it, how could they have been bonded? Emma was a pup weeks old and Chaps was relegated to a pen for most of his life. He was a three year old male. He was frustrated and newly neutered.
It was a tough row to hoe as Emma can attest to. The Mayor hated her! You can see from the picture.
If we had known the true dynamics things might have been different. However, the breeder did not let us know. Looking back, it makes total sense.
Chaps hated Emma for months. Emma loved him from the get go!
This was not a love bite from Chaps. It was a hate bite.
We got through it. Now they are BFF!
More history later……Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma
Wow..this is a scary bite Cat.
I’d like some non-vet advice. Monty is 20-ish months old now and not yet neutered. We tried to have him neutered in January but his pre-surgery tests suggested a problem with his liver. We’ve had numerous tests since including ultra-sound pictures of his liver. He does not have liver shunting (blood vessels going around rather than through the liver).
The next step is to have him neutered and liver biopsied at the same time for $700-ish. Monty appears fully healthy and I’m torn what to do next. I’d like to have him neutered. How concerned should I be? I can start a modified diet now without having the poor dog biopsied. Is a liver biopsy a good idea?
Thanks!
Peter – let me ask someone who knows a lot more about thinks like this than me. She might not even know, but I really have no idea. I have never heard of this. I am so sorry to say. Let me check on it. Cat
i don’t really know what the details are of his condition but i can only give you my distinctly unmedical advice…i guess if they are going to have him under for surgery anyway…and i could afford it (thats the big one for me since i’m disabled ) i would get it done while he’s young and healthy just to know exactly what you are dealing with…so to have a baseline. to me i’d rather know now than wait until things are bad and you have to figure everything out in a crisis mode.
he’s young so his heart and lungs and other systems should be strong enough to handle everything too.
again…that’s just me…i could be totally off base…but if it was my guys and i think if i could afford it i would.

when i brought buster into the fold i already had cooper for about 3 years and miss casey the chessie for 12. both were not very happy with getting a crazed basset brother. buster was about 1.5 yrs olf and just neutered. i had been fostering english setters and some bassets and do dog sitting so they were used to other dogs in & out but buster is like no other one that has been thru here.
when miss casey passed about 5 months later…cooper barely reacted. buster when into full throw yourself on the ground, wail, carry on etc mourning. it was funny to watch. casey anc coop were buddies. she detested buster. but obviously the little beast adored her. there were no bites tho…screaming, grwling putting one into the ground yes, bites tho (thankfully no).
Nell certainly puts Sophie in her place on a regular basis, but has never hurt her. I consider them bonded (a 10 yr old sussex and 1 year old basset). If Nell goes outside and Sophie doesn’t go with her, Nell sits at the door and barks until Sophie joins her.
I had no idea that Chaps and Emma started on such a rocky road. How did you finally get Chaps over his jealousy?
Poor Emma!!! Now, look how Chaps is her protector, bless him! I know how awful it can be…a few days after we brought Leo home to foster, I had to keep him and Biggs completely separated for seven tortuous months (no Rotary picnic). Leo attacked Biggs repeatedly and Biggs, the most gentle of souls, then began to attack Leo (understandably) and poor Biggs was on edge constantly. My homelife was falling apart under the stress as Philip and I blamed each other for doing a good deed and fostering Leo. But…..we adored him at first sight, and decided to make the commitment with him, no matter what. Fast forward–it’s been almost a year since we reintroduced them, and they are now pals:) We all even pile in bed together most nights! I thank doG every day that we stuck it out because Leo is a huge lovebug:)

OMG! I would have never believed it! Are you sure the Mayor did this?
Our Emma must have the biggest heart and forgiving soul of anyone. I think her patience and kindness must have won the Mayor over.
OH MY! That’s the nastiest bite I think I’ve ever seen. I have to admire you Cat for doing whatever it took to stick with it and finally get them to be best friends. Now you’d never know. When I got Jethro he was a puppy and I had an 11 year old Springer Spaniel. Well, the springer died when Jethro was 3 and Jethro just freaked out on me. So, I thought I’d get him another pal. So we rescued Rugs. Jethro would not let Rugs in the house, on the doggie bed or wouldn’t let him drink out of his water bowl and was very upset about me using his past brothers bowl to feed him in. It only took several months before Jethro finally settled down and let Rugs start coming in the house and use the other dogs bed and bowl. Now Jethro is very bonded with Rugs and it’s so good to see. Then when we got Oz and Harriet Jethro started again. He attacked Harriet and made a very nasty cut on her ear that probably could have used stitches but I chose to just doctor it myself to save the rescue money. I have to say that I did a pretty darn good job and you have to look for the scar. He attacked Ozzie as well but Ozzie doesn’t fight back like Harriet so he didn’t get bit. What we don’t go through for these dogs huh? But it sounds like this is a very common thing. Thanks to all of you who rescue and take the time to work things out with the other canines in the house!!!
Cindy it was a real trip. I have to give most of the credit to Emma. She never, ever though ill of Chaps and never gave up on him. He still snaps from time to time but only when she wakes him up. He also would attack her when she was wearing the cone. Now, he does not know what to do without her. She has always felt that way about himz! Slurp!
Maureen – you are correct. Emma loved him from the moment she laid eyes on him. Even after he bit her she still loved him. She has a heart the size of the universe.
Kerry – It was a ruff road. Chaps was not fond of Emma at all. She was too much for him. He saw all the promise of a family that would love him and then the sharing part was just not working for him. I worked really hard. One thing that triggered his bad tude were toys that he thought were all his. So I went to the dollar store and bought 50 dollars worth of toys and the made the living room a sea of toys. You should have seen the look on his face. There was not way he could protect all of those toys. That day I noticed a big change. He kind of gave up. I slowly started taking the toys away to a manageable lot and now I give away toys to different places and hounds.
I wish I had taken a picture of that.
