Speaking of our friend Peter…….

June 6th, 2009 - 6:06 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Long ears lovers! In the previous blog posting you will learn who Peter is and see his sweet frame donations. This blog posting is about measuring basset hound ears. Peter read the posting where I measured the Mayor’s ears and he decided to see how his basset hound named Monty measured up with ear length! Keep in mind that Monty is a pup, and will have a final measurement in months to come.

Currently he weighs in at 7 and 1/2” long. I had to laugh when I saw this picture!

photo_4

Peter is getting ready to measure Monty and Tigger, Monty’s sister is not having anything to do with it. The look on her face says it all! Keep that thing away from me! Just too funny.

Monty is not too thrilled with it either!

photo_5

“GET ME THE BLEEP OUT OF HERE!”

Did someone say treat? Maybe, just maybe, I might tolerate a brief measurement!

photo_6

I was laughing so hard I cried. Oh the indignity of it all!

Come on residents, if Monty can suffer through it so can you! I think we need to knock Mr. Jeffries out of the box!

How long is 29.2cm anyway?

I think basset hound town could beat him, no matter how long his are. At least I want to try to find the hound with the longest ears. I wonder how they did the measurement?

More searching later………Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma

P.S. I have a feeling that Hermey at House of Puddles will be a serious contender!

Chaps is back to work:)

June 5th, 2009 - 7:07 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and back to work lovers: Chaps felt that it was important for his fellow residents to see that he is back to work, sleeping in his cube. He is like any other world leader that has to show his face after an illness or an injury.

img_1770

As you can see, his work is piling up. Work waits for no hound! Ah, I am sure I can chip in and plow through his back log. I am a faithful servant and tail maiden!

This morning his tail looks a little better. He slept through the night just fine (and is sleeping through the morning). LOL

More updates from the cube later….Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma

I forgot to show our dear readers Chaps boo boo bandage!

June 4th, 2009 - 6:06 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and forgetting to show the Mayor’s Boo Boo bandage. He is still resting. Here is his bandage, in case you want to see it!

img_1763

I took a very soft, clean rag, one I use to clean their ears with and wrapped it around his tail with lose surgical tape. He is laying in my office. He does not want Emma near him, so he got up when she tried to get in the bed.

Here is a closer shot.

img_1767

Well, that’s all for now. I am sure you could not live without these pictures! LOL

More later……..Love, Cat, Chaps and his tail, and Emmers bow bemmers, bed hog!

Chaps is resting and I am staring at his cyst.

June 4th, 2009 - 4:04 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and hating cyst haters! Wow, this is one angry, ugly cyst. I cannot believe how it expanded over the course of one night. The Mayor must have been in such pain.

Well, our vet told us that due to the location, swelling and infection he would not even consider removing the ginormous cyst at this time. He has Chaps on a high powered anti-biotic and pain pills as needed. I am also to do warm compresses twice a day for 15 minutes at a time. Chaps absolutely loves them.

I am hoping the cyst opens up and we can treat it without sugery. The vet told us it is entirely possible that he will just need maintance on it from time to time. The tail is a very touchy area to perform a cyst removal of this size. You have to have enough skin to close the margins. Without the proper amount of skin all kinds of problems will arise. He just will not that that risk which I am very thankful for.

Here is Grandma giving Chaps a massage while we waited for our vet to check out the Mayor. His tail is firmly down.

img_1755

Here is the Mayor ready to go before we even got started. Chaps is very much a DOG OF WORLD! Chaps was such a good boy and was very brave indeed! Mommy, not so much.

img_1759

His tail is now shaved in that area and bandaged with a light cloth. I will let it air out all day tomorrow. I just cannot take a picture of this thing for fear of my dear readers running and screaming into the night. The vet tech saw it and said, “Yuck – that thing is ugly”.

I whispered into the Mayor’s ear that she was only talking about the cyst, not him.

More helping the Mayor in his time of need later….Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma

OH NO! The Mayor has a health problem this morning!

June 4th, 2009 - 8:08 am KY Time

PICTURES, BUT NOT TOO GRAPHIC

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and not wanting the Mayor to be hurting lovers: The only reason I am able to do this blog right now is because my vet is not able to see Chaps until 11:00 this morning.

Chaps woke up this morning with a huge, golf ball sized cyst on his tail that is getting ready to pop. He must have been chewing on it all night. It is really angry and inflammed.

img_1750

The actual cyst is under all of that fur and it looks so painful.

img_1751

You can see a little bit a blood but this is really nothing how it looks underneath. Chaps is lightly crying.

img_1752

Oh, I feel so sorry for my big boy. I felt the cyst on the day I picked up Chaps. I know every lump, bump, and hair out of place on both of their bodies. I always check it to see if it gets bigger and it has been the same, about the size of a grape. As a matter of fact, I thought I felt it last night. Regardless, during the night it became a problem for him. It probably started causing him pain and then that led to the chewing.

You guys know me. I am going to worry like crazy. Well, I better go now and get him ready. I am going to be early and just sit in the car. After we get Chaps loaded I am going to come back in and feed Emmers. She is being so good.

More tail updates later……Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma

This is just a test, to measure basset hound ears!

June 3rd, 2009 - 6:06 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and testing the length of your hound’s ear lovers! OK, this is just a test! I wanted to do just one ear to see how it went! How long are the Mayor’s ears? So, I had my friend Lisa take a picture of me just holding one of the Mayor’s ears out like this. It was in a somewhat relaxed position.

mayor-relaxed-ear

Then, I wanted to measure his ear. He has such delightful, heavy, long, beautiful, luscious, soft, and long ears. So I wanted to measure one of them.

I took a soft tape measure and placed the tip to his skull where the ear connects. I then pulled the tape out tight, but not the ear. I just left it in perfect position.

mayor-measure-ear

It measured 10”, almost perfectly! That is pretty impressive! What do you think?

As you can see from this picture that I cropped the tape measure is up side down!

img_2054

It is the same exact picture as taken above, only cropped.

If you want, you can take your own pictures and I will start an entire sub blog for this. I think we should all follow the same format. Just lightly pull your hound’s ear like I am doing in the picture. Place the end of the tape measure to the skull right were the ear attaches. (cloths ones work better) and measure to the tip! If nothing else, it is fun and makes a great picture!

More having fun later with 10″ ears! Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma

Famous Basset Hounds!

June 3rd, 2009 - 6:06 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and keeping track of the famous hound lovers! LOL!

I love keeping track of all things basset hounds and I have been wanting to do a sub blog category on famous basset hounds for a long time. I know all of our basset hounds are famous in their own right but his sub blog is some what different. I want to do features on bassets like, Boswell, Cleo, Hugo (Marilyn Monroe’s basset), bassets in movies and more. By more I mean basset hound that are heroes and sometimes touch us even more than the hounds in print or in the movies.

I thought it would be fun and touching! So, my graphic designer and I worked on a new header for this sub blog today. It is not up yet. There will be some fun flash details attached to it. I thought you might like to see it before it goes up as a header.

730x297-famous-hounds-header1

If you are wondering???????? Chaps and Emma will most likely wind up in this category at some point, but not now. They are not “famous” enough yet! Who knows what famous means? I have some pretty obscure stuff in my pocket.

I will look at published authors who showcase basset hound and movies that show our dear breed. It will be fun. I actually think Lily and Chloe qualify but they will be down on the list. I am pretty sure I will start with Boswell. He is my favorite famous basset!

boswell

It will be fun and I hope many of you will send in some famous hounds. Famous is all in a word. Do you have a story?

More famous stories later………Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma

Vintage shots of Chaps as a Baby!

June 1st, 2009 - 6:06 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Chaps as a baby lovers!

Can you believe it? Our Mayor was once a baby! A baby boy! I am so sad that I did not know my big guy as a baby but he is still the biggest baby ever! I call him my baby every day! These pictures were taken by his breeders almost nine years ago. They did not have very many, but the ones they did have I treasure!

chaps-as-a-baby

Who knew he would grow up to be the Mayor of an entire town? Helping basset hounds far and wide find their place in the world. He sure found his!

More finding your place in the world later…..Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma!

June 1st, 2009 - 6:06 pm KY Time
