A public service announcment from your Mayor…

September 20th, 2009 - 7:07 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and loving to travel the National parks lovers: This public service announcement from your Mayor is about a six-episode series directed by Ken Burns that will start airing next Sunday evening on your local PBS stations. It is called:

THE NATIONAL PARKS: AMERICA’S BEST IDEA

Filmed over the course of more than six years at some of nature’s most spectacular locales from Acadia to Yosemite, Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon, the Everglades of Florida to the Gates of the Arctic in Alaska THE NATIONAL PARKS: AMERICA’S BEST IDEA is nonetheless a story of people: people from every conceivable background rich and poor; famous and unknown; soldiers and scientists; natives and newcomers; idealists, artists and entrepreneurs; people who were willing to devote themselves to saving some precious portion of the land they loved, and in doing so reminded their fellow citizens of the full meaning of democracy. It is a story full of struggle and conflict, high ideals and crass opportunism, stirring adventure and enduring inspiration – set against the most breathtaking backdrops imaginable.

I am really excited about watching because I want to re-visit as many of these parks as possible in the coming years with the kids.

I was really lucky as a kid myself to enjoy many of them with my family! From Mount Rushmore to Mammoth Cave we camped across the USA.

That is me on the far right. I remember that it was chilly that morning and Mommy put us in our terry cloth swim suit cover ups! It was a summer vacation so we did not have sweaters with us!

I had to laugh when I looked at the important men carved into stone. See that place on the far left? Not exactly next to President Washington, but on that far end. I can see the Mayor carved there, looking off, just as majestic as the other fellows.

Doesn’t that look perfect for the Mayor?

OMG! I can see it plain as day!

More setting recorders later and dreaming about stone carvings….Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma

This is cool! I’m going to try and remember to watch it because I too want to travel some day and see these parks. I want to see some state parks too. What a cute kid you were Cat. So, when will the stone carving begin?

I have seen this series advertised, and I will be watching it too.

I agree that mass does look like Mayor Chaps but it a very handsome rugged way. I am surprised with all of Chap’s responsibilities he had time to sit for this sculpture, but then again, preserving history is very important to our Mayor.

Cat, I can somewhat already make out a basset hound face in that part of the rock–I agree, Chaps’ handsome face would be perfect in that spot–it just cries out for it!

P.S. Cat, we got the Yellow Pages with the Mayor’s pawtograph!!!! Thank you, it’s wonderful!

I agree – Let;s start a grass roots effort to get Chaps on Mt. Rushmore. What a party we will have when all the residents travel there for the unveiling!!!Imagine the Basset Butt pics there, Cat. LOL

Thanks for the reminder, Mayor. Bailey and I will be sure to set our DVR.

oh i can just imagine the hoopla! you must name me as part of the mayor’s “team”..what with all my nps experience with security and such!

for all my kvetching about working at the “bitch in the bay” AKA the statue of liberty and other national park sites…it was truly an honor to do so…i took pride in protecting and preserving these grest sites of our heritage for our country. it sounds hokey but they do belong to all of us…be they natural, cultural or historical. watch ken burns series. enjoy it. i hope it brings the public as much enjoyment and interest to the nps as it did to the civil war. i hope it brings much needed funding.

it used to be said that the nps was the lowest paid federal agency…BUT it had the 2nd highest employee morale…2nd only to the USMC…i doubt that is possible. it also used to be said that low pay could be measured in sunsets…now substandard housing and foodstamps don’t really cut it…but still it is a great career with many opportunitites.

i feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to have worked at liberty island, ellis island, sleeping bear dunes, fire island, gateway nra, castle clinton and to have been detailed to FLETC, cape cod, springfield armory, smoky mts area, etc during my 15 yr career…

so…watch the series. & then go visit a national park service site. talk to a ranger, historian, interpreter, cultural resource specialist, maintenance man, law enforcement ranger, who ever…but get out & visit z& enjoy and learn about what is yours….& thank them for a job well done.

& take your bassets on the trails…if they are permitted….it’s their history too.

Lois – what a great comment from an expert! I am fascinated by your experience. I am really excited about the series and some day traveling with my hounds to these areas that we own, as USA citizens.

I have been to many of them but I was just a child. I want to seem them again as an adult. I just cannot wait! America! here we come….

I can see Mayor Chaps carved there. I would most happily visit it too, for that is not to far from where I grew up in Montana.

If the Mayor were to be carved into the stone, it should be renamed: Mount Hushmore! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!
