Ever wonder what a basset dalmatian mix looks like?

September 8th, 2009 - 7:07 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and wondering what some mixes look like lovers! I guess, it would be your classic mutt. Oh how I love a classic mutt. Anyway, this litter came from the rural areas in the middle of nowhere OK. My friend, Chris Dowd helped rescue the Mom and Dad, both bassetmatians. The Mom and Dad have been adopted but the pups are still looking for homes. There should be no problem placing them but I had to show you how cute beyond belief they are.

If it were not for the Mayor, who is really over the whole puppy thing, this little girl might have had my name all over her. I think I would have called her Gracie, for her gray face.

Miabassetmation

Can you believe how utterly cute she is? Emma would have loved her to pieces.

I have just confirmed the age old question of, “is there love at first sight?” Yes, age old questioners, yes indeed!

Let’s hope that this little girl gets adopted by someone who lets us keep up with my unrequited love!

Howllo fellow Basset Hound and September Morning Lovers! Well, Grandma and I are sure one of those.

You should see Chaps looking at me while I blog about Neil Diamond. Wow, I think he really loves Neil as well. It soothes him. OK – I am going to sneak out to get my camera which of course is in the dining room.

OK, he was still listening – This is an actual picture of Chaps listening to Neil Diamond this Foggy September Morning……

We hope you enjoy your September Morn…..

The Mayor, potentially affected by budget cuts???????

September 7th, 2009 - 6:06 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and say it ain’t so lovers! Could it be? Could our Mayor have been affected by the famous, “budget cuts”, we all know so much about. Finally, there was to be a bit of joy in this cruel world when the Mayor was contacted about potentially being on the early morning shows in New York City, including the TODAY SHOW!

OK, here is how I arrived at a fairly logical conclusion that the Mayor was passed over for a portion of his 15 minutes of fame.

I was in my kitchen on Friday morning feeding the kids and milling around. I had THE TODAY SHOW on. Just as I was pouring a shot of POM WONDERFUL for myself I heard a variation of the following……

Next up we will be talking with so and so of some Dog Magazine (forgot which one). She will be introducing some new green products for grooming your dog and how to save money when buying toys.

Just then, my POM WONDERFUL did not taste so wonderful. It all fit. It was the first week of September. They were talking about grooming products and saving money on pet toys. I was pretty sure the Mayor had been passed over.

img_2570

So I watched the segment and it was pretty lame. The Mayor would have nailed it and made it much better. However, I have to admit that they show cased some NY City SPCA dogs up for adoption. That was a good thing.

But get this. This is main reason I am glad we did not go. I could have not held a straight face had the woman being interviewed tried to give Chaps a piece of aluminium foil to play with. Yes folks, this lady said that aluminum foil made a nice cheap toy for pets. WT heck? Aluminum foil??????? Come on….. Take an old T-shirt and braid it.

ATTENTION, THIS JUST IN FROM YOUR MAYOR, DO NOT GIVE YOUR PETS ALUMINUM FOIL!

So, I called the woman who called me and guess what? I was right. She said that due to budget cuts they went with local dogs instead of incorporating the Yellow Pages win into the segment. How they were going to do that I have no idea.

Was the Mayor going to look up Reynolds Wrap in the Yellow Pages?

More sad we got passed over but maybe it was for the best, later……Cat, Chaps and Emma

Rare basset hound art screen commissioned by Mrs. Mable Tottie – SOLD

September 7th, 2009 - 12:12 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Mable Tottie Lovers! This will be a very long but very interesting posting about how everything concerning basset hounds is related to the Lily Book! LOL! Stick with me and I can prove it as it relates to the acquisition of this “Maud Earl” masterpiece commissioned by Mrs. Mable Tottie back in the late nineteenth century.

Some of you may remember the auction and sale of this breath taking screen which took place back in February of 2009. This rare and important piece of basset hound history sold for just under 27,000 dollars.

Maud Earl

Barkfest Breakfast at Bonham’s.

Here is the blog posting I did about it two days after the sale.

MAUD EARL ACQUISITION

Yesterday, I received my Tally Ho, the official publication of the Basset Hound Club of America, and there was a very detailed article about the acquisition and the couple (Jim and Sharon Dok) who bought it. (PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE)

BREAKING NEWS UPDATE – 4-11-10

THE BASSET HOUND CLUB OF AMERICA HAS DEMANDED THAT I TAKE DOWN THE ARTICLE IN OUR PUBLICATION THAT I POSTED IN THIS BLOG REGARDING THIS PIECE OF BASSET HOUND HISTORY. I HAVE NO IDEA WHY THEY WOULD DO SUCH A THING. IT IS JUST ALARMING!

THE BASSET HOUND CLUB OF AMERICA DOES NOT WANT ME TO REPORT ON THIS WONDERFUL PIECE OF BASSET HOUND HISTORY FOR SOME REASON. WHY? I HAVE NO IDEA. IT IS ABSOLUTELY CRAZY. JUST DOWN RIGHT RIDICULOUS. THIS IS BASSET HOUND HISTORY! I WONDER WHAT MABLE WOULD THINK? I BET SHE WOULD BE SHOCKED. THE BHCA SHOULD BE OVER JOYED THAT SOME ONE SUCH AS MYSELF IS SHOWCASING THIS PIECE OF HISTORY BUT INSTEAD, THEY ARE MIRED DOWN IN LEGAL COPYRIGHT ISSUES? CAN YOU EVEN BELIEVE IT? WHAT ARE THEY THINKING?

(article removed per the BHCA request???????) For what reason I will never know.

BUT FEAR NOT, MY RESEARCH IS FAR BETTER THAN ANYONE HAS DONE AT THE BHCA AND IT IS AS FOLLOWS…..PLEASE ENJOY!

What I found most exciting about this article is that fact that this screen was commissioned by Mrs. Mabel Tottie in the late 19th Century. You could call me somewhat obsessed with Mrs. Tottie. I started reading about her back in the mid 1990s. I remember seeing a picture of her and thinking that she looked like my Grandma on my Dad’s side. I kept her picture on my book case and I would think about how in a different life we could have been friends. Her love of the basset hound breed intrigued me.

MRS-MABEL-TOTTIE

Mrs. Mabel Tottie

(taken from the book, DOG SHOWS AND DOGGIE PEOPLE, 1907)

As several of the leading fanciers of the quaint and aristocratic-looking Basset-hounds have from various causes ceased to support the variety, it has been a good thing that so zealous a champion has been found in the subject of this sketch, who has collected a very strong and typical team of Roughs and Smooths, amongst them being several champions and many promising youngsters.

It would be impossible in the space at my disposal to give even a summary of the numerous honours won by the kennels at Coniston Hall, a beautiful place between Leeds and Hellifield. But the annals of the leading shows for some years past will prove that many of the principal prizes and trophies open to Bassets have found their way to Coniston Hall.

Mrs. Tottie is the wife of Major J. B. G. Tottie, J.P., whose tastes as an ornithologist and breeder of prize stock in horses and cattle are well known, and who has carried off many prizes at the best shows in the kingdom. Before Mrs. Tottie took up Bassets, she devoted her energies for a while to Skye Terriers, with which she was moderately successful, but I think of late years she has almost entirely given them up. However, she has other strings to her bow, as she keeps a few high-class Bull dogs, which have already made their mark on the show benches, and keeps as house pets some of the charming little Blenheim Spaniels, which are likely to benefit by the patronage of such a spirited fancier.

This lady, I am informed, takes a personal interest in her hobbies, and devotes much of her time to the superintendence of the kennel arrangements, and to this is doubtless due the great success which has attended her efforts.

MRS-TOTTIE-S-BASSET-HOUND-GRAVITY-AND-LITTER

MRS. TOTTIE’S BASSET-HOUND GRAVITY, AND LITTER.

Probably at the present time no other kennel, in this country at least, can show such an array of high-class Basset-hounds as are now located at Coniston Hall, and I am pleased to be able to give excellent portraits of this lady and of four of her pets, and hope she may long be included in the ranks of Doggy People, amongst whom she has so many friends.

End of profile of Mrs. Mable Tottie in the Book called, DOGGIE SHOWS AND DOGGIE PEOPLE, written in 1907.

Check out this incredible picture I found of the screen inside of her Coniston Hall sitting room.
Just breath taking!

Screen in Mrs. Tottie's home

This is where Mrs. Mable Tottie raised her beloved Basset Hounds, Coniston Hall, between Leeds and Hellifield – England.

Coniston Hall is now a hotel.

It was fun for me to find out as much as I could about Mrs. Tottie. So, when I learned that she was the one that commissioned the screen I was enchanted to find another fascinating detail about Mrs. Mable Tottie. Then, I was shocked at how the rare and significant piece of art was taken apart by the winning bidders. I personally would have NEVER had the paintings removed from the screen. In my opinion, by doing that, the value of the piece lost an incredible amount of it’s meaning. The history of the Mable Tottie commission is just as significant (if not more) and valuable as the art itself. This was an important, if not the most important, piece of rare basset hound art in the world. Without Mrs. Tottie this piece would have never been commissioned. Mrs. Tottie did her homework and picked one of the leading, fashionable, canine painters of her time to bring her vision to life.

It should have been kept just the way Mrs. Tottie had commissioned and wanted it. Eventually, it could have been donated to a museum. The Tally Ho article states that a critical decision was made to remove the paintings from the screen. I have no idea what that means. I would love to know what that critical decision was. The screen looks to be in fine condition. Nothing was mentioned in the catalog that the screen was falling apart.

But I am not the one who won the piece and the couple who did can do whatever they want! One thing about art is that is totally subjective. I have my opinions about treasures such as this and no one will convince me other wise. However, my opinion is no match for the highest bidder. They get the final say.

Now the Mrs. Mable Tottie commission is just a photograph on the internet.

So, how does this piece of basset hound history relate to the Lily book? I wonder if anyone even knows? This is page 28 of the Lily book.

Thank you Mrs. Tottie for your inspiration and good taste.

Big Joey – a guy after your heart!

September 5th, 2009 - 6:06 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and wondering about Big Joey Lovers: Well, we are home now after going to visit our Big Joey down in Grant County KY ! He is such a good boy.

Before we left, Grandpa came down to my place to babysit the kids. He always brings rye bread heels that he saves for them.

img_3289

Grandma and I took off and arrived at the exit for the Grant County Pound in 43 minutes.

img_3291

That sign to the right says Animal Shelter. Which by the way is right next door to the Grant County Detention Center. When we pulled in I turned to Grandma and asked her, “why would they need barbed wired to contain the dogs?” DUH………

I was meeting a guy named Steve today and he told me that he would meet me outside the gates after he sprung the inmates. I thought he was referring to the dogs that he was taking to an adoption fair but he actually meant that he was springing some of the inmates to work at the pound for the day!

So, Grandma and I are waiting at the gates and down the driveway walks six guys in orange T-shirts that say, INMATE. As they approached us, Steve turns to one of them and said, “Go get Big Joey for the basset hound ladies”.

img_3292

I glanced at Grandma and she looked a bit ashen. I was thinking – buckle up buttercup, we are going to see Big Joey get sprung as well. I was wondering what a Class D Felon was. I saw it on a sign we passed by.

Steve wanted to show us how good Big Joey was at getting his ears cleaned and he did do great. A few days ago he was screaming in pain. Big Joey loves Steve and actually was jumping and crying for him.

img_3295

This is the big guy looking at Grandma. His tail never stopped wagging.

img_3304

I seem to wear the same T-shirt in every photo that I am working with a rescue hound. I think I might need a new look! LOL

img_3307

Oh what the heck, the hounds don’t mind!

img_3308

Who amongst us think that Big Joey looks like Rudolph? Remember Rudy? If not you can search for him on this blog and see pictures. I wonder if I have the same shirt on? hehe

img_3309

Here are two more pictures of Big Joey……..

img_3315

img_3317

Grandma and I did not take Big Joey for a walk because the inmates were working outside. Steve told us that Big Joey would be neutered this week and after his recovery Suzanne of Mid-Atlantic will transport him to New Jersey. I reported back to Suzanne and informed her that the big guy is adoptable and ready to roll. There was some concern about his demeanor but that was all chalked up to his massive ear infection. Steve could hardly touch him prior to the meds and now Big Joey is jumping in his lap for love.

Suzanne might have Big Joey and another KY hound picked up at the airport. That makes my heart soar to think of Big Joey flying to his forever home.

Of course I cannot end this blog posting without a cute rear end shot with Mountain Dew. How Kentucky can you get?

We are off to visit with Big Joey:)

September 5th, 2009 - 9:09 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and off to see BIG JOEY lovers: I was just sitting here doing my Map Quest and getting ready to go see our homeless, larger than life, hound in Williamstown, KY Pound.

big-joey

Here is the Map:

map

Big Joey is in the Grant County pound which is about 45 minutes away. They seem very rescue friendly. I am going to report back to Suzanne Fitch of Mid-Atlantic Basset Hound Rescue in New Jersey about the big guy. Suzanne has pulled Big Joey. You can read more about that in the blog posting right below.

The Grand County Pound is not open today because they are holding an adoption fair at the Lexington, KY horse park. That is a really fun place to visit if you ever are in the Bluegrass state.

I am sure you might have guessed how Chaps feels about Mommy leaving him today….

He is a bit down in his cups, but he knows that it is the right thing to do.

Labor of Love Day for Big Joey!

September 4th, 2009 - 1:01 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Labor of Love Day Lovers! How do I come up with these titles? I don’t know, I guess it’s a gift of mine! ROFLOL!

Anyway, just take a look at this guy. His name is Big Joey and he is in a shelter about an hour from me in the Grant County Pound! They state on Pet Finder,

“*Big Joey is the largest basset hound we have ever seen! He was not well-taken care of by his former owner, so now he needs some help. He has an ear infection, but when we tried to treat it, he got quite testy with us – it must hurt really bad. Big Joey needs someone who can accept his flaws and love him anyway. Everyone deserves love. Even Big Joey.” *Note from Cat…clearly they have never seen Chaps!

big-joey

Big Joey has been at the pound for quite awhile but no one has adopted him. Probably because he has a horrible ear infection. He was really in pain.

The people at the shelter were very kind to keep him for so long. They all love him and say what a good boy he is now that his ear infection has cleared up. Suzanne Fitch of Mid-Atlantic Basset Hound Rescue has claimed him and he will being going to New Jersey in short order after we get a transport set up.
(Fa gedda ’bout it BIG JOEY) – hehe

big-joey-2

Since we have a long weekend ahead of us and, well, I am not one to shy away from visiting a hound in need, Grandma and I are going to go visit Big Joey tomorrow. We are not bringing him back with us because the vet at the Grant County Pound has agreed to neuter big Joey for a very fair price. Plus, his ears are almost healed and he even jumped into Steve’s arms today. Steve works at the pound and he agreed to let me come tomorrow while he is cleaning and remodeling the shelter. So, for Grandma and I it will be a LABOR OF LOVE DAY! We can’t wait to meet Big Joey and take him a few treats (shhhh, don’t tell anyone). We will take him for a walk and have a nice belly rubbing session. I can’t wait!

Macaroons loom large at lunch!

September 4th, 2009 - 12:12 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Macaroon Lovers! Well, Emma is sure one of those. Chaps also, but I really thought Emma was going to explode if she did not get a bite. She must really love the smell of coconut. OMG I love Macaroons and my sister had them last night for desert. She sent me home with a doggie bag that had some of the delicious delights inside.

img_3258

I don’t know, what do you think? Who likes Macaroons more? Emma or Mommy….

I vote for Emma!

img_3261

It is amazing to me how a hound with no eyes can be as expressive as Emma is. It blows my mind every day. If she wasn’t allergic to everything in her world I would buy her Macaroons by the truck load. It might be a good thing I can’t do that or I would be a wide as a truck. Her and I would need a truck to haul us around in. BEEP – BEEP, when we would back up. OK, OK – You get the point!

More Macaroons later…..Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma
