Cary, NC – Home robbed while basset hounds sleep!

January 12th, 2010 - 6:06 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and locking your doors lovers! Who does not lock their doors? Do you? Anyway, if you don’t, please do. There are rashes of this type of crime all over the USA. Flat screen TVs are light and taken right off of a wall very easily.

This video is short but a good glimpse of the “guard dogs” is in it..

http://abclocal.go.com/wtvd/story?section=news/local&id=7213063

Walter and Sullivan

Police say someone burglarized a home in the Lochmere neighborhood in Cary.

Authorities believe the burglars entered the home through an unlocked door.

Shira Rose says when husband woke up Sunday morning; he soon noticed something was wrong.

“He came up, he realized as he was coming up the stairs that we’ve been robbed and he was like ‘Shira, did you move the TV’ and I was thinking how am I going to move that big screen TV by myself,” she said.

The Rose family says someone walked into their home early Sunday morning and took several electronics, including a flat screen TV and a laptop computer – all while they slept in the second floor of the home. The burglars overrode the motorized garage door to get it all out.

Their two Bassett hounds Walter and Sullivan were also inside the home, sleeping next to the big screen TV the family says was stolen.

“It was unusual that I did not hear a peep from them, because they usually greet people when they walk through the door,” Rose said.

The family says they are shaken as are neighbors.

“Just to think that I have two children, my mother-in-law is here, people can walk into my house and I don’t even hear them, it’s a scary thought,” Rose said.

But Rose says perhaps what’s more troubling is the fact that the burglars took her digital camera, which had pictures of her 5-year-old son’s birthday party.

Her son, Brooks, is autistic and Rose says it was the first time he understood the meaning behind his birthday.

“I have no memories of that, you know, I have them in my head, but I can’t give them to him,” Rose said. “Brooks is everybody’s child, not just my child and that part upsets me.”

Police are warning residents to keep all doors and windows locked to help prevent these kinds of thefts. They also want residents to call if they see suspicious or idling cars in neighborhoods – especially at night.

End of article………

Wow, that is really scary. I just get the feeling that they were robbed by someone they know. Howl ever, flatties are a huge thing to steal. There was even an alert in my city to close your curtains at night so the thieves don’t see your flattie!

More importantly, protect your hounds. I am so glad nothing happened to them or the family.

Emma’s sister Ch. BoBac Duluxe of Switchstand, ROM passes away:(

January 11th, 2010 - 7:07 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Emma’s Sister Lovers…. Her name was Diva and she was pick of the litter. Here she is right in the middle…

emma's litter group

Emma is on the very end to the right and Diva is 2 over from her to left if you are viewing the picture.

Diva passed away recently from cancer. I was not advised of her passing but found out from a third party. Apparently, Diva had a tumor in her stomach and was sent to the bridge during her surgery. Diva, like Emma was only 5 years old. Also, like Emma, Diva had primary glaucoma and lost one of her eyes.

Diva1

I was shocked by her death because I had contacted her owner in early December 2009 to inquire about her health. I was hurt and saddened that this breeder and BHCA judge did not think enough about Diva’s sister, our Emma, to let me know. I find this unconscionable.

Diva, (Ch. BoBac Duluxe of Switchstand, ROM) was recently awarded the top producing bitch of 2009 as reported by the Tally Ho A very detailed explanation of this title can be found in the comment section by Mary. Thank you Mary.

Also reported in the Tally Ho was that Diva was owned by Richard and Sharon Nance of BoBac Bassets but that was not correct. Diva was owned by Doug and Missy Taylor but came from BoBac by Richard and Sharon Nance. Again, she was Emma’s sister. Their parents were Dawn’s First Light and Titan.

I am not sure how many litters Diva had but her winning puppies in 2009 were listed as:

Ch. Switchstand Cannonball
Ch. Switchstand Motor Queen
Ch. Switchstand Storm Queen
Ch. Switchstand Katy Flyer of BoBac
Ch. Switchstand Avalanche
Ch. Switchstand Challenger

Poor Diva – May she now rest in peace…

For Alexandria basset hound, magnetic toy pieces were an almost-fatal attraction

January 11th, 2010 - 2:02 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and words to the wiser lovers………

ALEXANDRIA MINNESOTA A sick puppy taught Tina Qualls and her children a lesson they won’t soon forget.

Always pick up your toys.

The Christmas season for Qualls and her children, Zachary, 7, Orion, 6, and Sorsha, 4, was a prolonged one. The family attended four different family celebrations and toys were in no short supply.

The boys were ecstatic when they received Magnetix, magnetic construction toys that consist of a combination of plastic building pieces and steel balls that can be connected to form various shapes and structures. The boys couldn’t get enough of snapping those little magnets together to see what shapes they could create.

But with Christmas over and life getting back to normal, the family basset hound, Daisy, was the worse for wear.

“She started throwing up and getting very sick,” Qualls said. “I thought she had gotten into some poison.”

After a couple days of vomiting, 9-month-old Daisy started to shiver and shake, so a worried Qualls called Dr. Bill Kraker, a veterinarian at Alexandria’s Animal Doctor. A routine exam showed nothing out of the ordinary, so Kraker took an X-ray of Daisy.

When Qualls saw the X-ray she knew immediately what it was.

“Right away I knew it was Magnetix,” Qualls said. “You could see them in the X-ray as plain as day.”

Unfortunately, the puppy had swallowed two of the magnetic pieces, and the X-ray showed that they had been pulled together in her intestine. Exploratory surgery was the only answer.

When Kraker opened up the dog’s intestinal tract, things did not look good. One magnetic piece had ended up in one part of the intestinal tract, and the other toy in a different portion.

“They had migrated together and pulled the intestines together,” Kraker explained. “They were so strong that they actually ripped through the intestinal wall.”

The perforation had “compromised the intestinal tract” and caused peritonitis, a “belly infection.”

The magnets had destroyed two sections of Daisy’s intestine. After removing the toys, Kraker had to remove one portion of Daisy’s intestine, sew it back up and then remove the other portion and repair it. He then had to flush out the abdomen with fluid and antibiotics. The surgery took about four hours.

After two days of careful supervision at Animal Doctor, Daisy was sent home with antibiotics and a restricted diet.

“Her recovery was uneventful,” Kraker said. “You can’t even tell she had surgery. She’s doing wonderfully. It’s amazing how fast they recover.”

Pet owners take heed

Daisy was lucky. She had owners who paid attention to her illness and sought out a doctor’s care before it was too late.

But it could have easily ended in tragedy, and the Qualls were determined not to let it happen again. Magnetic toys were history.

“When I told [the children] about it, we came home and threw them all away,” Qualls said. “I didn’t want anything like that in my house again. I was scared the kids would swallow them.”

According to Kraker, magnetic toys aren’t the only things that pet owners should be aware of. In his years as a veterinarian, he has a long list of strange items he has found in pets sticks, clothing, razor blades, utensils, fish hooks, sewing needles, socks, toys, balls, etc.

“The list could go on and on and on,” he said.

Obviously, sharp objects are the worst offenders, as is anything with a string as it can strangle and cut through the intestines.

“Dogs are just like children,” Kraker warned. “They are very curious and they explore by putting things in their mouth, and the chance of swallowing is very high.”

Kraker suggests a common-sense approach to preventing pets from ingesting foreign objects using the same caution as if you had an infant and keeping things out of reach but he also realizes that it’s easy to forget and leave things out.

He also says that if a dog gets sick, especially with vomiting, to seek professional advice.

Qualls’ advice is a bit more specific after almost losing the dog she and her family have become so attached to.

“Don’t buy [magnetic toys]! And if you do, keep them up high and very supervised,” she stressed. “We learned our lesson. We are just happy to have Daisy back.”
