Do you think Emma looks to skinny?

April 7th, 2010 - 10:10 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Skinny Emma Lovers: Almost everyone we run into thinks Emma looks too skinny. She weighs 59 pounds and she eats a cup of kibble with potato mush gravy in the morning and the same thing at night with about 4 slices of raw potato a day.

IMG_6310

She was 10 pounds heavier prior to her back surgery and the vet ordered her to loose 10 pounds, which she did.

Howl much do your hounds eat? And if you don’t mind, howl much do they weigh?

Chaps weighs 69 pounds. He also lost about 8 pounds when he went on Emma’s diet. I should have gone on that same diet.

More wondering if our Emma is always hungry later. Cat, Chaps and Emma

Belle is a “Basset Lite” weighing in at 35 lbs. she eats about 1/2 cup kibble with 3 tablespoons of canned dog food twice a day.
Bailey is a sturdy 63 lbs. She gets just under a cup of kibble with 3 tablespoons of canned dog food twice a day.

They always gets about a dozen treats (puppy or training biscuits) a day.

Emma does have a rather trim waistline (oh, how I envy her!). Biggs has a similar waistline and I often think he’s too skinny (that’s the Italian mother in me, though;)–he weighs in at a buff and muscular 54 lbs. or so. Leo is my big bruiser at 61 pounds of ground round hound who shops in the “husky” department;)–he has to go on the green bean diet periodically to keep him in good form;). Harley is a comfortable and muscular 60 lbs.

They each get one cup of Taste of the Wild kibble, breakfast and dinner, and only organic baby carrots for treats (they have excellent eyesight;). I expect them to lose some poundage, though, as the weather warms up and they can romp and play in the back garden.

Oh, this is making me feel better. I thought I might not be feeding her enough. She goes absolutely bonkers at feeding time.

Mary, you had me rolling. That is so funny. Thanks for that.

Debra – a dozen treats? Emma will be on the next flight out! hehehe

Any dog looks skinny next to Bumper. He holds his own at 70 pounds while Abby sits tight at 42 pounds – can you believe they are cousins. They both eat about 2 cups of lamb and rice at 4:00 – on the nose! They do get numerous small treats too. What is the reason for the raw potato? Just curious!!

Cat, Biggs goes nutso at the merest hint of food as well..I thought maybe we weren’t feeding him enough too–I think he has an overactive metabolism (unlike his mom, more’s the pity;)–so we upped his portion to 1.5 cups in the morning only for about a week. It actually put a pound or two on him and then he was looking “fluffy” all of a sudden I thought, so we cut it right back to his regular cup! Just like us all, I guess he has an optimum weight that suits him quite nicely:)

My hounds get fed once a day between 4:00 and 4:30. Except on weekends when they start crying and whinning earlier.

Jethro is 65 lbs. He gets 1 3/4 cups of low calorie kibble, 1/4 a can of green beans and a tablespoon of wet food.

Rugs is 65 lbs. He gets 2 cups of kibble, 1/4 of a can of green beans and 1/3 of a can of wet food. He’s skinny even though he gets the most because he’s the most active.

Oz is 55 lbs and gets 1 1/2 cups of low calorie kibble and 1/3 of a can of wet food.

Harriet is 45 lbs and gets a heaping cup of kibble and a 1/3 of a cup of wet food.

Everybody gets some kind of topping on their food. A few tablespoons of human leftovers from the night before and if I don’t have that I take one piece of sliced american cheese and break it up in to 8 pieces and give them each 2.

I think Emma looks just perfect. You did what the doctor said and if the doctor thinks she’s the weight she needs to be then I’d keep doing what your doing. Unfortunately she has to stay thinner for her back. You’d never forgive yourself if she got too hefty and hurt her back again.

When I first got Slinky she had been abandoned and weighed 27 lbs. The vet said Slinky was about a year to a year and half years old. I had read that a healthy Basset weighs between 40-60 lbs. When Slinky went to the vet last month she weighed 51 lbs. The vet said that Slinky needed to loose 5 – 6 lbs. When I told the vet that I thought Slinky was at a healthy weight, the vet said it would be better for her and give her a longer life span if she lost some weight. The vet asked me about her diet and I said:

    2 – 2 1/2 cups of kibble a day
3 – 4 treats (this can be Beggin Strips, Bonz, Dog Meat treats, etc.

I also informed the vet that Slinky gets a White Castle plain double-cheeseburger and a few french fries once a week, some Sharp Cheddar Cheese during the week, and a slice or two lunch meat during the week (variety is very important to Slinky).

The vet said “NO MORE PEOPLE FOOD! SHE SHOULD HAVE LESS PROTEIN TREATS!!!”

Now Slinky gets one cup of kibble and 2 – 3 carrots/green beans as treats. We are also going for longer walks.

Next week we go to the vet for a weigh in, I will let you know what Slinky weighs.

Since, Slinky is getting less food, she has become more of a beggar, and quite frequently looks and barks at me to say “Is this all”

This information is absolutely priceless. It is becoming a real resource regarding what bassets eat. Judy, the reason I give raw potatoes is because Emma is severely allergic to protein as well as almost everything that surrounds her. Her dermatologist said that she is even allergic to herself. Now, you have heard it all! I could not believe my ears! She is also allergic to Chaps drool! Just a few days ago when I took her into the newly mowed grass for her birthday picture she turned beat red. Now, after every walk we give her a baking soda with warm water wipe down.

That seems to help. Oh Emmers……….

Oh TREATS! I forgot to mention those! My group gets all the same treats. A small Ol Roy variety pack dog bone in the AM. I know, Ol Roy isn’t good quality but it’s cheap and they only get one a day. Then at night Daddy gives them their favorite “nite, nite” cookie. A doggie chocolate oreo with peanut butter in the middle. They’re made by 3 dog bakery. During the weekend they may get an extra dog bone treat and off an on they pick up something I drop on the floor and they like lettuce and tomato when I’m fixing salad. But we don’t get that many treats that aren’t bad for us.

she looks perfect! thin is better than heavy.

coop & buster get about 1.5 cups of avoderm lamb & brown rice dry food with some freshpet on top each day (once) in the am. for treats they get carrots & some liverwurst. buster gets tomatoes…also some dried liver .

no biscuits if i can help it because they tend to give buster allergies. coop also gets the occasional groundhog. (all natural from the dogpark..oh how special)

I think Emma looks wonderful and with a back history its best to be lighter. Our Sir Henri weights a light 90 pounds, he lost 10 since we got his Thyroid under control and Princess Riley weighs a light 50 pounds. Henri is the larger breed of hound and the Vet thinks he looks good now. You take “Excellent” care of you kids and I think they are Blessed. 🙂

I totally agree with all of the keep her light comments. I was beginning to get a bit freaked out that everyone on our walks tell me she looks skinny!!!! Then they look at Chaps and say he looks fat. I just shake my head. Can you imagine if I said that about someone’s human kid?

Anyway I started second guessing her amount of food.

Now the next big worry are the storms predicted for the evening.

If I had a lot of doe I would build a sound proof room that the kids and I could go into when it thunders. It would be a really cool set up with a huge flatty TV. It would also have a giant sectional couch with all kinds of blankees. Shut the door and the noise. It would probably add years to the Mayors life!

    Poor thing is getting worse.

If it’s not one thing it another……

Rugs and Harriet are scared during storms too. I’ve been told to just ignore them and don’t make a big deal but that’s kind of hard. If I’m busy and they’re following me around that seems to help keep their mind off of things. I shut all the blinds so they can’t see the lightening. They don’t like thunder but when that lightening happens and it gets bright all of a sudden then dark that really scares them. Poor babies!

Bailey weighs 45 Lbs, but he is small for a hound. He eat 1 can of Pedigree a day and I always have dry food availble for him. I worried he was too skinny, but the vet said he is healthy. He also very active.

When I first got Slinky I would keep her gated in the kitchen at night. One night it was storming with a lot of Thunder and Lightening. Slinky started to cry so I brought her into bed with me for a little while(I was only going to keep her in bed for about one hour). I fell asleep and when I awoke in the morning and stumbled to the bathroom in my zombie like state, and I looked in the mirror. I was SHOCKED! HORRIFIED!!! I thought I had contracted some awful disease; but Slinky had chewed open the pillow during the night and the stuffing was all over me.

  17. April 7th, 2010 | 5:28 pm

Our dogs are grazers (one sussex and one basset), so I’m not sure what they eat. They are both a little pudgy, but once it warms up more they’ll get back to their swimsuit bodies!

So glad neither dog at our house is afraid of storms. After the full-out terror our collie would go through with the slightest rumble, it is a relief to have no storm anxiety (well, except mine!). The only thing Sophie (basset) doesn’t like is to have to get her pretty feet wet when it rains.
