Chaps’ storm phobia was getting progressively worse

May 21st, 2010 - 7:07 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Chaps lovers: Well, the Mayor has been getting progressively worse with his loud sounds phobia. The poor thing was suffering terribly.

So I decided to try what my vet has been recommending for a long time. Xanax. My question to my vet was is for me or him? LOL!

We are under all kinds of storm alerts, watching, warnings and more so the Mayor was given his dose. This is his 4th storm on Xanax.

I am pleased to report that the Xanax has taken about 75% of the phobia away.

This picture was just taken a few minutes ago during medium thunder rumblings. Chaps got up from his side of the couch and moved to Emma’s side. (I don’t have a side.) I was sitting on the floor holding my breath. During normal medium thunder rumblings he would have been almost hyperventilating and trying to climb.

I tried everything and then I had to bring in the big guns.

More loving Xanax (for him) later…..Cat, Chaps and Emma

I just saw the storm predictions for Kentucky and came over here to check on the Mayor. Glad to hear the xanax is helping. What strength did the vet put him on? I hope the weather and the Mayor stay calm.

If you think the storm was bad here you should have been in Lebanon – the rain was coming down in buckets. The pool at Steve’s house was overflowing – it must have added about 5 inches to the pool. Thanks for coming to Paige’s funeral. This was the hardest week of my life – no one should lose a 6 year old grandaughter.

Hi Judy! I wanted to ask you before I said anything to the residents about your dear Paige. I am so glad you added this comment. I would love add a bit more to the blog. Her pictures are just beautiful.

I just don’t know how the human heart can take that much pain.

    Paige’s Mass was beautiful.

I was thinking about you guys on my way home from the cemetery with all of the rain.

    (((((((Judy)))))))))

    Love you

nothing wrong with a little chemical help for the mayor..if thats what it helps to keep him calm & safe then so be it…

a severely stressed dog can get into so much trouble..sofalofa..all 129 lbs of her jumped a 7′ fence and got lost for 3 days because of a storm..on a busy road & an active navy base with a train track that hauls weapons & doesn’t usually look for a dark black dog at night…so drugs are a good thing..if they work!

sometimes heavy rains are god’s way of adding to tears to a families loss…just to let them know that he knows and hears their prayers…

Poor Chaps. But I’m so glad to hear that you’ve finally found something that works. It looks like laying by Emma helps a lot too. I don’t think Rugs and Harriet are bad enough to need drugs but I do worry about them and what happens when I’m not here. I’m sure they come in their bedroom for cover. I always leave their blinds shut when I know it’s going to rain.

    Judy,
I cannot imagine your pain. Paige was a very beautiful girl. Our hearts go out to you.

Kerry, the vet put him on 2mg every 8 to 12 hours. So, far I have not had to give him more than 1 at a time and then the event is over. So, the Mayor’s suffering if over due to storms and loud noises. By loud noises I me the jack hammer that is directly across the street from his worry bed. Oh dear me. I might be flipping my wig if they continue that next week.

2mg? Wow – I’d sleep through an 8.0 earthquake! Glad it helped and your exhaustion related to storms has come to an end.

Kerry, Maybe I read it wrong, but my vet said that dogs process drugs differently. My Pharmacy actually thought it was a lot as well. I tried him on half a does first and it did not even budge him!

Slinky gets anxious with storms and fireworks, I have to cuddle with her to keep her from getting too upset.

I hate to point this out to you, but not only do you not have a side on the sofa. You don’t have any of the sofa.
