53 years old! I look back on the best birthday present of my life!
Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and best birthday present of my life wanting to know lovers! LOL! Oh, heck, just indulge me, OK?
It went down like this. My Dad and I went out for a drive to talk about driving. I was so UGH….
I am 16 years old and I have to listen to my DAD about driving!!! He was like all serious and stern. UGH……Come on! It’s my birthday….I have been waiting for 16 all of my L I F E!!!!!
I was staring at my hands when I heard the emergency break on the VW bus go on. I looked up and saw we were at the VW dealership. I just figured we were getting the bus looked out.
We both got out of the car. “Why am I here, today, on my 16th birthday?”
As we turned the corner all of the new bugs were on the lot.
My Dad said, “You can have any car you want on this lot!”
I looked at my Dad and within 15 seconds, like I was on beat the clock, I said,
“I want that one!”
Dad just laughed and said,
“Don’t you want to look at the Karmann Ghias?”
“NO, THIS IS MY CAR!”
So, he paid in cash and had the best stereo system installed. I was no longer staring at my hands they were firmly wrapped around my Dad’s neck! I was like, “I have the grooviest DAD on the planet!” Talk about your sweet 16!
A few days later we picked up VeeWee (her name and my car for 18 years) my Mom was with us. While we were waiting for VeeWee to pull out we walked over to the bug lot. Dad looked at my Mom and said. “Go ahead Mom, you can pick out any car you want on the lot!”
Wow! howl cool was my Daddy?
She went for the bright yellow bug! We parked our 2 jewels in front of our house. I don’t think I got a wink of sleep that night!
Here are some more pictures of my VeeWee. I hope you care to indulge me some more! heheveeeeweveeeewe!
I cannot believe I did not wash the paint right off my beloved car. That is me with the bucket! My lil’ sis with the hose and a friend in the car!
Then VeeWee took my lil’ sis and I to University of Kentucky.
The best of times!
Then VeeWee went with me to my first ever Condo! 10 years later. I loved taking pictures of her!
OMG! Wanna see a boyfriend I had in the 80s? He was holding one of my Nikons. At the time I thought he was so cute! I guess he still is. He is wearing my shirt. Wonder what he is doing now? I guess I could check facebook. LOL!
So you can see how VeeWee stayed with me over the years.
Thank you Grandpa, for the best birthday present I ever got! The memories make it even better!
More VeeWeeeeeeeeeeee memories later. Love Cat.
P.S. I want to buy another VeeWee someday and have the Mayor and Emma’s ears flying in the breeze!
What was your first car? Just wondering?
VeeWee? Lets not mispronounce that to WeeWee. Ha! Too funny! And too much fun! A 16 year old girls dream. I cannot imagine being told I could have any car in the parking lot! Wow. My Mom and Dad gave me $3,000 that they said was an early graduation gift because the family car I had inherited to drive to work broke down for good. I bought a 1979 bright blue Camaro. I got my first loan at 17 years old and had to pay back $3,800 at $105.00 a month for 36 months. I paid it off early! I was so proud.
Isn’t your birthday on the 15th? Or was it today? Either way, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
What a great car–not to mention a GREAT DAD. BTW–your boyfriend looks sooooo Duran Duran!!!
Oh my – how much alike are we! We are from the same town, my dad also got me a beetle new in 1967 and it was light blue. His name was “little fellow”. I got him the summer after I turned 16 because we only had one car and my mom needed it sometimes too. After I got married my little brother got him and wrecked him in Campbell County Park. I now have a “new beetle” my double yellow pride and joy. I just love my car.
Candy – he was totally Duran, Duran! He actually gave me a tape of BOY by U2 and I melted.
Judy! We love our bugs! OMG, little fellow! I love it!
I also know howl much you love your Yellow Bug! Bumper owns that front seat! hehehe Weeeeeeee
Cindy, yes the 15th is my bday! I wonder howl much the VeeeWeee was? back in 74 I think.
I guess you could say I was bug less:0 My Dad gave me a ’63 Buick Skylark. It was a fun car, should have kept it, its worth money now. da…
Love the memories you share Cat, your Dad was a One in A Million kind of Dads. hmmm makes me home sick, maybe I should get to ole Montana this year yet:)
I remember the cost of my 1967 bug was $1700.00 brand new – I also remember the big debate on the sunroof because it was $75.00 more. We did get the sunroof and I found the original receipt that he paid cash for when he passed away 7 years ago. He never threw anything away. What memories.
Judy, that is too funny. The big debate over the sunroof! I wonder if I will find the original receipt some day for VeeWee…..

Didn’t exactly own a VW bug … But when I was 20 and six months pregnant with my son, we toured Switzerland with another couple who owed one. They bought a HUGE CooKoo clock which was also put in the back seat. Now I know the answer to the age old question “How many pregnant ladies can you fit in a VW? ONE!!!! Oh the memories you stir up Cat!
What a great story and what an awesome Dad! Happy belated birthday! My Dad helped me buy a 68 mustang convertable when I was 15 and we had it fixed up just in time for my 16th birthday. Sadly, someone smashed into me days after my 18th birthday and totaled it. I purchased a 67 mustang vert a few years ago, same color too. Another blue convertable like your Bug!
What a super groovy Dad!
Happy Birthday Cat !!!!!!!!!
We Love You !!

How COOL was your dad!!!?? In the 1960’s my two brothers always had bugs and I adore them–someday I would love to have an old convertible bug. I was the only person in my high school who simply couldn’t handle driver’s ed at 16 so I didn’t get my license until I was 19! My boyfriend taught me to drive on a light blue ’67 bug:) My own first car was a 1979 Honda Civic that I loved. I sold it in the mid 1980’s for a 1978 red Karmann Ghia which was possessed, I think;) I caught some kids trying to steal the radio, it had a car fire in the dash which made the horn short out and honk all the time;) It had heat in the summer and none in the winter–I had to use De-Icer on the inside while driving! It died on me all the time, usually in the middle of rush hour traffic, and once a huge tree limb shattered the entire back window..It really needed an exorcism! I’d love to have another one of them someday though {sigh}…

That is so cool Cat. OMG what County does that OHIO Tag say? You got to tell me? Please.
Boyd it was either Hamilton or Butler. I can’t remember. I lived in Fairfield OH at that time.
I love all of your first car stories. What a treat on my birthday!
We were not able to take our trip today because of Chaps. He got really sick today throwing up and himz had die-a-real.
That’s what we call it. I was saying, “Himz don’t feel real”…….
He is resting next to me now and his GI problems are settling down.

HA! We call it Die-a-rear!
I have always wanted a convertible just once in my life, I envy you.
The first car I owned was a used 4 door light blue Torino I think it was a 1978/79. I always wanted Mustang, Camaro or Trans Am, but my Dad would find some honey of a used car and that would be it. I wanted to raise the rear wheels and paint some racing stripes on it, to jazz it up, but he just shook his head.
While they were down in Florida on vacation for about a month, I took my Torino to a dirt road and floored it. I got the car up to 94 miles an hour and I threw a rod. I had to walk about 3 miles to a service station, get a tow truck, rent a car; and because I was so afraid of my parents finding out I paid for the tow (everything in cash). I had to use half of the money I was saving to go on a trip to Mexico.
Also, I was quite angry that I couldn’t get the car to go over 100 miles per hour (the speedometer went upto 120), so I wrote Ralph Nadar a strong firm letter about it suggesting consumer fraud.
Maureen – you had me ROFLMAO! That was too funny! What a story. I would have love the jacked up rear end. Who knew you had a thing for muscle cars! I thought they were pretty cool my dang self!
Cat
Happy belated birthday Cat!! We <3 u!!!!!
