Tuna fish sandwiches and a tank of gas:)

August 7th, 2010 - 8:08 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and road trip lovers….

This morning we were blessed with an abnormally nice August day. We are a pack that can take advantage of a nice day on a moments notice and take advantage we did! Grandma whipped up the tuna fish sandwiches and I tanked up the basset hauling vehicle! We headed out to one of our favorite parks (AJ Jolly) which is out route 27 and becomes important later….

We wanted to check out the camp ground and found our almost perfect spot to dine!

This is an actual campsite. You can see the next site over where the picnic table is. It is really cool. We loved it! I kept thinking that it would be so cool for a group of basset lovers and campers to spend a weekend here! I say almost perfect because I found the perfect camp site.

See it right behind Grandma. It is PERFECT! The ideal setting. Wouldn’t it be cool to get a bunch of these small campsites and have a basset hound hootenanny? They are all cloistered pretty close and in this particular area one of the sparse bathrooms is pretty close. I felt like someone staking out our claim! hehehehe

Then we pressed on via route 27 South. Remember I said this would make a difference later? Well, we quickly discovered we were on the route of the longest yard sale in the world. It happens every year but neither of us have ever been on it. Here is a map I found on line.

WLY map 2001

Check out the very tip of Northern KY, that is where we live and where the longest yard sale in the world starts. It is about 10 minutes from my home. We were excited to travel for a few hours and do some shopping but the pickins’ were slim and the travel was slow!

It is tobacco harvesting time in Kentucky and the air is thick with the smell. Nice to have this guy turn right!

We were on the hunt to find a place to pull over and take a walk. Like a small city park. We just could not find one. Since we had the kids we really did not want to get out for a yard sale card table on the side of road selling plastic baby toys or rusted shovels. So we turned around to head home.

We may not have stumbled upon a yard sale find but we stumbled upon a real estate find! I was traveling the speed limit with a big black pick-up truck barreling on my butt as I glanced to the right and saw the for sale sign in the front of an aging Cynthiana, KY estate/farm. I let the too much in a hurry black pick-up truck pass me. As the truck roared passed I had to laugh at the larger than life decal on the back window complete with a gun rack. It said, “SPOILED ROTTEN”! Where do I get me one of those decals? hehehe

I turned around. I had to go back to the aging estate. The kids had to tinkle!

It looked like the perfect spot to stop and a place to walk the kids and get them some water.

It was really run down with an old broken down 70s Mercedes parked in the side yard. It was kind of spooky. You could tell that in its day someone was very proud of it. The eves were broken and the roof looked like it would leak. We saw a huge crack in the outside molding. The paint around the windows was flaking off in sheets. The landscaping was trying to grow up into the windows. There was even an open window on the second floor. It was really sad.

This next picture was taken from me just turning around. Look at that driveway. That is the BHV at the end.

IMG_8567

The driveway was gravel and the pillars at the entrance way were falling over.

This is your side yard.

Interesting indeed! I felt sorry for the old place as we pulled out. I wondered about who loved it at one time. I wondered howl much it was listed for.

The kids slept the entire way home…..

More tuna fish sandwiches and a tank of gas later….Love, Cat, Grandma, Chaps and Emma

PS – BREAKING NEWS! I JUST GOOGLED THIS PLACE! HOWL CAN OUR EVALUATION BE SO OFF?

LISTING FOR OLD KY ESTATE

Make sure you look at all of the pictures. WHAT? The price floored us! My Mom and I thought it would be a tear down from looking at the outside. We guessed 150,00 for the place.

I had to crack up at our description and then the real estate person’s description. I love that I did not look at hers before I did this blog.

This place is definitely not a yard sale find! hehehehe

    “national historic register”
key words…expensive repairs…if i’m not mistaken repairs must be done to keep building within the historical intergity of the era & structure…nice but a nightmare.

they are asking that because they can get that…someone will pay that restore it & then resell it for 2x as much after they turn in into a fancy schmancy b & b restored back to the civil war..

it will be a beautiful estate once fixed & restored but a money pit to do so…you have to meet current code & restoration requirements
that is the problem with older buildings and restorations…once they are designated you can’t just go in willy nilly & fix…

but oh the tuna sammies make the trip perfect…it would be great to get everyone together for a big outing one day..i finally got to get pix of an old stone house en route to the farmers market that i have passed all summer…no sammies but plenty of fun. buster & sally dressed as “the situation” and “snooki” from jersey shore..that silly show..and were a big hit today. one very interested potential adopter, lots of $$$ and buster pretty much downed an entire HUGE bunch of carrots himself.

a good day was had by all.

A house is worth what ever someone is willing to pay for it. I feel that $600,000 is a bit much but the pictures are impressive. I know the problems we have with our 100 year old house so I cannot imagine what problems lurk in one 140 years old. I think a basset hound picnic would be great as would a walk in the park on a “cool” fall day – see you then! We can bring tuna sandwiches too – treats for all the kids. Abby is doing well – only 2 more days of pain meds and she will be good to go!

Judy, you should have seen the outside. It was almost in blight state. The eves were falling down and we saw a hole in the roof. It was so sad. I could not believe the pics of the inside. The home seemed abandoned, almost spooky. I bet it has been on the market for years. You could tell from the over growth trying to weave it’s way into the windows. This place is worth 90K at best and then it would be a tear down. The leaks would produce mold. We saw huge gaps in the roof. The home was proud in it’s day. It was so sad howl they had that junker Mercedes parked in the side yard.

I did love it. I felt sorry for it. I wonder who had it way back when????

Cat, I looked the William S. Haviland house and found this! It is a shame it is so run down:( I love old houses (I live in a 200 year old one myself:)

Mary – it makes all of the residents feel that we were all on the tuna fish tour together!

How interesting! I loved reading a little history about that old house. And tuna sandwiches sounds wonderful to me. Yes, some day Basset Hound Town needs to meet up.

I’ve just read this blog post. I was going to make tuna patties for supper, but tuna sandwiches it is. Honey and I need to pretend we were on the tour with the Bassethound Town Mayor Chaps and his beautiful companion, Emma.

By the way, I looked up that Geothermal HVAC in the real estate listing. Sounded interesting, but did they really put that in the house? It is a newer type of heating/cooling setup and costs more than conventional to install. It also doesn’t have a track record. Plus its usefulness depends on geology of the site, I think.

Cat, I would love to be able to join a BHT campout. Now I just need a real job ( not my WalMart job) and a Basset Hound 🙂

It would be wonderful to be able to afford to restore this old place. I can just see all the Masterpieces running around! I think the front porch needs two cement basset hound statues, one on either side……..The views are beautiful.

I hate to see such a lovely home fall on hard times. It would take a lot of care and money to bring it back to what it once was. As for the price, my 2 bedroom condo was appraised two years ago for $135,000. I love the staircase, and the idea of walk-in closets, but it would be out of my price range and I think you couldn’t kick the tires too much because of the acreage involved.
