The Mayor is not feeling too well:(

December 9th, 2010 - 10:10 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and concerned about the Mayor Lovers. I thought I would relate what is happening and he appears to be a bit better from this morning. My sister, the doctor, most likely has diagnosed his problem but I want to tell you the story first. It might help someone.

I knew something was wrong at about 4:30am when he got out of bed and laid on the floor. He never does that.

So this morning I immediately knew something was wrong. He just stood and stared at the wall. He actually seemed scared. The good news is, is that he ate and went potty.

But then things took a slight turn and Chaps appeared to be more scared of Grandma and myself. It was heart breaking. As we came towards him he would back away.

I was thinking that he might have had a seizure or could it be sudden onset of dementia?

I am so freaked out. I don’t take these things very well. Again, he seems to be doing a bit better right now.

So, I had to go out for a few hours and Grandma sat with the kids. I called her about 5 times.

It took him about an hour to walk down the hall and get into his bed.

You can see on his face that he is confused.

I got home and my sister called. This is the sister in Atlanta that is a GI doctor. She is sooooo smart so we told her all about his symptoms. Of course she asked about his medications and he is on 2. Remember I took him in for conjunctivitis on Thursday? Well, after she heard what he was on she was concerned that both medications contained Gentamicin. She immediately thought that he could have mild Gentamicin toxicity. She knows howl delicate Chaps is. This is a part of what is on the wikipedia site.

Side effects

Side effects of gentamicin toxicity vary from patient to patient. Side effects may become apparent shortly after or up to months after gentamicin is administered. Symptoms of gentamicin toxicity include:

  • Balance difficulty
  • Bouncing, unsteady vision
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Difficulty multi-tasking, particularly when standing

She said, for example, if Chaps is seeing like this…

blur

He would be definitely scared and back up if you are coming towards him and he sees you and Grandma as a blur. Dr. Rudert also said that mild Gentamician toxicity can cause some mild hearing loss.

I am so hopeful that this wears off……

So is Emma!

I will keep all of the residents posted. Himz seems a bit better tonight but still confused.

I am so upset that he may have this mild toxic reaction.

More loving Dr. Rudert later…..Cat, Chaps and Emma

Oh no !! We are all hoping that this is something that will pass soon. It is so heartbreaking when something happens to one of the kids and there is nothing you can do about it. They are so helpless and depend on us so much. Keep us posted and I will check in tomorrow morning.

please…updates..we want updates…sounds like that…never dull with hounds thats for sure!

big excitement here was that sally fell off the bed & got herself trapped between the bed & the wall (ok there is about 15″ of space between the two)…nothing has changed since she got here…& i had to rescue her after some time since she couldn’t figure out how to extract her self…hello..ya couldn’t slither under the bed like yer brother? or here’s a thought hop back onto the bed???

at least the mayor had a good excuse for being confused…sally…i swear her theme song is …”if i only had a brain!”

anyway…hoping he feels better soon & miss emma takes good care of him & you too!

Cat, I have darling Chaps in my prayers to St. Francis. I am looking forward to hearing that this is just a temporary reaction to his meds. Lots of love and hugs from

Hope the Chaps is feeling better soon.We love ya big guy. The doc is probably right about toxicity. That can happen with an array of drugs in combination with the same ingredients. Let us know how he is doing. XXXXXXXXXXXXXX OOOOOOOOOOOO

Fingers crossed he gets better soon.

Could there be any lasting effects? I have a Basset Hound too (Izzie). They can look like tanks, like nothing would phase them, but underneath they can indeed be quite delicate.

David – My sister thinks there will be no lasting effects do to the mild nature of the toxic reaction. He seems right back to 100%. Thanks so much for your comments. I agree about our delicate hounds!

    Have a nice weekend….

He should be back to his ol self within 24-48 hours sweetie. Hope all is well. Gentamycin toxicity is certainly more severe in renal insufficiency however you told me that recent labs were normal. I doubt that they actually calculated renal function with a glomerular filtration rate. That is calculated in some routine noncanine (human!!!) labwwork.
    I love you
