I swear to Dog I think Chaps can feel earthquakes!

March 11th, 2011 - 11:11 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and wondering about Chaps and his Earthquake feeling vibes lovers.

OK, Chaps has acted this way before when another earthquake hit. He get restless, moves around a lot, and finally gets up and acts like he is not sure of something.

He sits by the side of the bed and looks like this.

Chaps never gets out of bed unless it is storming. So, it concerned me slightly.

I looked at the clock and it was 2:47am. The exact time that the earthquake hit Japan, if I calculated correctly. Of course I did not know that then. I thought maybe he felt a storm coming. Even though it was snowing when we went to bed, ya never know. So I got up, grabbed my camera just in case I had to do some :00 dark hundred product reporting on the Thundershirt.

I turned on the TV and WHAMO! An 8.9 earthquake had hit Japan.

japan

Turning on the TV time was was at 2:51am. Just then, a stack of tupperwear tubs that I have had stacked in my basement since Christmas fell over and make a sound that sent Chaps and I both running. Emma, continued her beauty sleepy.

Do you think it is possible that we felt a small tremor all the way in Bassethoundtown, the KY section? It all seemed very non-coensidental to me?!?

Very interesting indeed…

My heart goes out to the people of Japan and anyone affected by this event. It must be horrifyingly scary to go through something like this. I was frightened just by those tubs falling over.

More wondering about the Mayor and his higher powers later……Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma

I think Chaps is so sensitive, he must have felt or sensed something.

I heard a little about the quake, but I didn’t realize it was an 8.9 WOW!

This morning I woke up when my dog jumped off my bed and crawled underneath it. He always hides under the bed when there’s a storm coming but it was clear and sunny here in Norway so I was a bit puzzled. He came out after a couple of minutes and I went back to sleep. Later that morning when I turned the radio on I realized this happened just around when the earthquake hit! I don’t know whether it was a coincidence – we’re so far away – but the quake was measurable here – they said on the news people couldn’t feel it here – but maybe animals can? (I found your post here by googling “dog feels earthquakes”)

Kat! Wow, I was wondering howl you find my blog posting. That is really something. I bet animals have a much better sense of earthly events than we do.

Thank you so much for reporting your findings about your dog. Very interesting.

That is just too coincidental to happen twice Cat. Just makes me wonder that if he’s that sensative to things that far away then what do storms do to him right there in BHT! Poor Chaps. He’s so lucky he has you.

    Mine slept right through!

Yes, the same thing happened to me this morning, neigbors dogs started barking and going crazy. Woke me up, and minutes later all over the news about the quake. They rarely bark, and I am convinced they new! Look me up on Facebook if anyone else has had the experience with animals and this quake. tneptune1@gmail.com

That is so weird because I woke up to the BIG white dog across the street barking and it was not yet 3a.m. I did not think about that until now! Bumper and Abby were sound asleep in their beds with their blankets. When do the kids go to Dirty Hairy’s for their bath? Let us know howl that works out.

Judy – We have not gone to Dirty Hairy’s yet. I did call that girl and she seems very sweet. We hope to go next week. I cannot wait. For everyone else reading, Dirty Hairy’s is a do it yourself dog bathing place. I am so excited!

Chaps is so sensitive and I know he felt it.

Cindy – I know what you mean. Chaps FREAKS OUT with storms and I am scared he is going to pass out. I just think he has special gifts that I will never ever know the extent of. (sadly)

I have a peculiar sensitivity to earthquakes, even if they aren’t nearby. I woke up at 12:30AM 3/11 in Chicago after going to bed at 11:30pm. I had a weird feeling something was amiss, as I normally don’t wake up an hour after going to bed. The earthquake in Japan hit at 11:45pm Chicago time, so you may say, “well the timing isn’t right”. But if you look at the seismographs in Illinois, they started reacting at 12:30AM as it takes about 45 minutes for the seismic waves to propagate that far. This has happened to me a few times, but I seem to be more sensitive when sleeping. In 2001, I woke up up in the middle of the night (in a high rise apartment, and probably much more sensitive to movement) again in Chicago, wondering what was wrong. The next morning I saw that San Francisco had an earthquake, and the time that I woke up was directly related when seismic waves had reached Chicago from SF. Given that its not at the exact time, but rather delayed, I think the sensitivity is to the seismic wave phenomenon, and nothing deeper than that. Creeps me out.

and I look back to see that this is a basset hound website. My previous post may seem a little out of context, so let me just say… I LOVE Basset Hounds!

Hey Ron – your comment is not out of context at all. I find all of this very interesting. My basset hound is Chaps and he is very sensitive to the environment. He has actually reacted this way before that I have noticed. I am going to keep a much better eye on all of this.

Here is the link to the first time I noticed Chaps earthquake behavior.
