OH NO! The Thundershirt did not work!
Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Thundershirt wondering lovers! We just had a mini thunderstorm move in and then move out! I whipped out the Thundershirt and plastered it on the Mayor.
It did not work. I would give it about a 3% edge on the Mayors thunderstorm fears. There was no time for pictures. He did look really cute. This is a picture from the day we receive the Thundershirt.
I am not giving up on the Thundershirt just yet.
I am so upset, but I am not surprised. He cannot even calm down with Xanax. I guess cases like Chaps are so severe there is no hope. I hate saying that…
More hoping later… Cat, Chaps and Emma
maybe it is one of those things that needs to be put on in a calm manner (not saying that you were not calm, but…)..if in a rush you were stressed & he fed off of you & then things snowballed…
sometimes no matter how much meds, etc you offer once the process has started it would take a ton of something to derail it. i wouldn’t chuck the thundershirt yet…
i know with cooper if i ran around trying to sound proof things during a storm for him it just made it worse but if i went calmly about then he was still a wreck but a somewhat calmer one.
thankfully no one here now seems to really care to much about storms…after cooper’s stress i was worn out!
Poor Chaps. I really hate this for him and you. I’m very lucky that the 2 that I have that are scared aren’t as bad as Chaps. I wish I had some ideas on what would help, but I don’t. Too bad you can’t make your house sound proof from thunder huh? I know it’s the lightening and thunder that really gets mine. If it’s just raining they’re ok. As long as he has his Mommy near by I think he’ll be ok.
Lois – I agree. I was pretty stressed out. I am not finished with the TS yet. I would say it helped about 3.4%. Maybe he will need both the meds and the TS.
Yep, it is kind of a nightmare. I wonder if I could make a kennel sound proof? I have a giant kennel he was transported in from TX. I don’t use it anymore, but I was thinking when I get my mini RV I will have to put them in a secure spot. Anyway, I digress. I will google it!
Friends with a border collie that is terrified of storms. The only thing that calms her is to get in the backseat of their car in the garage. Nobody has to stay with her, she just feels much safer in that. The smaller confinement in the car might be the same thing the kennel might give to Chaps. Poor Mayor. Our collie was so terrified of storms … even a raindrop would cause her worry. Those were long nights. Fortunately, Nell and Sophie are not storm worriers.
I just found out (after 6 years) that if I give my basset a treat every time it thunders and talk to him in a really excited voice he forgets about the storm. (pretty much the same experiment as Pavlov with classic conditioning)
