Teeth cleaning and hard questions……?
Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and teeth cleaning lovers????
Well, we all know we don’t love it but our teeth do!
So, what are the hard questions? No, it’s not, “Are you flossing every day?”
It was a question from my technician, “How old is Chaps now?”
I answered, “Awahesz hen” (Ah, he is 10)
It’s funny howl these technicians understand you with their hands and instruments in your mouth.
Then she asked, “How long do bassets hounds typically live?”
I hesitated, my teeth aching and my heart in my throat, and said, “Nawught oning anuffuff”. (Not long enough)
Somehow she understood and agreed.
I took a break to “Swish” and think about it. At that point I had an epiphany. I looked at Ruthie, my technician, and said, “You know what? I am 53 years old and I don’t think the average dog has lived much longer than my french poodle did who died at age 13, when I was 10.”
Another question. Over the past 50 years why have dogs not really improved in their life span? Am I wrong to think this? What do you think? All of the dogs I have had, have passed at between 8 and 13. Well, Lily was an anomaly. We had no idea howl old she was.
I came home and saw this face, totally gray and 10 years old..
I said, “hohlow bowey uveshee lober wold”. (Hi low boy of the shining lover world:)
He understood every word! LOL
More loving old boys later…Cat, Chaps and Emma
I never used to floss and only brushed my teeth once a day until this new hygenist told me that it would be $550 to medicate my “deep pockets”. Say what?! And that’s AFTER insurance! Well, I refused that service and asked if there was something I could do to take care of the problem myself. She didn’t like the idea that I wasn’t going to spend the money but told me I needed to floss. That’s when I started flossing and brushing twice a day and rinsing with antiseptic mouth wash and every thing else I could get my hands on. They got better within a few months and I saved $550.
Dentists are not in the business of saving you money! I remember the days of yore and having dental insurance…..good times
I don’t know if my boy Duncan would have lived any longer than his pampered 14 years, but I firmly believe that he was more comfortable the last 2 years of his life with the interduction of glutocosomine pills in his food.
My current houndie Belle is 13 and she is still doing great. Her hips are a bit stiff. We normally go out for a mile and a half walk every evening–rain, snow, sleet-just like the postman! Sometimes she doesn’t feel up to walking that far and we turn around, but on average she completes the entire walk five of the seven days a week.
I hear ya Debra! I am going to start Chaps on some of what his Aunt Sandy has suggested. I am going to do a blog on her very detailed message to me about what to put Chaps on. It was sooooooo informative.
I try and floss about once a week. I guess I am just lazy.
I met a Basset at my vet’s office about a year or two ago, his name was Andy and he was 16 years old. That is the oldest Basset I ever heard of.
I know if will be terrible for me to cope when its Slinky time to go to the bridge.
I hear ya Maureen.
You need to get another basset Maureen. When Slinky goes it’ll still be very hard but you’ll have one to cuddle while you cry.
Cindy,
I wish I could get another Basset, but my condo association has a rule “one pet per unit”.
By the way, is there some kind Basset Hound walk in Basset Hound Town this month? Are you coming?
Maureen,
We were going to try and make it but it’s not going to work out. One of Ronald’s co workers had knee surgery and he can’t take off. We’ll have to plan on meeting with everyone the next time. Y’all have fun!
I totally agree. I am of the ilk that I must have a basset in my life at all times.
Maureen – It did kind of fall apart. I will be having a walk this spring but that date did not work out for a number of reasons. I will keep you posted on the progress of the next walk. I need to e-mail Judy and get her on board. She is my co-planner.
More later….
OKAY!
