Meet Big Barney, the hopeful homeless hound in Hardinsville, KY:)

March 28th, 2012 - 9:09 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Homeless Hound Lovers….All signs are pointing towards Big Barney being just fine.

Yesterday I was contacted by my friend and fellow basset hound rescuer, Helena.  LOVE HER!

She told me about Barney and wanted me to check him out.

Barney

Check him out I did.  I called the shelter as soon as it opened and talked to Tommy the Animal Control Officer.  What a wonderful man.  We had such a nice chat.  He said that he would not let anything bad happen to Big Barney and was in fact networking him, himself!

Tommy picks dogs to showcase to the little local paper and had Big Barney on the list to be featured.  The newspaper lady was coming today.

Tommy also told me that if Big Barney does not find his owner he has a woman who was interested in pulling him.  If that woman does not pull him, he has a rescue interested in himz.

Tommy also told me that normally he has no problem placing bassets….because, he said…..”Just look at their faces”.  That was so sweet.  I even welled up a bit.  What a nice man.

More loving Tommy and Big Barney later….Cat, Chaps and Emma

P.S. I asked Tommy if it was OK to check back on Tuesday and he said, “Barney would like that”.

Facebook find of the day – “Sleeping arrangements”;)

March 28th, 2012 - 10:10 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Sleeping Arrangement Lovers…..I found this on face book and I am just not sure who to give credit to.  Again, it was in a different language and passed around through my Italian “friends”.  Anyway, glad to see that hounds hog the bed in Italy as well as the good ole USA!

Choking basset hound saves its own life by dialing 999

March 27th, 2012 - 11:11 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and very scary story lovers (has a good ending)…

911-1

Clever canine … George the Basset Hound dialed 999

COPS who raced to a house after hearing desperate heavy breathing during an emergency call found a DOG had rung 999 while strangling itself with the telephone wire.

George, the two-year-old Basset Hound, had knocked the phone to the floor and got entangled in the wire — winding it round his neck.

And he panicked so much he incredibly managed to ring 999 as he pawed at the phone trying to free himself.

The emergency operator alerted police who dashed to the empty home of driving instructor Steve Brown and his daughter Lydia, 18 on Saturday night.

They were preparing to smash down the door when a family friend from a nearby house ran out with a key to let them in.

Four officers sprinted through the house in South Hiendley, West Yorkshire, searching the rooms.

911-2

Pals … George and owner Lydia

And then neighbour Paul Walker walked into the living room and found terrified George choking — with the phone lead wound tightly round his neck.

Paul, 41, ripped the phone apart to wrench the wire from George’s throat.

He said: “The police split up and ran through the house thinking someone had either been attacked or was desperately ill.

“I went to look round as well and walked into this room and saw George choking.

“He was absolutely terrified and could not free himself.

“I knew I had to get him free quickly so I just ripped the wire out.

“Incredibly you could see where his paw print was on the phone to ring 999 — he literally saved his own life.

“When the police came into the room and realised what had happened they burst out laughing.

“They told me they had been sent out because of a 999 call in which the operator could only hear heavy breathing and gasping.

“They thought someone had collapsed or been attacked.”

911-3

Lucky escape … George managed to paw the emergency number

Paul had been left a key by college student Lydia to feed George later in the evening while she went out to do an evening shift as a waitress.

Lydia said: “By the time I got back the police had gone and George was looking a little sorry for himself.

“It is just so lucky that his paw managed to ring 999 otherwise he would have died.

“We still don’t know how he managed it.

“It’s one of those old-fashioned phones with the dialling ring.

“He’s not usually very smart.

“He’s really dopey and just likes to chew socks.”

End of Story from the THE SUN – UK

Well I am sure this will go viral in the basset hound community.  It will show up everywhere from facebook, twitter, Daily Drool, and back again.  You can say you saw it hear first!

More reporting breaking news as it breaks…..

Love you George and stay away from the old time phone.  Mommy needs an IPhone!

Youtube find of the day!

March 26th, 2012 - 8:08 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and YouTube find of the day lovers….

OMDawg!  I am finding it increasingly harder and harder to find a fun YouTube for the residents.  Just now, I went over and YT is saturated with people trying to sell puppies.  That just makes me so sad.  YT used to be a fun place to laugh and enjoy and now it appears to be turning into puppy sales.  I will keep looking and keep reporting but for now, please enjoy an older YT of Chaps and Emma from 2006.

Oh sugar don’t you cry……

Well, it’s that time of the year again!

March 24th, 2012 - 12:12 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Cherry Tree Lovers.  This year, from what I hear, all of the cherry trees are blooming early…ours is no exception.  Also, every year Grandma and I get out there with our Emma and do a birthday girl photo shoot.  We better do it soon, like within hours, or else all of the blossoms will be gone.  We had a crashing down pour last night and they are mostly on the ground.  We have never missed a year so, maybe we will do it tomorrow.  I was looking at a few photo shoots from years back and stumbled upon this picture when Emma still had sight in one eye.

Just adorable.

I can’t wait for this years shoot.

Lists, lists, and more lists…my life is a list;)

March 21st, 2012 - 8:08 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Life List Lovers….Can you imagine if you kept all of the lists you wrote out?  All the line items you have for yourself to do.  Wow, that would be some kind of compilation.

Well, a major item on my list, for years, was to have 2 gates installed in the back yard for the kids.

Here is the view from the second floor of our home. That is Wade, Chaps and I looking at one of the gates.  Wade is very familiar with my lists.  He walks around our home with my lists tucked in his pocket.  He loves crossing things off the list.

photo 1_2

These gates are needed because the kids love to climb to the highest level and totter to the point of shear panic on my part.

Here they come to check out the gates that Wade installed for them.

photo 5

Emma goes right to the gate that will block her from climbing.  Can you believe she still wants to climb?  She really has no fear.  And now her Mom and Grandma don’t either!

We never let them up there alone but it was always a battle.  Climb, climb, climb…..

photo 3

Now the Kids can explore the lower level and enjoy the birds, smells and the wonder of spring.

Look, Emma still wants up on that next level.  Thank goodness her legs are too short.

photo 4

Then it was pure magic.  Emma laid down in the cool moss and let out a huge sigh.  It was so cute and sweet.

photo 2

The Mayor was having a big, big time.  We all sat up on the first level for a nice long while.  I closed my eyes.  I wanted to feel what Shimlette was feeling.  Those birds were so loud.  I could smell Spring.

photo 4

Grandma and Chaps are down by the the other gate now.

photo 1_2

One of the cutest things of the day was our very own Mayor.  After we all went inside I started looking for Chaps.  I found him laying where I normally close the entrance gate.  It was if he was saying “Thank You Mommy”.

Wow – one item on one list can really improve a few lives.

Just an open gate is all it takes.
