Our Emma took a turn for the worse:(

June 9th, 2012 - 6:06 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Emma Lovers…Our Emma took a pretty sharp turn for the worse yesterday.  Our unregistered nurse opinion is this must be related to the Chinese Herbs.  Emma only had 2 pills in her when she became lethargic, pale, not eating, and more.  I was up all night with her and neither one of us slept very much.  Just a few cat naps. We all know howl allergic Emma is to EVERYTHING!  It does not surprise me in the least that she would be allergic to the herbs.

Emma ate some melba toast today, drank a lot of water and got out to go tinkle on her own.  She is sleeping almost non stop.  Grandma (her other unregistered nurse) and I agree that she is very calm and not in any pain.

The herbs is our guess, but it could just be the liver disease catching up with her.

It is very scary and sad but our Emma needs us to be strong for her so that is what I am trying to do.

More staying somewhat strong later….Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma

In that picture, Grandma and I had just washed her face with warm wash rags. I had also put Vit E on her nose and she had a huge drink of water. Grandma fed her about 5 melba toast (we call the cookie crackers) oh….and she tinkled. She came back in to the office and and crawled into bed and Grandma covered her with her gully blanket. That small leather love seat pulls out into a single bed and I laid there last night so she could be close to the dog door. We have suffered then survived through so many situations with Emma we know what work best for her and us. I also have a sling that I used when she had her back surgery a few years ago and I am going to use that tonight. She is having trouble getting up, but when she does, she is good to go albeit slow. A bell also comes in handy. You can clip it to a collar so you can know when they move or are tying to get up.

    Anyway….

We are so sorry to hear about Emma. Maybe she will improve when the herbs are out of her system. Give her a big hug for all of us. If there is anything at all that I can do for you please let me know. I am only a stones throw away. Hugs.

She looks so small there in her bed. Glad to see the Mayor helping to keep watch.

Did you call the new vet?

Know that we love you and will keep checking in here to see how Emma (and you) is doing.

Hang in there, Cat. You know your Emma so well. I agree it was probably the herbs and once they’re out of her system she’ll be better. Keep us posted!!

Hi everyone. Thank you so much for all of the Emma well wishes. It is about 11:30ish. Emma is in her bed sleeping good. Chaps is still keeping watch. The configuration has changed in the office and the love seat thing is not in position to open so I am wondering where to cat nap.

12:30 update…as I was writing the above update Emma got up and wanted some more cookie crackers. Joy of joys! She then wandered out to the living room and got in her comfort corner. I am so happy because I can sleep next to her now. It was a huge move for her.

Again, thanks for all of the comments. It really helps.

    Hoping for a great night.

Just to add some laughter to all of this…I am watching Mommy Dearest. What a shrew that woman was. I have seen it before.

Thank goodness Emma has a real dear Mommy. YES!

    More updates soon. Thank you…

    Love to the residents…

    Dear Mommy, Chaps and Shimmers…..

Just to let everyone know about the herbs. They were a cocktail of Chinese herbs that were supposed to help Emma with her water retention. It is a pretty common thing in Chinese medicine to help reduce the fluid without drugs. Emma tolerates her traditional water pill (Lasix) so I still have her on that. I also never stopped the steroids and the liver antibiotic. It is about 1:30am and she is up drinking water. I also gave her the second dose for the day of steroids, antibiotic and water pill. We were late with the first dose because she was sleeping. I have taken her off of the herbs and I will call Dr. Leick on Monday just to let him know.

Well, our Emma just got back in bed and I hope it is for the long haul. I am exhausted and will probably not hear her get up again.

That is unless I hear, “no more wire hangers….” Gezzus…that woman was down right crazy.

    Night night….

I hope everyone is resting and recovering in Bassethoundtown. I just wanted to share a story to hopefully bring a smile… when i was married to my first husband (the orthopedist) and I was really feeling down one day and watching Mommie Dearest- he came into the bedroom with red lipstick drawn over his lips, way over, and was slapping a hanger in his hands screaming “no wire hangers!” And then he got called into the ER and the red lipstick had stained his skin around his lips and he had to go to work looking like a cross dresser! I felt better.
Feel better everyone. Sunday is a day for rest.

Sandy that did make me laugh. Out Loud! Wow, that movie was really good. I think I have seen it about 4 times over the years. It never gets old to me. I love the scene where Joan is at her daughter’s bday party and she has the entire hollywood camera crew there. Then behind her are the army men. Just so sick.
