Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and updates about our Mayor Lovers…

I am trying Chaps out a few new things and I thought I would share with the residents.  The first thing we are trying is Adequan. This link is a really good article about it. What I liked was the second to the last paragraph…

“When coupled with acupuncture and chiropractic, I’ve observed that the benefit of Adequan is greatly increased, so if those therapies are available, they are also well worth seeking out. You can also continue the oral glucosamine supplementation with a high-quality supplement such as Cosequin; I know owners of large dogs who say they have been able to extend the symptom-free period between Adequan injections to as much as six months by starting out aggressively, and tapering off while giving oral glucosamine supplements at the highest recommended dose.”

Of course we are doing the acupuncture and chiropractic treatment as well.  I will keep everyone posted.  The loading dose for Chaps is 2 injections per week for 4 weeks.  He had his 4th injection today and I have noticed a difference, not huge…but we are only half way through.  I thought some of you with older hounds would find this information useful.  It is expensive at about 30 bucks per shot. I will keep the residents posted.

Also, I ordered some new food from Mr. Chewy for Chaps.  (Not a paid advertisement)

ChapsFood

The food choices are a combination of what Dr. Leick suggested and what I am adding.  When I asked Dr. Leick what the best dog food is on the market he immediately said, “Honest Kitchen”.  It is a a dehydrated mix that you add water to and it becomes a kind of mush.  I have not tried it yet but I will within a few days.  Mr. Chewy really has great service.  I placed my order and it came the next day.  Howl is that possible?  If you order at least 49 dollars worth of stuff you get free shipping so I had to add a few bucks.  See those calming treats?  hehehe – I will try those after I show them to Dr. Leick next week.  I hope they work!

I am going to mix in some Wellness for Seniors to add crunch and of course his low salt Premium Selection Turkey which I get at the Kroger Deli counter.  I love the stuff and now we both eat it.  If you try it make sure the person shaves it.  Delicious, I tell you and not salty at all.

This is the turkey which I add the low salt chicken broth to.  It is murder trying to find things that are low salt and it drives us crazy.  I found the broth in the health food section of Krogers not in the regular aisle of soups and broths.  It is made by Imagine – Organic free range chicken broth LOW SODIUM!  I love it and use it all the time now in dishes that require broth.  They have great soups in that section  that are low salt as well.

It was so funny.  The day I ordered the special food I gave Chaps a fortune cookie.  His fortune said, “You will receive a package of goodies soon.”  Can you believe that?  Too funny.  The Mayor loves fortune cookies.

We have decided not to address his diagnosis of cancer for now.  I have consulted with the expert (Marilyn at House of Puddles) and she confirmed that chemo would not be an option for Chaps at his age.  Of course that was Grandma and my initial impression anyway.

For now our Mayor is in tip top shape for an elderly gentle hound and we will carry on with all of these tasty healthy and holistic options.

Oh and one more thing….We did his 12 year old birthday photo shoot today.  I will be posting a few of the shots for your viewing pleasure later.  We did get the “Money Shot” that will be presented on his birthday, October 17, 2012.  Himz will be 12!

More loving a healthy and happy Mayor later….Cat, Chaps and Emma ATB and feasting on as much turkey as she wants, shaved of course!

Glad to hear Chaps is doing so well.

Just a suggestion, health food/organic stores like Whole Foods, Michaels and Fresh Fields carry a variety of low sodium products. I know I have purchased items in the past for my parents. If you have any of these stores in your area it would definitely be worth a look.

Does Chaps have any suggestions for birth gifts he would like to receive.

That is awesome that he is doing so well. We have been having so much luck here as well with Hayley’s raw food/ kibble mix and holistic herbs. I wish I had done it years ago. for the first time in her life she is itch free, has no sores or bald patches! and the best part is that she isn’t on any steroids or antibiotics!!!

    perfect.

i LOVE boars head low salt classic chicken breast..to me it is the only cold cut chicken product (or turkey) that they sell that tastes like what it should be). buy it all the time..ok so i don’t share..

i agree with the dr on the cancer thing. happy, “healthy” quality of life is important. i told that to someone else with their dog who was older as well. enjoy the time. don’t waste it on making the dog ill over treatment & then losing him anyway.

enjoy mr mayor. love the new food. eat like a happy pig but not too much.

i found these treats called “nuzzlers” that had cherry in them..cherry is awesome for joint issues (people & dogs) ..expensive of course but my guys LOVED them & i do think they helped. hard to find tho…

looking good mr mayor ..october sure is a great month for birthdays!

Maureen – Chaps is going to be asking for a dollar during the Holidays for House of Puddles. It would be best to wait for that. He would really like that. Thanks for asking….

Ahhhhhhhh…….Thank you guys for all of the sweet compliments on my Mommy skills. Of course I am not doing all of this alone. Grandma is the most caring lover of Chaps ever. Today I came in quietly from being out and Grandma was in the kitchen loving on Chaps and washing his face. She had just finished furminating him as well. We both dote on him non stop. We are all looking forward to a leaf viewing trip very soon. Maybe within days! Interestingly, our area of Northern KY has received a lot of rain within a few weeks and this will make for magnificent colors. CAN’T WAIT!!!
