October 5th, 2012 - 6:06 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and BHCA lovers.  I know some of you are.  I am certainly a lover of the hounds that work so hard to please the members of the club.  They are such sweet darling souls.

Wow, it hardly seems like it was a year ago when Grandma and I were at the BHCA Nationals with our vendor booths.  One was for bassethoundtown.com and one was for House of Puddles.  That part was fun.

ANYWAY…I want to stay focused on the hounds!

The health care and maintance of a Mayor…

October 3rd, 2012 - 6:06 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and updates about our Mayor Lovers…

photo 5

I am trying Chaps out a few new things and I thought I would share with the residents.  The first thing we are trying is Adequan. This link is a really good article about it. What I liked was the second to the last paragraph…

“When coupled with acupuncture and chiropractic, I’ve observed that the benefit of Adequan is greatly increased, so if those therapies are available, they are also well worth seeking out. You can also continue the oral glucosamine supplementation with a high-quality supplement such as Cosequin; I know owners of large dogs who say they have been able to extend the symptom-free period between Adequan injections to as much as six months by starting out aggressively, and tapering off while giving oral glucosamine supplements at the highest recommended dose.”

Of course we are doing the acupuncture and chiropractic treatment as well.  I will keep everyone posted.  The loading dose for Chaps is 2 injections per week for 4 weeks.  He had his 4th injection today and I have noticed a difference, not huge…but we are only half way through.  I thought some of you with older hounds would find this information useful.  It is expensive at about 30 bucks per shot. I will keep the residents posted.

Also, I ordered some new food from Mr. Chewy for Chaps.  (Not a paid advertisement)

ChapsFood

The food choices are a combination of what Dr. Leick suggested and what I am adding.  When I asked Dr. Leick what the best dog food is on the market he immediately said, “Honest Kitchen”.  It is a a dehydrated mix that you add water to and it becomes a kind of mush.  I have not tried it yet but I will within a few days.  Mr. Chewy really has great service.  I placed my order and it came the next day.  Howl is that possible?  If you order at least 49 dollars worth of stuff you get free shipping so I had to add a few bucks.  See those calming treats?  hehehe – I will try those after I show them to Dr. Leick next week.  I hope they work!

ChapsFood4

I am going to mix in some Wellness for Seniors to add crunch and of course his low salt Premium Selection Turkey which I get at the Kroger Deli counter.  I love the stuff and now we both eat it.  If you try it make sure the person shaves it.  Delicious, I tell you and not salty at all.

This is the turkey which I add the low salt chicken broth to.  It is murder trying to find things that are low salt and it drives us crazy.  I found the broth in the health food section of Krogers not in the regular aisle of soups and broths.  It is made by Imagine – Organic free range chicken broth LOW SODIUM!  I love it and use it all the time now in dishes that require broth.  They have great soups in that section  that are low salt as well.

ChapsFood2

It was so funny.  The day I ordered the special food I gave Chaps a fortune cookie.  His fortune said, “You will receive a package of goodies soon.”  Can you believe that?  Too funny.  The Mayor loves fortune cookies.

ChapsFood3

We have decided not to address his diagnosis of cancer for now.  I have consulted with the expert (Marilyn at House of Puddles) and she confirmed that chemo would not be an option for Chaps at his age.  Of course that was Grandma and my initial impression anyway.

For now our Mayor is in tip top shape for an elderly gentle hound and we will carry on with all of these tasty healthy and holistic options.

Oh and one more thing….We did his 12 year old birthday photo shoot today.  I will be posting a few of the shots for your viewing pleasure later.  We did get the “Money Shot” that will be presented on his birthday, October 17, 2012.  Himz will be 12!

More loving a healthy and happy Mayor later….Cat, Chaps and Emma ATB and feasting on as much turkey as she wants, shaved of course!

BLEUDOG AND PUP to be dedicated near Seattle:)

September 28th, 2012 - 10:10 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and items of beauty lovers…

I love finding these little treasure stories to report to the residents.

Woodinville’s Basset Hound Sculpture to be Dedicated Next Friday

The newly installed art sculpture known as Bleudog and Pup, made possible by a donation from the late Malka Fricks, will be dedicated at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5 in Woodinville, Washington.

BassetMomPup

A 2-foot tall bronze basset hound mom and pup statue is visible to motorists and pedestrians as they pass the corner of 133rd Avenue NE.

BassetMomPUp3

The sculpture is a donation from the late Malka Fricks, a former City Parks and Recreation Commissioner. The work, a 2-foot-tall bronze basset hound mother and pup, was designed and built by artist Shelley S. Curtiss.

BassetMomPup2

The dedication will take place in front of the sculpture, at the corner of 133rd Avenue NE. The City has extended the sidewalk to make room for the sculpture and will provide lighting and landscaping after completing needed electrical work.

End of article….

Wow, I wish the Mayor and I were close enough to attend the dedication.  Any of the residents planning on going?  It looks like Woodinville is somewhat near Seattle.

Washington State

More loving Bleudog and her pup later….Cat, Chaps and Emma ATB and probably going to the dedication.

UPDATED RUN SHEET FOR THIS WEEKEND, 2 BLOG POSTINGS DOWN….

September 28th, 2012 - 3:03 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and keeping up with the run lovers…

I put the updated run sheet in the original blog posting 2 blogs down so I could keep them together.  I also added a picture of KoKo after her eye removal surgery.  (enucleation)

She looks pretty good to me and I know she must be in so much less pain.

I hope they all find great homes but of course I have a soft spot for dear KoKo.  I sure hope to keep up with her.

Wish I was going on the transport so I could offer her some kind words.

END OF TRANSPORT!!  Thank you for helping these dogs on their road to a new life!!

Again, wish they were coming through my neck of the woods because I would have been ready ina heart beat.  I enjoy the transports.

END OF UPDATE…..

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and moving hounds across state line lovers.

We have a pack of hounds that need to move this weekend to their allotted basset hound rescues and I was wondering if any one is willing to pick up a leg or two if you are in the geographic area.  I have posted the run sheet below.

#3 KoKo is especially close to my heart because she just had her eyes removed due to glaucoma.  She has been blind for awhile so the removal did not affect her that much.

I actually blurred the eyes in this picture because it was hard to look at.  Poor thing must have been in pain but that is all different now.  She was rescued by Helena Poist and networked into ABC rescue up in New York.  Nice work guys!

Subject: Update 2 – TRANS: Carthage, MO to Columbia, PA & Buffalo, NY – Sat-Sun, Sept 29-30

We really need to turn up the gas on this one – it’s Wednesday already and we have a LOT left to do.  Please crosspost like crazy so we can get these dogs moved to make room for more at the shelter!!

PERMISSION TO CROSSPOST TO TRUSTED CONTACTS – NO CRAIGSLIST OR FACEBOOK, PLEASE!!

Here’s an opportunity to help some mill dogs find happiness for the first time in their lives.  These 6 were either released from mills or saved at auction and are now on their way to wonderful rescues in NY and PA.

As always, the legs are flexible – let me know what you can do and I’ll see if I can adjust.  I am assuming I’ll need 2 drivers for most legs, but if you can take them all, that would be awesome!  🙂  And if you’re driving for the Brittany transport and can fit one of these guys on, let me know.  I’ll be syncing my times up with Nancy’s.

Please crosspost so we can get these sweeties started on their new lives and open up some space for other dogs at the Carthage shelter.

Thanks so much –

Joan  Nickum

YouTube find of the day – Drool and Sand – What a combo!

September 25th, 2012 - 1:01 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Beach lovers…What a cute video.

I guess this is someone with hound in France.  I pulled the YouTube information over into Google Translate to see what it said.  My many years of french is not fully paying off.  Go down a bit to see what it says.  I had to laugh at a few parts.

TRANSLATION….

The basset is derived from crosses between ancient French breeds, including Basset d’Artois (now extinct breed) and Saint-Hubert. As a hunting dog is suited to small and medium game and hunt in packs. It reveals tough, stubborn. He has a good nose and a deep voice. It is also increasingly sought after as a pet because it is considered a very friendly race. Hide his melancholy indeed a loving pet, playful, placid and gentle with children. Stubborn, it requires a firm education. It must be kept on a leash when walking because his flair gives it a tendency to wander when he feels a track. It then no longer hear his master’s voice. The Basset has a tendency to scream when he feels that something is wrong (a storm coming, for example). He laments often somewhat when trying to attract attention. It is heard especially when begging for food or caresses.

End of translation…

More loving finds of the day later….Cat, Chaps and Emma ATB and maybe at the beach?
