Special touches to start the weekend in bassethoundtown…decorating for Chaps and Emma!

May 17th, 2013 - 7:07 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Special Touches Lovers…Today I was re-arranging a few things in a big cabinet I have in the living room.  That is when I spotted a zip lock baggie.  I opened it up and saw what appeared to be a twist of metal or something.  I swear I cannot remember where I got this but is seemed familiar.

Turns out it is a wire that spells out the name Emma!  For the life of me I cannot remember where I got it.  It’s is all very vague.

Emmawire1

I added it to her urn box and it just looks beautiful…

Emmawire2

Then I was still messing around in the cabinet and found a card that Lois and Suzanne sent me after Emma passed away.  Inside of the card is a pin that I cherish.

Since the pin is obviously, a boy hound;) I added it to Chaps urn box…

Chapsangel1

A little gift to me, now from Emma to Chaps…

Two special touches…

I just had to share….Basset/Dalmatian Mix

May 16th, 2013 - 9:09 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and sharing lovers…I am on the Petfinder alert system for new basset hounds added…

I get this e-mail almost every day…

“Hello CatChapsEmma!

Hi again from Petfinder.com!

Pets have been added to Petfinder that satisfy your ‘Basset Hounds’ pet search.

Click here to see newly added pets that match your search: http://www.petfinder.com/pet-search?search_id=426010&new_pets=1.

Click here to see all pets that match your search: http://www.petfinder.com/pet-search?search_id=426010. Thanks for thinking of the pets,
Petfinder.com “.

I normally delete these e-mails because frankly, I just can’t bare to look at all of them and there are sooooo many.  I do have a problem with some people that list on Petfinder. They know that in some cases, folks are looking for a particular breed  so they add a list of what they think the mixture is and it inevitably includes basset hound because they are sweet, kind family dogs. More than half of the newly added basset hounds look like a very cute mutt.

Speaking of which….I had to share…

Meet Wolfgang, the ““basset hound”/dalmatian” mix…???
Wolfgang1

Interestingly, I love this particular mix and have seen and fell in love with a few in my decades of hound rescue.

Wolfgang2

I am not seeing much basset in this one but dangit…Isn’t Wolfgang the cutest?

I bet he does not last long at his current foster home.

Here is Marsie and Nosey…

BHTWalkMarsieNosey

As a side note…Look at the article next to the picture…something about searching for a new mayor!

It was not related of course, but I thought it was funny.

DaisyPaper3

Of course, we here in bassethoundtown have our new Mayor and she walked up to the local quickie mart with Grandma and I to purchase a few hard copies of the paper for prosperity!

Daisypaper1

It was a stunningly spectacular day for a walk and our Daisy Lynn was strutting her stuff with pride!

We got home and I want to show off Grandpa’s Irises and clematis plantings now in full bloom.

Daisypaper2

Our young Mayor was so tired and crawled into the late Mayor’s worry bed to play with her newspaper toy (The Daily Growl).  I wonder if she is dreaming of more breaking news?

More loving public relations later…Cat, Daisy Lynn (Chaps and Emma ATB) reporting from the rainbow press room.

May 12th, 2013 - 11:11 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Mother’s Day lovers.  We here in bassethoundtown wish you a wonderful day.  Daisy Lynn and I started off our day the same way we do everyday.  We spend a few minutes talking to our loved ones at the rainbow bridge. It is really interesting because Daisy Lynn has always come back and appears to be listening.  Very cute.   I was yammering on and on to Grandpa about howl I missed all of my hounds while hoping for a sign.  You know me and my signs!

I have everyone together.  I never understood the scattering thing.  Nope, not for me.

MomDay2013:2

Then, I looked down and saw this….(my camera was within reach on my desk)

Ask for a sign and you shall receive a sign.

Momday2013:1

I swear on my own Mother that I did not place Chloe’s favorite toy there.

MomDay2013:3

It’s a heart as you can see.  Daisy Lynn has never even picked it up, (that I can remember).

MomDay2013:4

It used to say, “I love you”.

MomDay3013:5

From the rainbow bridge it still does.

More loving my Mother’s day later…Cat, Daisy Lynn (Chaps and Emma ATB) letting me know.

PS – Grandma was the one that always bought the I love you heart toys for her grand hounds.  What a wonderful connection.  Happy Mother’s Day Grandma….

What is the history/roots of Basset Hound Rescue?

May 8th, 2013 - 3:03 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Basset Hound Rescue Lovers!

I want to pick everyone’s brains about the past. What are the roots/history of basset hound rescue? I have been working with some of the old timers in Rescue, the BHCA, The Bugler, and just anyone else that I can ask. From what I have learned in my research, bassets were fairly rare before the mid-50’s when “The People’s Choice” aired and starred the basset named Cleo. I have heard from several of my sources that this show kind of jump started the basset hound popularity during the late 50s/early 60s.

People's Choice Cleo

Cleo became so popular that a Little Golden Book (Simon and Schuster) was quickly developed and rushed into the hands of the new basset hound lovers…

cleo

I know my friend, Evelyn Leavens, who has recently passed away, adopted Boswell in 1953 from Lyn Mar Acres in NJ because of the popular TV show mentioned above.

Boswell Pedigree

It was a perfect time to write and illustrate her wildly popular children’s book, Boswell’s life of Boswell, (Simon and Schuster) which was number 2 on the New York Times Best Seller List for a brief period of time. I am sure many a kid wanted a basset after pouring over the amazing artwork and fun words.

So, with the combination of these 3 events bassets became more popular and entering more and more families. One thing is for sure, when a dog gets popular on TV and in books it is not always a good thing.

I was thinking that this would be about the same time that demand created a supply.

So, what do you know about the roots of basset hound rescue?

More loving the history of bassets later…Cat, Daisy Lynn (Chaps and Emma ATB) knowing the answers to every question…

PS – I have the entire People’s Choice TV series on DVD.  I have not watched it yet but I will soon.  I will try to share a few clips with the residents.

I love my blog;)

May 6th, 2013 - 1:01 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and loving my blog lovers…Well, I hope there are a few in that category!  A few weeks ago a woman contacted me about her basset going blind from glaucoma.  She thanked me for my sub-blog – Seeing with your heart, and nose

It is so frightening to receive this diagnosis and you need answers fast to many questions.  What to do?  What to do? Well, we discussed what I would do and basically emphatically suggested she do exactly that, which I am pleased to report she did.  Of course Emma was the guiding light.

Minnie is home and is adjusting with the grace and dignity of a basset hound.  She has the support of her family who adore and cherish her.

Glad bassethoundtown could help…

More continuing my research and investigation into horrible breeding practices later….Cat, Daisy Lynn (Chap and Emma ATB) cheering me on….

New sub-blog for Evelyn Leavens…

May 4th, 2013 - 9:09 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Evelyn Leavens Lovers…I am in the process of adding a new sub-blog called Evelyn Leavens.  This is the design that I created for it.

730x297 evelyn header

Here is where I will share some more details of her life and some more of her art work.  Evelyn, had an extensive collection of Boswell sketches that have never been seen by more than a few people.  I am please to say that she gave me access to all of them.

Evelyn was not a huge fan of looking back on her Boswell years.  It never sat well with her that Boswell could be her only claim to fame.

A few days before she died I had sent Evelyn 2 final Boswell books to sign.  I am a collector.  I have about 30 or more copies.  Oh, but that is for another sub-blog posting…

More Evelyn and Boswell memories later….Love Cat, Daisy Lynn (Chaps and Emma ATB) having the Boswell book read to them…
