Basset Hounds in the News…

April 3rd, 2019 - 10:10 am KY Time

Howllow Fellow Basset Hound and in the news lovers…I was reading the basset hound wires this morning and came across this cute story/obituary…

Basset hound, icon at local barber shop, remembered…

Buster left a legacy at the Sweet Home Barber Shop in Oregon.

Some businesses have regulars who customers may sometimes find remarkable and memorable.

Think Norm of “Cheers.” Quark’s Lounge had Morn, along with a sly Ferengi proprietor.

At Sweet Home Barber Shop, on the corner of 22nd and Main, it was Buster.

The crotchety but loveable basset hound spent his days in the shop as a service animal for business owner Erik von Göttsegen, a disabled veteran.

The 18½-year-old dog was a bit of an icon among customers, and neighboring resident Joe Moore said the dog saved his life.

Buster died March 7.

Von Göttsegen, who moved to Sweet Home from Grants Pass seven years ago and opened his business a year later, said Buster was a Delta Society-certified therapy dog. A customer gave Buster to him 16 years ago before moving to the East Coast to take care of sick relatives.

Von Göttsegen would take Buster to rest homes, where they would visit residents with dementia and Alzheimer’s. He also took Buster to visit residents of hospice centers.

Moore credits Buster with rescuing him from a fire.

“I was boiling some eggs,” said Moore, who has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. “I fell asleep on the couch.”

The water ran out in the pan, and smoke filled the house, which sits next to Sweet Home Barber Shop.

When Moore came to, his front door was open, and von Göttsegen was outside with Buster. The smoke had set off the detector, and Buster had started going crazy, which got his owner’s attention.

Von Göttsegen opened the door, and smoke billowed out, he said. The house had not caught fire at that point, but “another few minutes and Joe wouldn’t be here.”

“I made a pact with Buster,” Moore said. “Every day, I’d bring him a treat. He was my buddy. He was my best friend, actually. I would walk over here, he’d hear my voice and get up. I always had a piece of jerky in my pocket. He always got up to say hi to me.”

Buster would sometimes slip out to visit Moore at his house too.

“The thing he did most is he comforted people,” von Göttsegen said. With Alzheimer’s patients, they couldn’t remember family members or what they ate for lunch, but they would remember Buster.

“A lot of people can’t have dogs,” he added, and visiting Buster was a chance for them to vicariously have a pet dog.

Buster was “an accomplished co-pilot,” von Göttsegen said. The hound logged some 300 hours flying with von Göttsegen.

City Manager Ray Towry mentioned Buster, using him to illustrate a point, last week during the City Council’s goal-setting and training retreat. Since going to work in Sweet Home in 2016, von Göttsegen has been cutting Towry’s hair and he has enjoyed visiting with Buster.

“I used to stop by there and give Buster treats,” Towry said. He left the shop one day, and Buster “followed me halfway to the street.”

“Buster was grumpy,” Towry said. “The first time I met him, he tried to bite me.”

If Buster was a little famous, “a lot of it’s because you couldn’t pet him,” Towry said, and von Göttsegen had warned him. Towry just couldn’t resist making friends with the dog.

Barber Erik von Gottsegen, left and Joe Moor give new arrival Bernies some love at the shop.

“I’m the kid who always brought the stray dog home,” Towry said.

He knows the way to a dog’s heart is through its stomach, so he started making sure he showed up with treats.

Buster is one of those small-town things, and “it’s probably the reason I kept going there, honestly,” Towry said. “I always looked forward to seeing if Buster would remember me and see if I could get my hand away quickly enough when I got my treat out.”

He added that he enjoys visiting with von Göttsegen too: “Erik’s always a great conversationalist. We talk about flying and what’s going on in town.”

Stepping into some big shoes for Buster at the shop is Bernie, a 10-year-old basset hound from Grants Pass.

“He’s great with kids,” von Göttsegen said.

“Bernie’s very friendly,” Moore said. “He’s not as vocal as Buster, but he loves everybody.”

end of article…

Well, well, well, a life well lived by Buster.  I wish Erik and Bernie lots and lots of haircuts and joy to all…

More loving basset hounds in the news later…Cat, Daisy Lynn, (Chaps and Emma ATB showing Buster around)

PS – My grandpa on my Mom’s side was a barber.  I think Buster just found his new shop!

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and so much going on lovers…Hope all of the residents are enjoying the first days of April.  I got through yesterday with no one playing a joke on me.  I was focused on bassethoundtown and our 22 year “gotcha” day.  Yes, It was 22 years yesterday that I closed on our beloved town.  I am overwhelmingly grateful!!!  As I was looking for some pictures of bassethoundtown to post I ran across this from 7 years ago.  OMDOG!!!  What a treasure…

Howl times change and howl they stay the same.

Let the journey continue…

Outer Banks – Corolla, NC here we come…The Inn of Corolla Light:)

March 2nd, 2019 - 7:07 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Lily Book Tour Lovers…Have you ever been to the Outer Banks?  I had never been before but we intend on going back.  Back in the day about a decade or less ago the Outer Banks was a treasure.  It still is in many ways but now it is over run with huge rental houses as far as the eye can see.

I marveled at howl gigantic mansions like this can be filled with families for the entire length of the banks.  Astounding…

When I was doing my research I wondered if there were any old school Outer Banks still to be found???  I learned there were these types of options dotted up and down the Banks but not many.

We were so lucky to find The Inn of Corolla Light…what a gem!  Totally old school with charm out the wazoo!!!

The Inn of Corolla Light is located on the sound side of the banks.  If you look at the first picture where the row of houses is you will see the sound side.

Here is my room…right on the sound!!!

This side boasts some of the best sunsets in the world.  Here you will find Grandma and Daisy Lynn waiting for the sunset – it’s just howl we roll!

Ready, set… Life is good on the sound side!

Sound Sunset Selfie…

Daisy Lynn getting ready for bed.  You might be able to see that my room had a kitchenette with microwave and fridge.  We brought in crab cakes and fixings from Nags Head on our way in.  OMGAWD!!!

This is the adjoining room that we will get the next time for Grandma.  She was on the second floor right above me but we love our adjoining rooms and Daisy Lynn goes wild for them!!!  hahaha

We got up the next morning and this is the pathway to walk your dog…If you make a right at the end of that bridge it takes you all the way to the light house and Currituck.  I will show you in another picture later…

Your room comes with a full breakfast with outdoor dining if you have a hound…

Grandma stayed with Daisy Lynn while I made our breakfasts. Daisy Lynn had a sausage link and a few bites of egg…

We only had 2 nites in Corolla so we had to move fast.  We never did get to the beach but we wanted to spend what time we did have looking around this treasure trove.

After breakfast we walked out to the gazebo.

The Inn’s black lab kept us company.  Showing off his mad dock jumping skills to catch himz tennis ball.  OMDOG!!!

OK, look behind me and you will see the lighthouse.  You can take a path right from my room’s door and walk the whole way over there.  Or you can take that pontoon right behind me.  There is the original town of Corolla with little shops – so quaint.

This picture should be on the Inn’s website!!!

We drove the basset hauling vehicle over to Currituck Beach Light Station and spent a few hours. There is small book store over there and I dropped off the Lily book and spoke to the owner who was very grumpy.  Howl can you be grumpy in the Outer Banks?

Summer time and the light house is fine!

It’s time for one more sunset…

This is absolutely amazing.  The sky was full of grey blue clouds right until the very second that the sun set.  It was like a perfect gift at the end of a perfect day…

It was like I picked my outfit to match…

Goodbye for now Outer Banks…

More loving that moment of glory later…Cat, Grandma, Daisy Lynn, (Chaps and Emma ATB sending last second sunsets later…)

Howllow Fellow Basset Hound and getting it done lovers…

SO MUCH TO DO.  SO LITTLE TIME…

Daisy was helping me work in my office and I stepped out to get a FedX package.  When I got back to the office she was in this position.

I had Grandpaws coat on her to ward off a slight chill from the dog door.  Oh, the life of my co-worker.  hahaha

More loving so little time later…Cat, Daisy Lynn, (Chaps and Emma ATB with all the time needed…)

Taxes aka not contentment:(

January 26th, 2019 - 7:07 pm KY Time

Howllow Fellow Basset Hound and doing taxes not lovers.  I am not sure anyone really loves doing taxes.  It takes Grandma, Daisy Lynn and I hours and hours and hours just to prep mine for my tax person.  It’s like performing an autopsy on your finances.  So, why am I blogging about it?  Cause I got this cute picture!!! hehehe

Jesus take the wheel!

More loving taking pictures of taxes and not actually doing them later…Cat, Daisy Lynn (Chaps and Emma ATB taking the wheel…)

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Contentment Lovers…

One word…

One picture…

As you can see I tried my paw at drawing a picture of the word.  That was a challenge but I am very content with it!  😉

It will sit with my other word rocks…

And be a reminder to hug a hound!

More contentment later…

Love, Cat, Daisy Lynn, (Chaps and Emma ATB on contentment rainbow clouds…)

Time for a new word and a new rock to put it on!

January 13th, 2019 - 11:11 am KY Time

Howllow Fellow Basset Hound and New Word for 2019 lovers.  I love my new words and my rock collection is growing and inspiring.

This year the word is something I have no trouble with.

CONTENTMENT

If you have or have had a basset hound I am pretty sure you know the feeling of contentment.  I came up with this word because I was eavesdropping on New Years Eve.  I heard a person say that their resolution for 2019 was to be more content.  It made me think.  Can you make yourself content or is it a state of being?  Baffled and now on a mission to find out I did what one does…Google it!

I liked what someone named Siddharta said,

“Health is the most precious gain and contentment the greatest wealth”.

I would agree with that!

Can you capture contentment in a picture?

I think you can…

Just find your basset and add salt and sand.  CONTENTMENT...got it!!!

Now, let me go look for the perfect rock to add to my word collection…

Stay tuned…

More loving contentment later…Cat, Daisy Lynn, (Chaps and Emma ATB, aka beach laying on rainbow waves…)

PS – wonder if that person found contentment???
