Chaps is crying!!!!
Howllo Fellow Hound and Chaps lovers: Poor Chaps. We are surrounded by thunder storms today and he is so frightened by them. He just cries and cries. He also pants and pants. Nothing can comfort him. Sometimes he tries to lay on top of Emma for some reason. All you can see is her head peeking out.
The storms do not bother Emma in the least. She is fine with them, she always has been.
Chaps lived at BoBac Bassets in TX from birth until he was 3 and a half. He was in a back kennel structure that was made of metal. I bet storms were crazy loud in that thing. That could be why he so frightened.
I will keep his fans posted. Anyone have any suggestions to ease his pain? I have tried almost everything except medication. I do not want to do that.
More storms later…Cat, Chaps and Emma
My parents’ Clover moved from SoCal to Texas when she was 12+. She became terrified during the storms, so Mom got Ace Promazine to give her. She only had to give Clover 1/8 of a pill (and they are smaller than a pencil eraser!)to take the edge off her anxiety (and she’d go to sleep.) I employed the same dosage when my Rusty Paws suddenly (after living in Texas, No. Carolina and Missouri for 11+ years)developed the same problem. It helped so much (we tried OTC Rescue Remedy and it did not have any effect.) I wouldn’t give the whole dose to knock Rusty Paws out (afraid he’d not wake up!) but Mom said her vet told her he had dalmatians in his practice who were still wired after 2 entire tablets were given!! Once Rusty had a hard time seeing and hearing–ironically, when we moved BACK to Texas–the storms no longer affected him. (He was 15+ then.)
My oldest basset Maddie has the same issue, we tried meds but didnt like how out of it that it made her, we turn on every tv in the house and the radio in the kitchen , and use a couple of box fans. It seems to help some depending on how bad the storm is. Poor Chaps , Maddie sends him and Emma kisses ! Hope this is a new idea!
Oh my poor buddy Chaps! Lucien was just as scared of storms. He would hide on my lap and try to get under me. Then he would get Lilly all scared too. I found that putting a tight shirt on him (so he felt snug) and holding him tight helped some. I would also act normal (not try to talk babytalk to him) and leave the TV or stereo on kind of loud. Thank you everyone for the suggestions. I really learned a lot. Melynda, I tried to get a tight t-shirt on the Mayor. He was to upset, so I have to practice with it when it is not bad weather. I cannot wait to get a picture of him in his “beater”!
