Howl is our Trooper doing? His Foster Mommy checks in!

May 27th, 2010 - 8:08 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Trooper Lovers! Basset Hound Town resident, Maureen was checking on Trooper and his Foster Mommy copied us on the reply e-mail! Thanks Maureen and Mary!

Here is the e-mail…..

“Hello Residents of Basset Hound Town!

I am doing pretty well right now. I am getting stronger by the day and so now I have to deal with some of my other health issues. I just finished a 2-week round of Prednisone for my eyes that the vet says she thinks are possibly due to allergies. Additionally, I am taking Doxycycline to treat my heartworms because the vet recommended that I do not get the harsh and more dangerous Imiticide treatments. I have had a little trouble tolerating some medications, so instead, I am getting a higher dose of the antibiotic Doxycycline to kill the bacteria that lives symbiotically on the surface of the heartworm. Theoretically, when the bacteria dies, the heartworm cannot survive – and thus my heartworms will be treated in what the vet called a “back-door” way. She said that she learned about this at a recent veterinary conference she attended and would like to try this for me. Fortunately, I can tolerate Doxycycline – so this will be much better if it works. It could take a little longer to get rid of the heartworms – because I take Doxycycline one month followed by 2 months off – and then repeat until I test negative for heartworms. The vet feels that this long term treatment is best because it is safer for me.

You asked about my foster brothers and sister. Bentley (11 yrs) is a Beagle, Maggie (7 yrs) is a Basset Hound, Pepper (4 yrs) is a Terrier Mix (that looks like Benjy), and Kirby (3 yrs) is a Basset Hound. They are really nice to me and we all have a good time playing and barking at squirrels and neighborhood cats!

I will attach a copy of the Basset Buddies Rescue of Texas auction flyer. They are honoring ME for this fundraising event! – and so I get to be the only dog there! I hope that they can raise lots of money to help dogs like me get a second chance at life. I will let you know how it goes!

Love, hugs, and drool,

Your Trooper”

Well, Maureen and I must have been thinking about Trooper together. I was just thinking about him a few days ago and wondering how he was. I sure hope the Doxy works for his heartworms. Hopefully he’s not heavy positive. Even with just taking Heartguard regularly the larve (sp) are killed and the adults eventually die off. They don’t live forever.

I know he needs dental work too but that’s probably not as big of a deal as the heartworms. It makes me feel better that the HW treatments are started. I HATE those dang things!!!

How exciting that Troops will be the star of the show at this event! I’m sure he’ll do great with bringing in money and volunteers for the rescue.

Mary – I know that but I guess I was confused about the flier saying Phoenix. I need to go back and read that flier.

Cat, even though I’m near Houston I’ve never heard of the University of Phoenix in Houston. But evidently there is one.

I have no idea why it’s named that yet housed in Houston.

I really wish I could get another Basset Hound. My wife doesn’t want me to have another dog. She tells me Linus is honary and stubborn. But for some reason when I’m there he is a sweetheart lol. She really doesn’t understand my love for Basset Hounds. She should because she loves Daschunds. Wait did I spell that right? lol

Blasphemy! Blasphemy I tell you! Honary and stubborn? LOL

I think the U of Phoenix started as an online school, although now they do have some real classrooms in larger cities.

I am so glad Trooper has responded well to all his treatments. He is one wonderful hound.

Trooper should be an amazing fund raiser! He is one of the most amazing rescue stories/transformations that I have ever heard. Any chance of getting some new pictures of Trooper?
