DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Tuesday’s special election got off to an unusual start at one polling location.

When poll workers arrived at the Animal Resource Center early Tuesday morning, they found five, four-legged visitors abandoned at the Bark Park. Four Basset Hounds and one Bloodhound were quickly taken inside, where workers determined they suffered from neglect and possible ear infections.

Mark Kumpf, the Director of the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center stated,
“Well the Bark Park is a fenced area, and unfortunately with the economy as it is, we find folks who are not as eager to talk to someone about why they’re abandoning their pet, so often we find them here at the Bark Park or tossed over the fence at the Animal Resource Center or even tied to a lamp post here in the front lot.”

“We hope that someone will come forward with information so we can locate the owner.”

Unless an owner comes forward, officials said the dogs will be reviewed for adoption.

END OF ARTICLE

Note from Cat: Why on this green earth would anyone want to locate the owner? Isn’t it pretty much clear that the owner dumped off the dogs?

I don’t think they all wandered over there and said, “Hey lets just hang in this ball field.” I know bassets are really smart, but I don’t think they can latch a gate. I could be wrong. Emma’s Mommy could unlatch gates.

Anyway, I forwarded this alert to OH Basset Hound Rescue and to my friend who runs Outlaw Basset Hound Rescue in OH.

Geeze, who would think that the owner would come forward?

More hoping beyond hope that the previous idiot who was the owner never owns dogs again. That is a privilege that is way to good for them. I don’t care if you have 2 cent in your pocket you do right by your dogs. Cowards I tell you, Cowards. Cat, Chaps and Emma

I think the owner(s) should be located, fined and punished for their neglect and cruelty.

I hope these animals find loving caring homes. They deserve it.

I cannot understand why people do this. There are so many alternatives, rescues, humane societies, etc. These places don’t judge. If you can no longer care for a pet, for whatever reason, these organizations are there to help.

I would never have a problem adopting from a rescue again.

while i don’t condone what they did i at least give them credit for not turning the dogs loose on the streets..at least they knew the dogs would be safe & found.

we have had that happen at our dog park from time to time…no its not a perfect solution by any means…but like i said..the dogs do make their way into a safety net.

spca’s charge to leave animals & some folks can’t afford that…others can’t handle the mental stress…again…NOT saying what they did was right..it sucks big time…but lets not forget the dogs are all safe,,,& were not turned loose to fend for themselves wandering along a busy street or out in some wooded area.

i personally couldn’t do it…for me it would kill me to lose my dogs & turn them back to rescue…but if it came to that i would…some people just don’t know where else to turn..maybe losing their home, no $$ for food, whatever..

I know what you are saying Lois. I know everyone handles situations differently.

The only thing I could possibly think of that would justify this behavior would be in the case of abuse. If the person that dropped the dogs off was being abused by a partner and perhaps the dogs were being abused as well. I could understand then.

I am thrilled the dogs are safe and I do hope that whoever left them is smart enough not to have FIVE dogs ever again.

I thought the comment by the AC person was whack a doo! Find the owners? Worst idea ever!

Well, contacting the owners would benefit in at least knowing the dogs names and ages. It may bring comfort to the dog to keep his name. I didn’t change Rugby’s name for that very reason. He’s been Rugs since he was a pup and that is one constant he’s had while being moved through 4 different homes. He’s home to stay now! Then, if by any stroke of luck, if they have vet records, the dogs won’t have to be poked again. It’s also nice to know their personailties. I guess since I worked with rescue for a while is why I think of these things.

My Ozzie and Harriet were tied to a fence outside of an animal shelter because their owners didn’t want to pay the fee to turn them in. And by the looks of Harriet, I can see why they didn’t want to be questioned. She was obviously used for breeding. They probably have filthy conditions and don’t want anyone to know about them or where they are at.

    Just my 2 cents.

Cindy – I don’t think whoever dropped these hounds off is going to be forthcoming enough to offer any information. If they cared, they would have left all of the information in a gallon sized zip lock bag and tied it to the fence. Howl ever, they were not kind enough to do that. It would have put a whole new spin on the situation for me. Just load um up and dump um off under the cover of darkness. Thank Dog they had enough brain cells to find a fenced in area.

I remember a blog I did a few years ago about a dog that was dropped off in a basket outside of a fenced in boutique in a town near me. The dog had all of it’s toys and a 3 page letter from the owners describing their plight. The letter explained that the shop owner had always seems so kind to dogs and they knew she would do the right thing by theirs. It touched the hearts and souls of many communities and drew the media. The dog became a local celebrity.

The shop owner would see an elderly couple strolling by very slow peering into the shop from time to time.

There are many ways to do right by your pet. I think that people either have compassion or they don’t.

It takes courage to do the right thing.

Some people are just heartless idiots.

Thank goodness for modern technology. We hear more bad news due to it being available to us via internet but we also hear good news. And we’re able to capture a bigger audience to help.

I totally agree Cindy. Just like finding Little Martha the lost basset.

Regarding this story, hopefully it helps someone who might be considering this horrible option. If they do, maybe they will leave information.

I think the owner(s) should be rounded up, tortured, duck-taped to a refrigerator and dumped in a landfill for what they did to all these pupcakes:( grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. People….God’s sole mistake;)

Shame on people who just give up on their pets. I can understand if you are going through tough times but at least take the time to find a home for them. A while back I had a friend who just got a basset and she wouldn’t work out for him. He was worried to death that she would drown when he let her out to go potty. This even made me upset. I was like, if you let her out then go out with her! But at the same time, he found her a home and it was given to a guy here he worked with. Still he took his time and found her a home. I wanted her really bad because she loooked just like beau. But we already had 5 doggies 🙂 LOL But back to what I was saying, shame on the person who did this. I hope those 5 doggies find a home. Dayton OH Nice close to my home town. I miss OH and KY
