Meet bassethoundtown resident Judy’s flock! Howl cool!
Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Flock Lovers! Over the course of making comments and meeting each other and making friends we learn a lot about each other here in BHT. Recently we learned that Judy, of Bumper and Abby fame, has a flock of birds living in her home.
Judy states, “I have 3 large parrots. Sunday is a blue and gold macaw that was abused and only likes me. She is about 20 years old now and I have had her about 17 years. Snowbird is my umbrella cockatoo – she was my first “big bird” and is a real sweetie. Snow is about 22 and I have had her for 18 years. She was abused and kicked by her former owners. We also have Buddy an African grey – Buddy came from a home that did not have time for him but he is very sweet now. Buddy is about 23 and I have had him for 16 years. All 3 birds talk but Buddy is by far the smartest and can mimic almost any sound in the house including the telephone. Note – birds are a LOT of work and they are very noisy and very few vets will see them – not everyone should own big birds and sometimes I question my sanity as to why I have 3 of them. It is a zoo around here.”
Judy, I love your zoo! I cannot wait to come over and visit the flock and the kids. Judy and I live in the same town within bassethoundtown!
Thanks for that picture of the flock Judy. Very nice! Can you teach Buddy to say, “all hail the mayor”? That would be too cool! hehehe
More news from flock later….Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma
I had always wanted and red and gold macaw, but I couldn’t get over how expensive they were. What kind of things do your birds say?
Maureen, you can rescue birds like dogs. I’ll bet they’re reasonable if you rescue. Judy knows!
Thanks so much for the pics Judy! They are just gorgeous. I’m sure I wouldn’t be able to handle birds but I’d love to visit your zoo. I’m sure I would really enjoy it temporarily.
Thanks so much Cat for posting this!!!
Judy-your birds are beautiful. Congrats to you for giving them a good home.
Birds can be rescued – there are special rescues just like dogs. I do not know how expensive they are from rescues but they are really expensive to buy. The least I paid for an abused bird was $500.00. I was begged to take a scarlet macaw from a bird rescue at a pet fair last summer but I do not have any more room for cages – Sunday and Snow live in my kitchen and Buddy lives in the family room. Fortunetly we have large rooms for their 5 foot tall cages. They do not get along as I had planned so they all live alone. They are a lot of fun and Buddy can whistle the Andy Griffith theme song. They all can say hello, are you pretty, come here, I am a pretty bird and many more individual things. They also can squak and scream and make a mess throwing seeds. Bumper lays under Buddy’s cage and Buddy drops him food – that is really funny. All I know is that they will probably outlive me. I hope my kids like them!
They are wonderful! I have a soft spot for winged creatures as I grew up with a house full of canary song (My Mom raised them when she was still with us) in childhood. The large birds do live long lives, they all look to be in great condition. I know how much work was involved with the canaries, I imagine the parrots are lots too. Maybe they can learn to say WE LOVE BASSET HOUND TOWN! Thanks for sharing them with us!
