First baby Giraffe born to Cincinnati zoo in 26 years enters the world with a smile
Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and smiling baby giraffe lovers…..
Giving birth can be traumatic at the best of times.
But this new born giraffe appears to taking it all in its (rather long) stride.
Entering the world just before 10 am on 4-2-11, the unnamed and as yet un-sexed six foot baby took its first tentative steps as the Cincinnati Zoo’s latest star attraction.
Not to mention the star attraction of both of it’s parents!
The calf’s mother, 1,800 lb Tessa, became restless around 5 am Saturday morning and shortly thereafter volunteers noticed the calf’s hoof coming through and immediately contacted staff.
Four hours later Tessa delivered her calf and soon after began licking the vulnerable new born.
The calf took about 20 minutes before struggling to its feet.
Wow!
Just thought I would share….
More loving smiling babies later….Cat, Chaps and Emma
P.S. Here is a smiling baby Emma….
That giraffe picture startled me at first, no offense but this giraffe is a little scary looking.
However, Our Emma is as ever picture perfect.
How precious! I think it’s very, very cute. I just love giraffe’s. And that picture of the whole family should be framed. That is so cool.
I agree Cindy – That family photo is one of the best I have ever seen. PERFECT!
PS. The storm is about an hour away……
Hey girl. You gotta love that big baby. You need to think of a name and submit it. They are probably waiting to see if it is a boy or a girl before they have the naming contest.
Was reading more on the giraffe’s. Get this from the Dayton Daily News in OH:
“Tessa, who weighs about 1,800 pounds, came to the Cincinnati Zoo in 2008 from the Houston Zoo for the opening of Giraffe Ridge. The father, “Kimbaumbau” (Kimba) also came to Cincinnati in 2008, from the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence, Rhode Island.”
So, the female is from Houston! How cool!
Cindy – that is really cool! My Mom and I are planning on visiting the baby this spring. Cincinnati has a nice place for the giraffes. Maybe MaMa will do the TX 4 step for us!
I hope they let you take pics Cat. Can’t wait for the post!
Regas was talking about the baby this morning on his show. I guess this is pretty TALL news! hehehe
I was disappointed that they didn’t talk about it on the national news. Our local news was talking about an orangutan baby that was born recently in Houston. Whoopeee!
