Do you brush your basset’s teeth?
Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and brushing teeth lovers….I was wondering howl many of the residents brush their hound’s tooth…get it? Houndstooth!
Anyway….
I want to start incorporating dental hygiene into Daisy Lynn’s daily routine. I have to admit I never brushed Chaps or Emma’s teeth. As far as that goes, I never brushed any of my hound’s teeth. I always had good intentions but never followed through. It is quite the arduous task.
So, I found a package of new tooth brushes that I had for Julian when he was a toddler.
It is super soft.
I thought I would practice with just warm water and I don’t know what to use yet. That is why I am asking the residents….
Daisy Lynn has pure white stunningly bright pretty teeth and I want to keep them that way.
It got a bit ruff towards the end with the death grip on the brush….
It all took less than a minute and if I can’t find a minute a day to brush her teeth there is something wrong with me. I must make it a priority!
Wow, that really make a puppy tired.

Altho I know I should, I have never brushed my hounds teeth. The only time I tried to brush Jethro’s teeth, I almost lost a finger. I think doggie tooth brushing is better taught at a young age. Unless you have a real mellow hound, it’s difficult to start in their older years. So, we just get our teeth cleaned at the vet every other year or so. But, Daisy Lynn is at the perfect age to start trying to brush her teeth. I know you can get doggie toothpaste at any pet supply store. Even Wal-Mart carries it sometimes.
And by the way, yes, Daisy is very long. Rugby was my long boy. My groomer called him the Semi.
No I don’t brush Ollie’s teeth. I like my fingers to much.LOL!! I rely on his kibble & bone treats to do the job. I have never brushed any of my dogs teeth. Yes! Daisy is really long! I love how she stretches out when she lays on her belly. Ollie is long too & lays the same way.
I just brushed Cookie and Tater Tot’s teeth today. We use a product called Petrodex, it is safe for dogs because they can swallow it. They cannot swallow human toothpaste. I purchased a kit that had the toothbrush and toothpaste together. You can also just purchase the toothpaste. The dogs love it. Cookie was licking the toothpaste from Tater Tot’s lips. I order most of their supplies – treats, dog bones, toys, toothpaste, etc. through a website called http://www.kvsupply.com. If you order $50 in merchandise, shipping is free. Their prices are very reasonable, usually less than Petsmart.
I value my fingers too much and would not attempt to touch Bumpers teeth. His teeth and piggies are off limits – no touching! He is on an antibiotic once a month to keep the bacteria in his mouth down. Abby has dental chews and she seems to like those. My daughter brushes her aussie’s teeth with doggie toothpaste though. This is one of those things that need to be started as a pup!! Good you are starting Daisy now.
Speaking of Daisy’s length (she is long … so was our Maxine … we called her our “Super-sized” basset), have you taken any measurements of our new Mayor (puppy ear length to enter into the official archive of BHT and compare to her adult ear length)?
OneMom – absolutely fantastic idea. I will try to do that today. I bought Nell a date on the Sr. Hounds Abound Calendar today. She is darling…I need to put her on the blog.
I’ve always been afraid to brush any dogs teeth, and given that Slinky despises ear cleanings and nail clippings, I don’t even want to attempt brushing her teeth. The vet recommended brushing, but I just started putting some oral rinse for dogs in her water dish a couple of times a week, and I give her flossies and hard chews, that she enjoys, and are supposed to be good for her teeth.
I have seen toothbrushes for dogs and toothpase for dogs at PetSmart, but I have never tried them.
Yes, Maxine’s day was the 1st and Nell is today. Sophie is in March. You were so sweet to think of our special dogs.
What a good Mommy! This reminds me of the jingle from a favorite childhood commercial:

I have brushed all my dogs teeth until I got Pally & Gizzy. Their mouths are so small and they don’t like fooling with them. The Petrodex stuff is awesome. It comes in flavors too. My Joey loved the chicken flavor and would jump up when he saw the tube. Get a kit cuz it has the finger thingy and start out with that for a week or so to get the Mayor used to it then switch to the toothbrush that comes with the kit. It has a small and large brush on it. I use the water additive now but it’s not as effective as brushing.

I always brushed Charlie’s teeth–my sister is a vet and insisted how important it was for dogs to have good dental hygiene–it can actually even prolong their life by preventing possible unseen infections. It may sound silly and we didn’t have to worry about such things when pets only lived for a few years but now that they are living longer it is imperative to take care of their teeth (my sister even said that bacterial infections can start in the mouth via bad teeth, and the infection can pass into the bloodstream and cause serious damage to organs such as the heart and kidneys, even causing death!)!
I bought a specialty chicken flavored toothpaste from the vet and Charlie loved it! Sometimes i would even give her a piece of toothpaste as a treat! Or if Daisy doesn’t like the taste just be sure to reward her with a small treat afterwards and she will come to associate tooth-brushing with a reward!
Good luck–if you keep Daisy’s teeth in good health it will also ensure that you save money down the line when she is older as you won’t have to worry about getting any teeth pulled!
And take heart– though charlie has passed, I still brush the teeth of her three feline companions–it is a death-defying exercise in terror every time!
Thank you Sandra – So far I have been keeping up with the brushing. All of what you said makes so much sense. I am lucky so far. It seems she is agreeable to it! Her teeth are blinding white right now. Really, really pretty….
