The cost of basset hound back surgery
Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and wanting to know the cost of basset hound back surgery lovers! Well, not quite lovers, but you know what I mean.
I am now blogging about the cost of Emma’s back surgery. I had kind of put it off because it is not the most fun posting to do but I want this information to be available to people who need it. I have an entire sub blog devoted to what to expect when your basset hound or any dog for that matter needs back surgery and you choose go forward. The bill is a huge issue to consider. So far I have spent 3,518.00 dollars. Here is a copy of the big bill:

The remaining 58 dollars was for Emma’s first physical therapy session. She will have about 3 more of these sessions and then it is on to water therapy.
This morning as I was walking Emma down the princess promenade I was just beaming from ear to ear. Emma was walking at about 85%. I could just tell she had an extra special bounce in her step.
This ordeal has been trying, expensive, depressing, uplifting, and down right back breaking for Grandma and myself but that walk we took this morning made it all worth it. It was like she was saying to me, “I knew Mommy could fix me”.
I had an emergency fund for the kids medical needs. That money was the best money I ever saved.
More feeling glad later………Love, Cat, Chaps and little Miss new back Emmers later!
Look at me standing so good!
P.S. Wednesday is week three of the eight week recovery.
Ya know, $3500 sounds like a lot of money but when you look at the detailed bill it all becomes clear. I think you got a fair price. I mean, surgery of any kind is going to be expensive. So glad to hear Emma is progressing so well!!! I’m sure y’all are anxious for her to get better. Sounds like things may start getting easier for you and Grandma. You are so lucky to have a mother that loves your bassets as much as you do. GOOD GIRL EMMA! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
Hey Cindy –
I know what you are saying. Surgery is very expensive. Emma is sure glad that I had the doe for it. I had to put Chaps dental on the back burner for a few months but he is totally fine with it! LOL!
I really want others to see what that total included. It was a lot! Also, her progress is fantastic!
Cat
Cat…any price we have to pay is worth every $$ for the well-being of our dearly loved hounds! God willing and the creek doesn’t raise that I never have go through what you Emma and Grandma had to endure!! If so I am moving to KY!!!
When Sadie was having back troubles and the vet said that if she needed survery down the road we are talking at least $7000. Everything is double here in sunny California. Glad you had that golden egg tuck away!!
Emma is amazing all of us on her recovery…nothing is going to stop our gal!! XOXO
Dear BJ! ROFLMBO! You are welcome in KY anytime! Wow, thanks for that update. 7,000 dollars in CA is a huge price. I hope other folks chime in with costs in their areas. It is important to let others know this.
Everyone that is reading this, Sadie was Emma’s niece. She passed away from an autoimmune disorder that crushed her family emotionally. She was only short of 15 months old when her family helped her to the bridge. You can read all about Sadie and see many pictures here:

Thank you BJ for helping others learn.

Cat,
My heart goes out to you. I know full well how expensive it is running a household of hounds. Lets hope good times come your way very soon.
Very best wishes,
Jon & the woofs
Jon – Thank you for your comments. Do you have any idea what a surgery like Emma’s would cost in Sweden? It would be very interesting to hear. Give your Woofs a kiss from basset hound town!

Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma

Cathy,
I still think you should allow us to contribute/help with this bill. After all you do for Bassets, why not ask for a little help for yourself and the hounds?
After all it was for “Our Emma”
P.S. I have spent more money on Slinky than I ever spent on any man I was involved with. What does that say about my life!
Hey dear Maureen and Slinky – Love your P.S.! It says you are loving your life!
Regarding my bills – I am just fine, thank God. I am very blessed.

I will I was actually relieved to see your bill scared it would be much more ….. This is managable for us…… Emma is a lucky girl…..
Kelly – that is wonderful news. The recovery is a bit hard but so worth it. Emma is doing great. Hey, I have a sling I am getting ready to post that you have to get. It is a wonderful product. I ordered the large for Emma. I am putting the link right here.

It is nice, because you stand up and use it due to its really long handles. Even after Emma is up for good I am going to use it on ramps and steps.
See what you think.

Kelly – so you don’t get confused, it is SLF-02
L – 31 to 90 pounds. This one has the fleece lining.

Thankyou Thankyou your support is so appreciated I will look into the sling…… Every little bit of help I get is awsome…..LUV to you Emma …. Write Thursday night…..
You are very lucky. Our wonderful bassett Daisy was just over 6 years old. They could do the operation, but cost at least $10,000. We just couldn’t afford it. They refused to negotiate the price. We had to put her down. Heartbreaking. They told us we were “doing the right thing”, as if we had a choice. Doing the right thing? Pay the money or let her die? What kind of choice is that? We live in New York, and had no idea it would be such expensive surgery. She is buried in our backyard and I cry everytime I look out my window and see her grave. She was too young to die.
Hi Mary – Oh, that is awful about the cost of back surgery in NY. 10K, that is just outrageous. I agree, she was too young to die. I am so sick and tired of greedy vets. There is no way that surgery would vary that greatly from state to state. I am dealing with greedy vets right now with Emma and her liver disease. They are circling her like vultures ready to pick apart my check book. Sick bastards. I think the specialty vet practice that she was going to should be sued for mal practice. Preying on the sorrow and grief of innocent families that love their family members.
Again, I am sorry for your loss and I am so glad you left a comment. Daisy was lucky to have your family.
