I was just wondering?????????

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and just wondering how many basset hounds in basset hound rescues in the USA need forever homes lovers:

I think I might go to my rescue links page and do a very rough count. It is totally out of curiosity. I also thought it wound be nice to know. Of course this would not count how many are not in rescue and in shelters. I could probably do that count as well, but I just don’t have the stomach for that one.

They would, for the most part be on pet finder.

If you had to guess, how may bassets do you think are in basset hound rescues in the USA that need homes? Without counting or going to the rescue sites for a rough estimate, I am going to guess 410. That seems really low when I fester on it, but I am going to stick with it.

I will give my best estimate very soon after I do a rough count. Not tonight, but very soon. Feel free to leave a guess as well and we can see who comes close. I wanted to feature a hound that needs a home so I was diplomatic and googled basset hounds that need rescue.

Guardian Angel Basset Hound Rescue came up first and the first hound on their site was:

SAMMIE! So, Sammie is going to be our inspiration for guessing. You can imagine my glee when I read this!

Look at this beautiful little girl! She is around 8 years old and is very quiet and easy going.
She is house broken and loves to get her beauty sleep at night and during the day.

Sammy will let you know when she has to go out but other than that you wont even know
she is around. We have had her for a couple of weeks and have not gotten her on the
site because we were getting use to her. She is BLIND!!

sammy1h

We have never had a foster who was blind but are totally amazed at how she is handling herself. We have other bassets and 2 other dogs who have accepted her . She is just one of the bunch.

I am very thrilled and touched that the beginning of my research turned up this elderly, blind girl.

So, like I said, I was just wondering???????????

How many basset hounds do you think are in USA rescues?

More wondering later………Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma

Well, given that there are more than 60 basset rescues coast to coast (judging by the Daily Drool listings — some are gone, but I suspect the count is not wildly off), I’d hazard that the number is closer to 1400 or more, or 25 per rescue at a MINIMUM (BROOD has considerably more in their care than the 28 “available” shown on their website). Petfinder lists 2,288 bassets total. That would be depressing unless you look at the breeds with the highest counts: black labs, beagles, border collies, boxers, labs, chihuahuas, and pit bulls. Some are over 10,000. Sigh.

OMG! Thanks Susan for this. I was so off! I thought there was about 40 rescues. I really love to know how many! I really want to showcase this. How sad was I? I really want to get the number.

I do lay in bed wondering this question. How many basset hounds are in basset hound rescue?

  4. May 31st, 2009 | 10:12 pm

In some of the rescues on my blog roll:

    Georgia –
Bassets Rescued since 1992: 2,360 Bassets Rescued in 2009: 63

    Carolina Basset Rescue –
currently 55 bassets needing homes (in foster) and another 10 owner listed hounds needing homes.

    Ohio Basset Rescue –
41 bassets currently in need of homes (some in need of foster homes!) and another 5 owner relinquish.

    Basset Buddies in Texas –
    rescued 319 bassets since March 2007. Currently has 38 needing homes;

That’s more than 200 bassets just in four rescues right now.

I think my rescue list is pretty close to all of the rescues. I ask occasionally for people to check to see if their rescue is on my list.

I know some of them are pretty small and some are huge, like GABR.

It really is mind blowing. I was working on Doris, the KY Sr. over the weekend and the gal I was talking to asked me if I only did basset hounds. I told her yes because it is all I have time for.

KY has Bluegrass but that is basically one person and a few foster homes in Western KY.

I try to cover northern KY, but I am not even a rescue (501c3). Bluegrass has no money to give me when I do pull.

There has to be people in KY that love basset hounds and want to help. We need large scale planners and events like the other big rescues.

    That would be so cool!

Come on KY! We can do it!

I am so shocked by these numbers, I can’t imagine that the figures are so high. I am glad I rescued a hound, and I encouraged anyone who is thinking of getting a dog to contact a rescue first. Not only are you helping a hound, you get more insight into the dog’s behavior.

Wow! These numbers are scary! I’ll admit our basset came from a puppy mill shortly after we lost one of our other dogs and it wasn’t planned. I know…we were bad and what we did perpetuates the problem. But, we also have rescued three of our other 4 pets and did this before we became more aware.

We’re hound dog lovers and looking into fostering now. I’ll report back on our progress…and recovery!

Peter – One of my hounds came from a puppy mill. It was Chloe. When we know better we do better.

I am thrilled to find out that your family is looking into fostering. I am smiling ear to ear right now!

We cannot wait to hear reports back from you! This is so cool!

I love Twitter and how I met you.

I also want to thank you for helping me with my website. Your business very hip!
