I furminated the Mayor’s rear end yesterday!

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Furminator Lovers: Do you furminate your basset hounds? I bought a furminator about a year ago and it does work really well. Chaps has a fair amount of smaller cysts on his bod so I use it very gently, but I still get a goodly amount of dead hair off of him. This pile was about 10 passes per cheek.

He got bored with it before he hightailed it out the dog door. You are viewing the area I was working on. He gets a bit fluffy back there.

Emma is a huge reason we do, what my Mom calls, de-hairing, (mopping, vacuuming, shaking, washing, bathing, and furminating), so often. Emma is allergic to dander. She got a good whiff before I could whisk the culprit away.

Emma’s turn is next.

Hey, have you ever seen this YouTube of Frank the Tank and Sweet Sarah getting Furminated? I have seen it several times, but it is always worth watching again. That Frank is just a character.

Hang on Emma, your are next!

More Furminating Later……Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma

I bought one of those furminators too. Took me a while to get the guts to pay $50 for the thing but they do work. Mine could use it daily! But I’m not that good of a Mom and only do them when I bathe them or a few times a month.

Cindy – I know they are so expensive. My Mom told me yesterday, “You should do this everyday”. I replied that if I did everything I should everyday in the up keep of hounds I would never get to work. I need to do a blog on that. Just get up and do everything I should do everyday and see how long it takes. That would be fun!

WOW…sounds interesting and looks like it works!! So got me searching the internet and I see they have all sizes and prices (OUCH)!!! Even saw them on E-bay and they look the same but much cheaper….my question is what is the best size for our hounds.!!!
Looks like the investment would be well worth it and cut down on the cost of vacumn bags!!!
    Happy de-hairing!!!

BJ – I know, the darn things are so expensive but I do agree that they are worth it. I bought the larger sized one. If it were just Emma, I would not need a furminator. I use it on her but her coat is short with no undercoat. Chaps had a huge undercoat full of fluff. It is terrific for removing that soft under coat and it does not hurt at all.

Let me know what you decide and send me a picture! Let’s de-hair the world! hehe

BJ- Both Cat and I have the yellow one. There’s one smaller and one bigger but the middle size seems to be good for the bassets.

Cat – I agree! There’s no way I’d ever get anything done if I tried to brush 4 hounds every day and keep up with wiping down drool from everywhere all the time. I just take a week out of the year or every few years and wipe down woodwork and touch up paint the house. And about once a month or so everybody gets bathed and brushed. Well, sometimes every other month. Ha! Oh, and we wash doggie beds and vacuum and mop weekly. Hey, if someone has a problem with the way my house looks, they can go back out the door they came in!

Thanks Cat and Cindy for the advise….and I too agree that to do what we should do for our hounds (and I too have four) on a daily basis would be a full time job just in it self!! I have to go to work to paid for their big dog house…they are kind enough to let us stay here with them…haha!!
I will update you are my de-hairing1!!

I love our furminator. Sir Henri has such a thick bassie coat, and Miss Riley seems to shed non-stop. I think the furminator is worth the cost.

Oh the indignities the Mayor suffers with to maintain his good looks!!!

Cat – you will do anything to feature a basset backside on the blog, won’t you?

    😉

Who, me? I don’t know what you are talking about Kerry!

There is just something so cute! Every time a hound passes me by I have to pat that area!

Another thing about the furminatior, is you can do it without creating a huge cloud of flying hair. I sat on the floor in my office and combed the mayor until the teeth were full. Then I gently took the hair and just placed it on that piece of paper. It seems really clean.

Let me throw this out there. Every time I am at my vets office he takes out a cheap flea comb and drags it down the kids backs. I noticed that it brings out a smaller portion of the under coat that the furminator does. It cost about 50 cents. So I bought one. I was using it on Chaps just to see. I was somewhat impressed. It would have taken about 10 times as long to accomplish what the furminator does but, for those of you who cannot afford one, give the 50 cent flea comb a try.

i use a “zoom groom” its a rubber brushie thing that i got at pet smart…kind of massages and grushes at the same time..its softer than the furminator so there is usually less dog resistance.

i bring it to the park and brush buster while we hang out…it puts him to sleep while i do it…he just sits there and then eventually tips over! it gets tons of fur off of him! same with coop….whose coat is more of the longer setter variety.

i have a mars coat king which is more like a furminator to use with coop…it works well but i find that many dogs don’t like it because it is harsh…the zoom groom is softer so you can do more…plus you can use it in the tub too.

the coat kin i think is more for longer coats than the furminator…but it works well with coop’s coat.

anyway both seem to love the zoom groom which i got at petsmart for i think like $12 or something. it does take of a decent amount of coat.

Lois – thank you for the info about the zoom groom. My Nell (sussex spaniel) has such trouble with her skin, that I have worried about trying the furminator (especially considering the cost). I just checked some reviews comparing the two and it seems that many people are very pleased with the zoom groom (and very affordable too!). It does look like something that would help control Nell’s fur, while not irritating her skin. I’m going to give it a try.
