This just in – Basset needs help!
Howllo Fellow Hound and Rescue Lovers: I got a call today from the animal control officer who is a delight. She said that she got a call about this guy. I will e-mail this blog to OHBR as well. Anyone in the area who wants a new friend here he is. Unfortunately, he does not like other dogs. Wow, we are running into a lot of these types lately????? Sup with that????
Here is the message that was sent out by the shelter holding him.

Hi Rescue Friends,
Attached is a pic of a 2 year old, M, neutered basset. The dog loves people and is dog aggressive. He is a smaller basset. If interested in pulling, contact us asap.

We get all of these dog aggressive dogs because people still buy from pet stores which only sell puppymill dogs. Puppymill puppies do not stay with their littermates long enough to learn proper puppy behavior and socialization. *sigh*
So there you have it folks. Susan of Bluegrass Basset hound Rescue just answered our question. I never even put 2 and 2 together. Susan is the grandest basset hound rescue person I have ever known. I love you Susan. Thanks for educatings us!
It’s so sad. They leave their mama at 5-6 weeks old, but it’s between weeks 9-12 that they learn that nipping hurts and things like that. A mother dog will actually put her puppy’s head in her mouth and gently clamp down until he stops biting her. Littermates yelp loudly when bitten and the offender learns that’s not appropriate. If YOUR puppy nips at you, yelling OUCH! loudly is similar–and it can teach yours not to bite/nip. There’s no reason a basset, for as sweet as they are, should be aggressive.
Of course, some people can’t distinguish between aggression and Alpha status behavior. I’ve had people think my grand dame Nellie is getting ready to start a huge fight when in fact she’s just warning another to get out of her face. She has never started a fight in her 13 years and I would never consider her aggressive in the slightest. She’s just in charge. And loud about it 😉
Susan. I am honered that you teach us these important lessons. You are not only a teacher in life but a teacher in cyberspace. I love you Susan. I am honered to gain your knowledge! Thank you!
Any word from Ohio BR?
So many of these dogs just need some basic obedience, love & attention and these aggression problems can be solved. Oh how I wish they came with instruction manuals & warning lables. It might cut down on all the work the rescues have to do.
Nope, no word yet from Ohio. I am going to e-mail them again tonight. I so agree with you Chris. I also think that some dogs get labeled by someone who has mislabeled them to begin with and it sticks.
This guy needs a friend.
Cat
Susan and Cat, you are so fantastic with the work you do to help these hounds. Thankyou so much. You both must have the silkiest of wings.
Hugs,
Kip and Gus
Good luck to that very handsome boy. Furever home on its way!!!!!!!!
I am going to call on this guy today. 1-8-08. OBHR is not pulling him because he has be labled aggressive.
I will updated my blog with hopefully more information later.
Poor guy.
Well, I called today and I was informed that this guy was picked up last night by a rescue? 1-7-08. No one knows what rescue picked him up but it might have been an all breed because OBHR said they were “not” pulling him.
Well, it looks like someone gave this guy the chance he deserves. I hope I find out who pulled him.
I will let you know if I do.
More Later…Cat, Chaps and Emma
