Mamma thinks Emma is the smartest girl in the world!
Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and placating Mama into believing that Emma is the smartest girl in the world lovers!
OK, here is what our girl did a few days ago. It left Grandma and I with our mouths open! We just could not believe it! Tell us what you think. Here goes…..
I was getting ready to babysit my sister’s dogs a few days ago, Enzo and Romeo! So I was fixing up their areas. I make sure everyone has their own areas for eating and sleeping. Enzos is in the bathroom and Romeo’s place is in the sun room. So, I was bringing up Enzo’s baby gate. As I entered the living room with the gate it frightened Chaps. It makes clanking sounds. I stopped and let them smell it. I told Chaps and Emma that Enzo and Romeo were coming to visit. They knew exactly what was going on. We watch Enzo and Romeo often.
So I hooked up the baby gate to the bathroom and came back out to the dining room. I noticed that Emma was heading towards the toy pile. I thought it was somewhat odd because she is not a huge toy fan like Chaps is. I really did not think much about it. But then, as I was watching her I was dumbfounded. She sorted through all of the toys and found the one toy she had stolen from Enzo the last time we were baby sitting. The orange carrot! It took her only moments. She picked that toy out of about 30 toys and took it to her bed. This is her in what we call her comfort corner!
I was shocked! I told Grandma what was going on. We could not believe it! It was like she was saying, “This is still my toy, don’t give it back to Enzo.”
Emma is so smart. It really makes one wonder howl much we miss in these tiny little slices of life. Our hounds show us every day howl smart they are. We just must look. That was Emma telling me what was important to her. I still cannot get over it! Thank goodness I keep that carrot in her comfort corner. It is a victory for her. There is NOWAY Enzo is getting that carrot back!
More being so proud of our girl later. Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma
Of course she knows exactly what’s going on. Putting up those baby gates in certain spots then Enzo and Romeo showing up in the past is part of a routine that she’s learned to recognize. And Enzo’s smell is on that carrot so that’s how she was able to pick it out. Of course she knows!!!
Some examples of our routine and what the dogs know…
Every nite around 9:00 they are put in a certain room of the house where their beds are to go to sleep. Around 7:30 to 8:30 everyhoundie, one by one, mosies in their room and picks a bed and goes to sleep. Most of the time Ronald only has to coax one dog to get to bed. Of course that would be Jethro.
Monday through Friday mornings you don’t hear a peep from them because they know that we are going to work and they will be staying in their room (which has a doggie door to outside) until we get home that evening. So we can turn on the TV and walk around the house and they stay in their room and don’t say a thing. But, on weekends they start crying about 5:00AM to come inside because they know it’s the weekend and they will get to come in. Makes me wonder if they can count to 5!
Around 3:30 or when I get home everyhoundie starts crying and gesturing that it’s time to eat. Even on weekends they know when it’s time. Sometimes Rugs will start telling me it’s time around 2:00 and I tell him “it’s not time yet”. He seems to understand and tries again later.
On the weekends after I get through with eating my breakfast they all know it’s morning treat time. After I drink the last of my milk and put the glass down everyhoundie starts crying for a biscuit.
So, yes, they know. And it’s got everything to do with routine. Dogs LOVE routine.
Who else has a routine and their dogs boss them around on what to do next?
We know exactly what you are talking about routine – at 4:00 everyday Bumper and Abby go to the front door and wait for their daddy to come home. At about 8:00 each night they need to go out and cry until you take them. At about 9:40 Bumper goes over to Rick in his recliner and starts barking until Rick gets up and puts Bumpers blanket on the chair. Rick has to move to the couch because it is Bumpers bedtime. He jumps up in the chair and we cover him up. When we go to bed at night Abby goes to “her” room with her full size bed. Rick pulls the covers back and she positions herself with her head on the pillow and he covers her up. If it is really cold he turns the heated mattress pad on. My hounds are not spoiled – ARE THEY???
Cat it must be babysitting weekend because I have Pugsley – yes he is a pug – at our house this weekend. It has been good so far as Bumper has not yet bit his head off. Maybe he is mellowing as he gets older – my boy will turn 8 this week.
Judy – that is so cute! I just drove past your home and honked the horn. Hope you and the pug guest are staying warm! If not, turn on the heated mattress pad! hehehehe
Cat
Judy – OMG – when I was growing up we had a pug named Pugsly!! LOL Bailey goes to doggie daycare and the ladies there tell me that Bailey stops playing everyday about 5 minutes before I pull into the parking lot to pick him up. He also pacing back and forth every night at the same time until we go to bed. I think that anyone who has a hound has a dog that runs the house.
Cat, our Emma constantly surprises me with the things that she can do. Give the kids an extra valentine kiss from me and Bailey.
