Emma seems so depressed…

May 6th, 2008 - 7:07 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and loving Emma Lovers:

Our Emma seems so depressed as of late. I talked to my vets about it and they said that dogs can become depressed just like humans. Our Emma is very lethargic. I try my best to keep the mood upbeat! I feel I do a pretty good job. I just know that Emma hates being blind. I am getting worried about her. Do you think that a dog going blind could drive them crazy? Emma has only just turned 4. Please just put yourself in Emma’s place. She went blind at 3 years old. She was the life of the party. Guarding the window, making sure I knew everything she saw.

I get a fair amount of folks telling me she will be OK, and their hound went blind, but they were Seniors. I am just aching for her. She is so sad. We had a hard day today. The birds she so loved to watch are singing and the the flower planting is going on. She laid on the couch with her back turned to me.

I am crushed. Just crushed for her. I know there is nothing I can do, and thank God she is with me. She does not understand what happened. She is still a young vibrant hound.

Cat, I am so sorry to hear about Emma. I tried to hold my hands over my sweet Summer’s eyes and the result was revolt. I cannot imagine what Emma is going through. I am just so sad for her.

Thank you for posting this. I know I for one care very much about Emma.

Emma, I was one that told you that you would be OK. Now I am getting a new look on this. You are a yound hound and I really understand depression. I have a Sr. Blind hound and I am a Sr. I struggle with depression as well. Let me tell you something. You just made me get off the couch and tell you, you can make it. In a strange way, you just helped me. Emma. thank you

Dear Wilson, You just made us cry. I just went to Emma and whispered your message into her ear. I just have to tell everyone, that this is so hard. Emma is so sad. Her breeders knew of her disability when they sold her to me. Beware of, “reputable breeders”! They really can do a pawn job on you!!!!

I spent thousands of dollars thinking I was was going to get a healthy hound. The breeder I went to picked the hound for me. They actually wanted me to drive from KY to TX twice. Once to get Chaps and once to get a puppy. It was so odd. Trust your gut! The breeder knew that the pup they had picked out for me had bilateral abnormal drainage eye angles and still let me drive from KY to TX to get her. I did massive research and still got scammed. Poor Emma.

((((((Emma))))) Cat, are you trying to keep her busy so she won’t have as much time to be sad? Maybe a kong or a hoof to give her something to do? Maybe some obedience training? I think if she were busy she might feel a little better. Love and hugs!

  7. May 6th, 2008 | 9:24 pm

Yes, I try everything. She is allergic to plastic so Kongs are out. She is allergic to hoofs, pig ears and everything. My Mom and I walk her and play with her every day. We bring in friends which she loves. I love your suggestions. I am trying so hard. I can just tell she is so sad. She hates being blind. Can you blame her?

I am dead set to get her happy again. It is my misson in life!

    Thanks Melynda!

My goodness, Emma is not only blind from a congenital defect but she is highly allergic to everything including food. Her food is triple the cost of regular food. She also can have no treats.

My vet told me that these hounds were genetically weak

Hi, Cat and Emma–Emma, you are ever in my thoughts, and always in my daily prayers, and special intentions, to St. Francis. I know in my heart that gentle Francis is watching over you, sweetness. I love you, Emma!

Lots of hugs and drool to all of you. I can only imagine the sorrow this brings.

I have no doubts you will all get through this, but I pray it is sooner rather than “not so sooner”.

I don’t know Emma as well as a lot of others do, but does she like things like car rides where her ears can blow in the breeze? Or a walk by a lake where she can wade in water? Mine are foolish enough even to listen to me sing!

Or maybe you can find something new that Emma hasn’t done before. That way, perhaps, she wouldn’t have any pre-blindness memories to associate with it.

Lots of hugs & kisses to all of you from all of us.

    Chris

Oh, Cat these are the blogs I do not like to read! My heart just aches for Emma, YOU and your family. Is there anything Special that Emma liked that she could still enjoy without seeing it? I just wish there was something we could do, or send her that would help. Colby Chaps likes his IONIC Brush that vibrates when you brush him. It’s like giving him a massage. Do you think Emma would enjoy that? Please know we continue to pray for Emma and you everynight. She still has the gift of hearing to hear her sweet Mama’s voice and she feels your touch and receives your love everyday! She will prevail! We love you~ Audra

    Hi Cat,
I thought I’d pop by just to see how your sweet Emma is doing, and I’m sad to hear that she’s been so depressed. My heart breaks for you both because I can only imagine how difficult this is. Just know that you always have a never-ending supply of luv and drool coming from us.

  16. May 8th, 2008 | 6:46 pm

Dear Mary and Scully! Thank you so much. It is sooooooooo hard. Emma hates being blind. She is too young to be blind. I will make sure she has the best life ever! I know you will help me do that! Kiss the monster for me! Slurp!
